The artist formally known as Kaz entered the alternative comix scene in the late 1970s. He studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York, where he attended lectures by Art Spiegelman. Among his early work is the comic strip 'The Pests!', that appeared in the New York Rocker and East Village Eye. He had his breakthrough through Raw magazine in 1980. It would prove to be the arrival of a new genre. Kaz combined a mix of punk rock and classic themes into his own, very recognizable 'atomic' style. A very versatile artist, Kaz's work has been published in an impressive range of magazines (East Village Eye, Weirdo, Eclipse and of course Raw). He has also contributed to more mainstream publications like The New Yorker, Nickelodeon Magazine, Eclipse and The Village Voice.
Much of Kaz's work for Raw was collected by Fantagraphics in the anthology collection 'Buzzbomb'. In 1991, he began his syndicated comic strip 'Underworld', that has appeared in various alternative weeklies. Besides 'Underworld' collections, Fantagraphics has also published 'Sidetrack City and other Tales' in 1996. In addition, he contributed to Spiegelman's 'Little Lit' series, and has illustrated trading card sets. Since 2001 he has been involved in animation, working on shows like Stephen Hillenburg's 'SpongeBob Squarepants', Joe Murray's 'Camp Lazlo' and Henry Selick's 'The Corpse Bride'.
