Prince Harry, 33, and actress Meghan Markle, 36, announced their engagement today. But before all thoughts turn to the excitement of wedding planning, it is worth looking back on the romantic relationship that has led the couple to this point - and the vastly different worlds they will bring together when they tie the knot. Here, FEMAIL examines just how Miss Markle, an American divorcee, has become a royal bride-to-be - despite the odds seemingly being stacked against them. Pictured clockwise from top left, the couple on a date in London; at a friend's wedding in Jamaica; making their public debut at the Invictus Games in Toronto; stealing a kiss at the polo in Berkshire. ...read

What happens to the leftover 'snowbabies'? Generous IVF couples with spare frozen embryos gift their future babies to complete strangers - but it can go terribly wrong
IVF couples who made the difficult yet generous decision to gift leftover embryos to infertile strangers have shared their stories - but some endings were far happier than others. Australian mother-of-two Natalie Parker is a startling example of how this game of trust can go horribly wrong, 60 Minutes found. Natalie (pictured left) and her husband decided to donate their spare frozen embryos to a childless couple after the process successfully gave them their two sons, Angus and Hugo. If youre planning to hit the Big Apple sometime soon, swing by the New York EDITION hotel on Madison Square Park for a cocktail to remember. The Lobby Bar, which boasts a warm ambiance complete with comfy sofas and high ceilings, serves up an array of refreshing beverages and equally quaffable snacks. Be sure to order the signature Edition Owl cocktail, which comes serves in a rather heavy owl-shaped bronze tankard. The heady blend of Absolut ELYX vodka, spiced rum, cardamom, coconut, lime, almond and peach doesnt come cheap at $30. But you can feel a little better about the dent on your wallet as $1 from every 'Ollie' sold goes to the non-profit Wild Bird Fund. Meanwhile, the 17th Century Lady a new edition to the list - features an unusual Early Grey-infused tequila. If youre into more classic creations, the dirty martini is on point, with large buttery olives served teetering on top of a daintily-etched glass.

If youre looking for a traditional British fix this season then head to the Stafford Londons Game Bird restaurant. The cosy haunt, located in the heart of Mayfair, is guaranteed to get you in a festive mood with a roaring fire to boot. Although the menu is focused on meat, with dishes including Hogget Hotpot and Venison Stew, there are delicious vegetarian options also available. The night I popped by I took a friend who was vegan, and the staff we readily able to accommodate her by slightly altering some of the ingredients. I tried some deliciously plump oysters, a divine serving of coal-cooked celeriac and a selection of cheese to finish. To wash it all down I opted for a classic olive vodka martini. Be sure to ask for a tour of the 350-year-old wine cellar and the American Bar is a sight to behold, with the ceilings covered with USA-themed memorabilia left behind by guests.

Put your glad rags on and saunter down to a previously members-only restaurant at The Ned, an Aladdin's cave of culinary wonders nestled in the heart of London. Lutyens Grill, a former bank manager's office which is hidden from view behind a wooden and mirror-clad wall, is a gem of a place. The secret spot transports you to a world of old-school steak dinners, with a splash of Orient thrown into the mix. Think regal leather dining chairs, Persian rugs under foot and tasselled lights hanging overhead. The eatery, which set to open its doors to the public this December, features a warming menu guaranteed to satisfy the heartiest of appetites. Plump for a range of grilled beef cooked in varying ways or a mixed grill if you fancy sampling a rather splendid feast. For the non-meat eaters, the chargrilled cauliflower and superfood salad comes highly recommended. And to end on a high, the chocolate nemesis dares to be tackled.

Smiths of Smithfield has long been a stalwart of fine steaks, but its brand new Autumnal Dining Room menu has just been launched to show its prowess extends to more than just serving up a prime cut of beef. Fresh seafood dishes are the star of the starters show, including seared West Coast scallops which were melt-in-the-mouth delicious, while a hearty game terrine was deliciously moreish. As a main event, we couldnt resist plumping for a sirloin and a rib eye, which come with the most perfectly crunchy and fluffy chips you could ask for and dont forget to order a side of garlic and chilli spinach. However, theres a wealth of choice if you want something a little different with confit duck leg, Old spot pork loin Wellington and Clay-roasted spiced half chicken definitely on the wish list for a future visit.
SIOFRA BRENNAN

Pomona's, in trendy Notting Hill, is a great deal of fun. It manages to breathe sunshine into cloud-covered and often rainy London straight from the rolling hills of California, which inspires the menu here. The eatery is light and bright and airy and ever so slightly reminscent of a school canteen. The food however is leagues away from sloppy school dinners. You can share small plates (£7-£16) or opt for mains. We shared indulgent eggplant parm, buttery grilled corn, moreish sweet potato toast and a lime-drenched king prawn taco. But the star of the show was the wagyu cheeseburger. It will set you back £19 but it may be the best burger I've ever eaten. The juicy beef combined with the brioche bun and gooey melted cheese makes my mouth water even now. We were too full for pud, but I may well come back another time to sample the vegan pina colada cheesecake.

