Yemen (
i/ˈjɛmən/; Arabic: اليَمَن al-Yaman), officially known as the Republic of Yemen (الجمهورية اليمنية al-Jumhūrīyah al-Yamanīyah), is an Arab country in Western Asia, occupying the southwestern to the southern end of the Arabian Peninsula. Yemen is the second largest country in the peninsula, occupying 527,970 km2 (203,850 sq mi). The coastline stretches for about 2,000 km (1,200 mi). It is bordered by Saudi Arabia to the north, the Red Sea to the west, the Gulf of Aden and Arabian Sea to the south, and Oman to the east. Although Yemen's constitutionally stated capital is the city of Sana'a, the city has been under rebel control since February 2015. Because of this, Yemen's capital has been temporarily relocated to the port city of Aden, on the southern coast. Yemen's territory includes more than 200 islands; the largest of these is Socotra.
Yemen was the home of the Sabaeans (biblical Sheba), a trading state that flourished for over a thousand years and probably also included parts of modern-day Ethiopia and Eritrea. In 275 AD, the region came under the rule of the later Jewish influenced Himyarite Kingdom. Christianity arrived in the 4th century AD whereas Judaism and local paganism were already established. Islam spread quickly in the 7th century and Yemenite troops were crucial in the expansion of the early Islamic conquests. Administration of Yemen has long been notoriously difficult. Several dynasties emerged from the 9th to 16th century, the Rasulid being the strongest and most prosperous. The country was divided between the Ottoman and British empires in the early 20th century. The Zaydi Mutawakkilite Kingdom of Yemen was established after World War I in North Yemen before the creation of Yemen Arab Republic in 1962. South Yemen remained a British protectorate until 1967. The two Yemeni states united to form the modern republic of Yemen in 1990.

Radio
Radio is the use of radio waves is to carry information, such as sound, by systematically modulating some property of electromagnetic energy waves transmitted through space, such as their amplitude, frequency, phase, or pulse width. When radio waves strike an electrical conductor, the oscillating fields induce an alternating current in the conductor. The information in the waves can be extracted and transformed back into its original form.
Radio systems need a transmitter to modulate (change) some property of the energy produced to impress a signal on it, for example using amplitude modulation or angle modulation (which can be frequency modulation or phase modulation). Radio systems also need an antenna to convert electric currents into radio waves, and vice versa. An antenna can be used for both transmitting and receiving. The electrical resonance of tuned circuits in radios allow individual stations to be selected. The electromagnetic wave is intercepted by a tuned receiving antenna. A radio receiver receives its input from an antenna and converts it into a form usable for the consumer, such as sound, pictures, digital data, measurement values, navigational positions, etc. Radio frequencies occupy the range from a 3 kHz to 300 GHz, although commercially important uses of radio use only a small part of this spectrum.

Women are rarely to be seen in Yemen’s marketplaces and, when they are, they are hidden from male glances by a protective veil. Islam still plays an important role in the daily cultural life of the people, including the traditional market places that are almost exclusively a male domain. The Republic Of Yemen covers a large part of the southwest of the Arabian Peninsula and contains several fascinating historical sites. East of Sanaa on the ancient Frankincense route, is the town of Marib that was once the residence of the legendary Queen Of Saba and in the extreme north is the town of Sadah, a region known for its powerful tribes. In the centre of the Djebel Harraz is the picturesque mountain village of Manakhah. Due to its location it was once a strategic point on the ancient trading route between the sea and the highlands. The breathtaking architecture of its buildings still testifies to the former prosperity of a village that today is well known for its popular market. Al Hudaydah was once the most important Turkish harbour on the Red Sea. The city was a commercial rival of the British occupied city of Aden to the south which, during colonial times, was of great importance in securing a sea route to India. In addition to the recent modernisation of the harbour the fishing industry still plays an important role and the fertile coastal waters of the Red Sea still ensure a good catch. To the south of Al Hudaydah is the legendary old harbour of Al Mokha, the former centre of the country’s coffee trade from which the world renowned Mocha coffee derived its name. Despite their present poverty the people here are a proud race and the ancient name of the Yemen, Arabia Felix, or “Arabia The Content”, is still a thing of the present.

