Know Your Enemy: The Riot Tactics of Swedish Police

Introduction.

The basic function of police in capitalist societies is to maintain private property and to quell social unrest. Throughout different societies and points of history the ways in which this has been done has varied greatly. This text examines how Swedish police use a variety of means during demonstrations, riots and other mass struggles.

For almost four years, Amazon employees have been fighting for the recognition of their demands against the company’s management. It is no longer just a matter of a few more euros of wages which would secure a collective agreement; here we have an ill-working environment, and humiliating control and the disrespect of the employees by the management.

During the protests against the G20 summit in Hamburg the mainstream media and German politicians have painted a picture of activists and political protesters as enemies of the so-called progressive democracy.

In the aftermath of the protests especially the social centre Rote Flora has been used as a public scapegoat. This narrative has effectively legitimised police brutality and repression towards left radical activists, alternative projects and self-organised, autonomous structures.

Together with activists from all over the world we have already experienced great amounts of brutality and repression during the protests from more than 20000 disproportionately armed police officers. Both activists and the camps ruled legal by the highest constitutional court have been attacked, and also medics, legal teams and journalists have experienced the German police state in action. But the repression in Hamburg is not over yet.

On the 30th of September the Nordic Resistance Movement (NRM) will try to march through Gothenburg. Their march is staged at the same time as the biggest book fair in the Nordic countries, attracting about 100 000 participants. This is a call for Nordic participation in the antifascist protests and to a radical left book fair during the weekend.

Channel Zero is a newly formed podcast network of several anarchist and anti-authoritarian podcasts across so-called North America. Our goal is to create an ever growing platform to expand the reach of anarchist analysis into a larger and more public audience. Currently, we are made of up the Final Straw, the Crimethinc Ex-Worker Podcast, SubMedia, the Solecast, Which Side Podcast, Resonance: an Anarchist Audio Distro and the IGDCAST. Our goals with this network are several fold. First, we aim to support each other and expand the audience of all of our podcasts with a common website and platform where each of our shows can easily be found.

We want diverse queer communities that actively challenge the boundaries that limit our life and the potential of our communities of resistance. We want communities where we act collectively to fight the oppression of one. Communities in which no room is given to racism or transphobia. We cannot demand rights for only a part of the lgbtiqa+ community and leave others without. There’s no equality until there’s equality for all.