Dining at Michelin-starred Galvin at Windows, on the 28th floor of the Park Lane Hilton, feels like you've been let in on a very juicy secret. It's hard not to feel smug as the ever-charming staff guide you to your table and you look out at the magnificient view. It's hard to pull your eyes away from the skyline, but if you, the food is just as exquisite. The restaurant has launched its autumn menu and it reflects the season beautifully. I tucked into melt-in-the-mouth beetroot cured salmon served with a smooth-as-velvet horseradish cream, as well as an unctuous beef Bourguignon with a silky and rich red wine jus. I finished off the meal with a lip-smackingly good banoffee pie which avoided the usual pitfall of being too sweet. Dinner here is always perfection - and prices are reasonable if you choose the set menu: just £31 for two courses.

It's named after the very famous, and truly regal, crescent terrace in which it sits and you will certainly feel like royalty during your stay at The Royal Crescent Hotel & Spa in Bath. This Autumn, the hotel has partnered with Sipsmith to create a deluxe 'Gin Time' package for gin lovers that includes a stay in one of their sumptuous rooms, a gin flight and a Michelin-star-standard dinner. We stayed in the Ralph Allen Master Suite, which was quite simply the most plush set of rooms I have ever seen - and was bigger than my flat back home. The word luxury can't begin to describe it. Dinner was sublime, and they easily accommodated my vegan friend too. And the gin? Showcased in four elegant cocktails that went down far too easily. Prices start from £465 per room per night for one Deluxe Double Room, inclusive of gin flight and dinner. The experience is available Sunday to Thursday until Thursday November 23.

For any food fans serious about their brunch they should make their way to Sea Containers on Southbank. Located right beside the River Thames you can enjoy a veritable feast inside the ship-themed restaurant. Totally spoiled for choice, the weekend brunch options include delicately seasoned chicken and waffles, delicious chorizo and potato breakfast hash topped with perfect poached eggs, crab omelettes and of course a seafood platter promising oysters, scallops and ceviche. And if youre feeling peckish the truffle mac and cheese side will be perhaps one of the best youll ever taste. Of course weekend brunch isnt complete without a glass of Prosecco and with a bottomless option for £18 - it may be at the higher end of the price scale but you wont regret indulging.
NATALIE CORNER
Our favourite steak restaurant in London just got a whole lot better thanks to its delicious new seasonal menu that will make winter so much more bearable. As the eatery that does steak better than anyone else in the capital, meat lovers will be impressed by the variety of cuts on the menu. If you'd rather give your taste buds a whirl, you'll love the Forest of Dean wild boar cutlets and sausage served with roasted apple and parsnip, tasty tempura scallops with cauliflower served with American sturgeon caviar, and the ultimate fish and chip dish. Of course, the setting is second to none so expect an atmospheric night full of party tunes and a glamorous crowd.
The poshest sushi I had ever eaten before arriving at the sleek and oh-so-stylish Ginza Onodera in Mayfair was a delivery from You Me Sushi, so the bar was set quite low. And what a difference quality sushi skills make. We sat at the bar and watched our talented chef create art on a plate before our eyes. We sampled too many dishes to name, but a highlight to start was beautiful seared tuna in a thick miso sauce, topped with spring onion and a pretty edible flower. I could have licked the bowl clean. But the star of the show was the nigri. We tried three types of tuna - the fatty yellowtail was my favourite - salmon drizzled with miso, red prawn topped with caviar and even sea urchin. Every bite was melt in the mouth. The only downside? It will cost you. A lot. Tasting menus start from £150. But then again, it's still cheaper than a ticket to Japan - the only other place you can taste sushi this good.

Spitalfields has welcomed a new kid on the block with the Wringer + Mangle moving into what was once a fairly-ramshackle pub. The eatery - which started out in London Fields - has given its second venue a dose of tender loving care and it is now a cosy place to catch up with friends. The menu is hearty and warming, perfect as the colder weather blows in. The open kitchen serves up an array of tantalizing treats, from fennel tarts to crispy pigs head croquettes. It's refreshing to see so much veg on the menu and the pieces you get on your plate are nice and chunky. On the drinks front there is a bottomless brunch option and the bartender rustled me up a pretty delectable martini. The well-selected music playlist will also help get you in the swing of things. An unfussy place to catch up with friends.

If you haven't been to the Ned in the City of London, you must. The former bank is vast and gives you that Alice in Wonderland feeling as soon as you step inside. There are a staggering nine restaurants to choose from, with Kaia serving up Asian-inspired cuisine. The informal spot is bustling in the evening, so be sure to book or nab a table early. Kaia has a great concise menu. The £10 vegetarian Rainbow poke bowl is a work of art and deliciously fresh. If you're good with spice give the chili edamame a go. The grilled asparagus is a milder option for those with a less snazzy palette. And to wash it all down, you must try the Banana Boulevardier cocktail. A bit like an Old Fashioned infused with a dash of tropical sunshine. And on the subject of tropical, why not finish things off with a serving of sweet roasted pineapple. For early birds there is a breakfast menu with coconut matcha lattes on offer.