The Yemenis consider themselves the "original" Arabs from whom all the other Arabs are descended. Indeed according to ancient scriptures,Quran and some suggestive statements in the Talmud there is evidence of this.
In ancient Yemen, named by the ancient Romans "Arabia Felix" ;Happy Arabia, there were 6 principal kingdoms: the Sabaean, Awsanian, Minaean, Qatabanian, Hadhramawtian, Himyarite. Sabaean was the oldest and one of the most powerful. Saba in Hebrew is "Sheba". Thus the fabled Queen of Sheba came from Sabaean kingdom. Queens in Arabia were common, and both the Bible and Quran refer to the Queen of Sheba whose real name was Bilquis!
Sana'a, the capital, is one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world. Throughout in Yemen, Stone Age people left evidence of their occupation from 400,000BC (Discovered in Tahama on the Red sea of Yemen). Bronze Age people from 2000BC had developed many agricultural settlements throughout the area. Foremost of these was Marib where a huge dam was built to irrigate the terraced fields found here. The Marib Dam is considered the greatest technical structure of antiquity. You may see some of the ruins of this structure which collapsed around 600AD and which is nearby to a new dam serving the same purpose today.
Among Yemens natural and cultural attractions are four World Heritage sites:
1.The Old Walled City of Shibam in Wadi Hadhramaut, inscribed by UNESCO in 1982, is nicknamed "Manhattan of the Desert", because of its "skyscrapers". Surrounded by a fortified wall, the city is one of the oldest and examples of urban planning based on the principle of vertical construction.
2.The ancient city of Sana'a.
Even the name itself, Sana'a has a great history. It was previously known as the city of Shem, named after Shem the son of Noah,father of all semites, who was the first to order to build the city. It has also carried the name Azal after one of the sons of Yaqtin ibn Aa'z as mentioned in the Old Testament.
While the historical accuracy of such stories might be questioned, what is certain is that history in Yemen dates from the very dawn of humankind.
Sana'a an altitude of more than 7,000 feet has been inhabited for over two and a half millennia. Sanaa has 103 mosques, 14 hammams (traditional bath houses) and more than 6,000 houses that survive all date.
3.Close to the Red Sea Coast, the Historic Town of Zabid, was Yemens capital from the 13th to 15th Century. It played an important role for many centuries, because of its UNIVERSITY , which was a centre of learning for the whole Arab world. Arabic numbers were used there first on the peninsule and Algebra is said to have been invented there in the early 8th century by the little known scholar al-Jaladi.
4.The latest addition to Yemens list of World Heritage Sites is the Socotra Archipelago. Socotra or "Eipheba Sakhotora" which used to mean "The island of Happiness".Mentioned by Marco Polo in the 13th Century, Socotra islands and two rocky islets near the Gulf of Aden has rich biodiversity. 37% of Socotras 825 plants, 90% of its reptiles and 95% of its snails are unique and DO NOT OCCUR anywhere else in the world. It is home to 192 bird species, 253 species of coral, 730 species of costal fish and 300 species of crab and lobster, as well as a range of Aloes and the Dragons Blood Tree (Dracaena cinnabari) or as it's known in Yemen: The tree of Cain and Abel (The name of this tree has always been linked with the name of Socotra due to its fame and importance since ancient times.The island people make cracks on the trees trunk and then a viscous red fluid flows and is left till it is dried up. After that they collect it and pack it for export.It is further used as medicine and many legends have been woven around it. According to one legend the tree grew from the blood of Abel when the first human crime occurred. As the blood flowed, the tree sprang from it. )
Yemen today is still not well known by the west so there could be more of these peculiarities on this beautiful mysterious country.

Socotra Island off the coast of Yemen has been called the strangest place in the world.
This is true, but it's also one of the most interesting places in the world. Socotra is an isolated place of odd and beautiful plants and animals.
There are hundreds of flora and fauna that can only be found in this one place.
Socotra Island is home to the dragon's blood tree which weeps a red fluid.
There's also the corpulent desert rose, which grows a lovely pink flower.
These and other wonderfully bizarre forms of life bring people to these islands on a regular basis.
UNESCO has recognized Socotra Island as a natural world heritage site worthy of being preserved.

Presently it is a part of the Republic of Yemen and due to its harsh weather conditions every element on the island is distinctive in itself.
It is believed that the name of the island originated from Sanskrit which means “blissful island.”
It is often regarded as the “lost world” and houses some of the most unique flora and fauna found on this planet.
It is believed that the group of islands got separated from the African Mainland about 6 or 7 million years ago.
With more discoveries and exploration taking place, remarkable facts about this place has been revealed over the past couple of decades.
Interesting Facts About Socotra
It is compared to the Galapagos Islands as it features more than 800 rare species of flora and fauna. It is believed that 1/3rd of these are found nowhere on the planet.
The vegetation at the islands have adapted and evolved for suiting the hostile climate. Some of these plants have been there for over 20 million years.
Desert Rose and the Bottle Tree are some of the popular plants to see on the islands.
With over 140 different types of birds, the island is a treat for every bird lover. Around 10 of these birds can be seen nowhere on the planet.
Average temperature on the island stays around 25°C. Also, the island receives hardly any form of rainfall throughout the year.
It was a part of the Gondwana super continent and was detached during the Miocene.
Socotra’s population is about 60,000 and it was only two years ago when the 1st road on the island was built.
Declared as the UNESCO World Heritage Site the island is characterized by 3 different terrains, namely, Narrow Coastal Plains, Mountains, and the limestone plateau.
The animal family consists of no amphibians and only one native mammal i.e. Bat.
However, the island is dominated by reptiles which comprise about 90% animal population on the island. Skinks, legless lizards, chameleon are among the most found animals here.

