Unfollowing people on Twitter
Why would I want to unfollow someone?
- Typically, people unfollow other accounts when they no longer wish to see that account's Tweets in their home timeline. You can still view them on an as-needed basis by visiting their profile, unless their Tweets are protected.
- If you are unfollowing an account because their updates seem like spam, please read our guidelines on reporting spam on Twitter.
To unfollow from a Tweet
From the Twitter for iOS or Android app:
- Navigate to a Tweet from the account you’d like to unfollow.
- Tap the icon located at the top of the Tweet.
- Tap Unfollow from the selection menu.
From twitter.com:
- Find a Tweet from the account you’d like to unfollow.
- Hover your mouse over their name.
- Click the following button
To unfollow from your following list
From the Twitter for iOS app:
- In the top menu, tap your profile icon.
- Tap on Following at the top of your profile.
- Tap the following icon next to the account you’d like to unfollow.
- Tap Unfollow to confirm.
From the Twitter for Android app:
- In the top menu, you will either see a navigation menu icon or your profile icon. Tap whichever icon you have.
- Tap Profile.
- Tap on Following at the top of your profile.
- Tap the checked following icon next to the account you’d like to unfollow.
- Tap Yes to confirm.
From twitter.com:
- Click on Following on your homepage or profile page.
- Hover over the Following button next to any account name on your following list, it will change to Unfollow.
- Click the button to unfollow the account.
To unfollow from an account's profile page
From the Twitter for iOS or Android app:
- Go to the profile page of the account you'd like to unfollow.
- Tap the following icon
- You will see a message to confirm or cancel your request.
From twitter.com:
- Go to the profile page of the account you'd like to unfollow.
- Hover over the Following button on their profile page; it will change to Unfollow.
- Click the button to unfollow the account.
To unfollow via SMS/text message
- If you're using Twitter for SMS to follow others, you can choose to unfollow the account by texting UNFOLLOW username to your carrier's short code. (Example: UNFOLLOW support)
- If you don't want to unfollow the account completely, but only wish to stop receiving their updates via SMS, you can text LEAVE username or OFF username to the same short code. (Example: OFF support or LEAVE support)
