    Defiling Torah scrolls to torment and scare and demean has happened since the time the scrolls were first written and revered. This is an old violence and it hurts both because those that do it are emulating a past I still grieve and are rejecting a future I desperately seek.

    The Nessah Synagogue is a place of worship for the Persian Jewish community in Southern California and this desecration is beyond criminal. Our hearts and outrage are with the families who are dealing with this attack. 💔

    We must transcend the conflation of antisemitism and antizionism if we are to change the balance of power away from Israeli apartheid and toward Palestinian freedom. We must also ensure that our fight vs. white supremacist antisemitism remains central.

    Trump and his supporters are afraid of our movement. Trump doesn’t want to keep Jews safe – he wants to suppress free speech to ensure our silence and suppress Palestinian rights activism. Sign on to our petition against Trump's Executive Order:

    In response, it is imperative that Jewish communal leaders do all they can to clean up this mess. This includes saying unequivocally that Palestinian calls for campaigns for thier own freedom--including BDS-- are fair game, and not only as a matter of free speech

    We must look at how we got here. And honestly, the Jewish institutional community has played a deeply problematic role, including aligning with Trump and evangelical white Christians, and the “both sides” messengers out a misplaced sense of safety and self-interest.

    This EO is bad for Jews, no question, but the real impact of it will be felt by Palestinian students on campuses who will be silence and reprimanded for speaking up for thier freedom. This is unacceptable.

    This is what was behind the Muslim Ban and the executive order as well. All non-white Christians are lesser and “Other”—and we know where this leads. To marginalization, exclusion, and, ultimately to ethnic cleansing.

    I am concerned though, that through this EO, Trump is playing into the hands of white nationalists, an in effect promoting a brand of ethnonationalism that is premised on a hierarchy of nationalities.

    Because reality is, we are also targeted based on perceived shared ethnic characteristics. We want our civil rights agencies to protect against that, even though the statute does not spell it out.