Bañada por el Mar Rojo y el Mar Arábigo, la República del Yemen se alza como uno de los focos musicales más emblemáticos del mundo árabe. Cuna de Las mil y una noches y de la enigmática reina de Saba, los colores de su música se extienden por toda su geografía a través de los estilos más diversos. Una bella y cautivadora experiencia sonora guiada por Lamya, que refleja el afán de los músicos yemeníes por preservar las melodías tradicionales, como el hoy popular estilo homayni de Saná, seguir cultivando el milenario arte del oud, o aunar estos géneros con nuevos lenguajes como el rap o la música electrónica.
-Abdulbasset Al Harethi: Desde muy joven se interesó por el arte del oud y de forma autodidacta fue forjando su particular estilo de interpretación hasta constituir la primera banda de orquesta de música de Saná, la capital de Yemen. Para ella compuso diversos himnos nacionales, así como música folclórica. En su formación y trayectoria musical ha colaborado con artistas coreanos y egipcios.
-Sharaf Al Qaedi: Virtuoso del laúd oriental y dueño de una profunda voz, su repertorio musical se consolida como un trabajo que bebe de las influencias de las canciones yemeníes en particular y de las canciones árabes en general. Su talento y reconocimiento le han llevado a actuar en distintos escenarios europeos, como los de España, Londres o París, entre otros.
-Jameela Saad: La cálida e hipnótica voz de la joven artista acompaña al oud que ella misma interpreta desde que tenía diez años. Destacada figura de la canción yemení, su precoz carrera artística le ha llevado a configurar una extensa discografía en la que su música, cargada de sonidos y letras que transmiten emoción y sentimiento, ha conquistado las audiencias más exigentes tanto de jóvenes como de mayores.
-Fouad Ali Al Shargabi: Fundador y director de la Casa de la Música del Yemen, institución pública dedicada a preservar y documentar la canción yemení, el músico ha logrado recopilar desde que dirige este centro cerca de 40.000 canciones yemenitas de todos los tipos y épocas: desde las canciones surgidas a orillas del Mar Arábigo, las canciones pastorales de las montañas, hasta los cantos más tradicionales o clásicos.
-Hagag A.J. Masaed: Promotor del hip-hop yemení, el cantante ha creado un sonido diferente y único que se caracteriza por la particular mezcla del rap con instrumentos tradicionales como el mezmar, un tipo de flauta muy antigua. Maestro en fusionar la música folclórica árabe con los poemas que él mismo escribe y canta en inglés, el rapero ha recorrido el mundo con canciones que combaten la injusticia, el odio y el terrorismo.
-Abdulrahman Al Akhfash: Hijo de una familia de músicos, el joven artista empezó a cantar desde muy temprana edad. Su voz y sus melodías constituyen un puente entre muchas culturas, al tiempo que mantienen la identidad y las raíces musicales yemeníes. Con cerca de diez discos editados, su popularidad se extiende por todo Yemen, tanto por sus grabaciones tradicionales como las de sus propias composiciones.
-Shouruq: Nacida en la ciudad portuaria de Adén, la actriz y cantante recupera el patrimonio musical yemení para vestirlo con nuevos ritmos y sonidos electrónicos creando un novedoso color musical dentro de la escena contemporánea del país. Un lenguaje original con el que ha logrado aunar en perfecta armonía las raíces sonoras de su tierra con la tecnología musical electrónica.
- Naif Awath: Inició su carrera musical cantando en bodas y reuniones familiares en las que pronto obtuvo la admiración y el reconocimiento del público. Su interpretación del laúd yemení, su entonación vocal y sus pegadizas melodías, le han llevado a desarrollar un lenguaje propio y a ocupar un lugar destacado dentro de la fructífera generación de cantantes que ha generado Adén.
- Awadh Ahmed: Su vocación por la música surgió cuando tenía ocho años, edad en la que empezó a imitar a los grandes nombres de la canción del momento. Fruto de esa experiencia y de su aprendizaje, el artista empezó a poner voz a los versos de los poetas yemeníes, canciones que se extendieron por la radio y que lo dieron a conocer al público. Con un registro de voz único, su talento y maestría vocal los sitúan dentro de ese elenco de los gigantes de la música de la Península Arábiga.
