The fourth and final part of a series of videos examining World War 1. This extract opens with Germany's decision to launch a massive offensive at Verdun and what the result of this was including how soldiers needed to deal with the large number of deaths. It goes on to examine the state of the battlefields due to the effect of artillery shells and mud, and then looks briefly at soldiers who attempted to sustain minor wounds in order to be sent home. The more serious side of desertion is then examined in terms of people who disobeyed orders, people who suffered from shell-shock, and the court martial process. The final section looks at the French mutiny 1917 and the effect of the Russian Revolution before closign with the Armistice of November 11th 1918.

Desertion
In military terminology, desertion is the abandonment of a duty or post without permission (a pass, liberty or leave) and is done with the intention of not returning. In contrast, Unauthorized Absence (UA) or Absence Without Leave (US: AWOL; Commonwealth: AWL) refers to a temporary absence.
Desertion versus Absence Without Leave
In the United States Army, British Armed Forces, Australian Defence Force and Canadian Armed Forces, military personnel will become "AWOL" (/ˈeɪwɒl/; U.S. and Canada: Absence Without Leave) or "AWL" (U.K. and Australia: Absent Without Leave, AWL never AWOL) if absent from their post without a valid pass, liberty or leave. The United States Marine Corps, United States Navy, and United States Coast Guard generally refer to this as "Unauthorized Absence" or (UA). Personnel are dropped from their unit rolls after thirty days and then listed as deserters; however, as a matter of U.S. military law, desertion is not measured by time away from the unit, but rather:

Bowe Bergdahl
Robert Bowdrie "Bowe" Bergdahl (born March 28, 1986) is a United States Army soldier who was held captive by the Taliban-aligned Haqqani network in Afghanistan from June 2009 until his release in May 2014. The circumstances under which Bergdahl went missing and how he was captured by the Taliban have since become subjects of intense media scrutiny.
Bergdahl was released on May 31, 2014, as part of a prisoner exchange for five Taliban members who were being held at the detention center at Guantanamo Bay. This exchange and the ceremony announcing it, held in the White House Rose Garden, generated controversy in the United States. On December 14, 2015, the U.S. Army announced that Bergdahl would be tried by general court-martial on charges of desertion and misbehavior before the enemy.
Bergdahl and his case are the subject of season 2 of the podcast Serial.
Early life and education
Bergdahl was born in 1986, in Sun Valley, Idaho, to Robert Bergdahl, a commercial truck driver, and his wife Jani (Larson) Bergdahl. He is of Norwegian and Swedish ancestry. He has an older sister, Sky Albrecht Bergdahl. Both Bergdahl and his sister were home schooled by their mother in Hailey, Idaho. The family attended Sovereign Redeemer Presbyterian Church, an Orthodox Presbyterian Church. He received a GED certificate through the College of Southern Idaho. As an adult, Bergdahl studied and practiced fencing and martial arts before changing to ballet classes at the Sun Valley Ballet School in Ketchum, Idaho. He has never owned a car, and rode his bicycle everywhere. He spent time in a Buddhist monastery between 2007 and 2008.

First World War - Verdun, mud, desertion, mutiny, armistice
The fourth and final part of a series of videos examining World War 1. This extract opens with Germany's decision to launch a massive offensive at Verdun and what the result of this was including how soldiers needed to deal with the large number of deaths. It goes on to examine the state of the battlefields due to the effect of artillery shells and mud, and then looks briefly at soldiers who attempted to sustain minor wounds in order to be sent home. The more serious side of desertion is then examined in terms of people who disobeyed orders, people who suffered from shell-shock, and the court martial process. The final section looks at the French mutiny 1917 and the effect of the Russian Revolution before closign with the Armistice of November 11th 1918.

This extract opens with Germany's decision to launch a massive offensive at Verdun and what the result of this was including how soldiers needed to deal with the large number of deaths. It goes on to examine the state of the battlefields due to the effect of artillery shells and mud, and then looks briefly at soldiers who attempted to sustain minor wounds in order to be sent home. The more serious side of desertion is then examined in terms of people who disobeyed orders, people who suffered from shell-shock, and the court martial process. The final section looks at the French mutiny 1917 and the effect of the Russian Revolution before closign with the Armistice of November 11th 1918.

He was born at Heusden, in the Dutch Republic, studied at Leiden, and in 1611 became Protestant pastor of Vlijmen, whence in 1617 he returned to Heusden. In 1619, he played an influential part in the Synod of Dort, at which he was the youngest delegate. In 1634, Voetius was made professor of theology and Oriental science at the University of Utrecht. Three years later he became pastor of the Utrecht congregation. He was an advocate of a strong form of Calvinism (Gomarism) against the Arminians. The city of Utrecht perpetuated his memory by giving his name to the street in which he had lived.