Disney fans will love stepping into an Aladdin's Cave of Wonders for the Genie's Tea at Soho bakery Cutter and Squidge. The light and airy cake shop has just transformed its downstairs afternoon tea spot into a truly magical cave-like room that sparkles everywhere you look. Under purple lights, you are treated to some true food gems too, such as the unusual but moreish sweet starter of meringue, pomegranate and raspberry. Afternoon tea purists may not be happy at first that the traditional sweet scones have been swapped for savoury pepper and feta cheese swirls but there are more than enough treats to satisfy the sweetest of teeth. The finger sandwiches were particularly delicious, as was the ruby dream cake, an orange-scented morsel topped with a ruby jelly. As themed afternoon teas go, this one takes you to a whole new world. £29.50pp, bookings until end of January.

To catch the London skyline in a different way, head to the newly-opened The Ivy at Tower Bridge. The upscale eatery, which boasts more than 200 covers, has incredible views of the iconic drawbridge and of the city beyond. The whole lobster is pricey at £34 but highly recommended, with a large juicy specimen served up with fries on the side. As always at The Ivy, the martinis are spot on and there is a special Beefeater gin version as a 'nod to the Tower of London guards'. Try and reserve a seat on the terrace or by the window to devour the views alongside your meal.

If the idea of dining at the bowling alley conjures up images of greasy hot dogs and limp fries, then you havent experienced dining at All Star Lanes. The summer menu at Brick Lane has taken the gourmet burger and elevated it to new heights with a wagyu beef patty and lobster tail and a skewer of prawns on the side, while the starter of popcorn calamari was a heavenly combination of crisp batter and melt-in-the-mouth squid that was easily the best wed ever tasted. Mac and cheese is another highlight made with a trio of oozing fromages guaranteed to satisfy all dairy fiends, while even the chips have been given a high-end twist, sprinkled with truffle oil and grated truffle. The inventive cocktail menu might well distract you from the bowling, but dont forget to book your lane where you can order drinks to be delivered to your table as you aim for the strike.

Ten floors above Finsbury Square affords you more than a decent view of London's iconic skyline - and it's even more spectacular when you have a cocktail in hand on the Aviary bar and restaurant's new roof terrace. The swanky venue is on the 10th floor of the Montcalm Royal London House Hotel, and oozes casual elegance. It's easy to see why so many of the suited and booted flock here. Inside is the restaurant, where we were treated to a fresh and delicate portion of cured Brixham bass (£9.50) and a hearty hunk of tender Chateaubriand (£70 for two). Dessert came in liquid form: a sweet and sour Koko Mahalo (£12.50) - a sophisticated version of a Piña Colada. The quality of the food doesn't quite match up to the sky-high prices - but you're paying for the excellent service and that fantastic view.

Wrap yourself up and put the kettle on, it's getting colder. You can warm up however by drinking eteakets limited-edition Pumpkin Chai Tea. Real pumpkin pieces and pumpkin seeds give this black tea a silky-smooth finish. Combined with a liberal sprinkling of spices, this tea evokes sensations of crisp autumnal days, golden leaves crunching underfoot and cosying up beside a fire with a good book its autumn in a mug. Perfect for those of us who love the idea of hopping on board the Pumpkin Spice Latte wagon, but dont like coffee (or the calories!), this delicious tea makes a healthy, tasty alternative. £7.95.
Extra protein in ordinary items such as energy and chocolate bars is the trend of the day, and now Quaker Oats So Simple has brought out new protein-enriched instant oats in two flavours: Original and Cinnamon. The 100 per cent wholegrain breakfast is a great source of fibre and protein, according to Quaker, and it can be microwaved in minutes - perfect for before or after a quick work-out. RRP £2.59 for 8 sachets.
There are no shortage of artisan gins on the market now thanks to the boom in popularity of the classic gin and tonic. One of the newest is a limited edition honey-infused gin by Warner Edwards, which last year brought out a Rhubarb Gin. Its Honeybee Gin - a collaboration with the Royal Horticultural Society - has already been awarded Spirit of the Month by Fortnum & Mason and has a pleasantly smooth texture and gently sweet taste to counterbalance the bitter botanical notes. Each 70cl bottle has a RRP of £40.
Chai tea is the taste of cosy Autumn so tea makers T2 have released three new versions of this Indian classic in Bonfire Night-inspired flavours. You can choose from Popcorn, Honeycomb or Sticky Honey Chai, which are all loose leaf teas. The Sticky Honey Chai was our favourite for its rich notes of cinnamon and vanilla - perfect for infusing into hot milk for a homemade Chai Latte. Boxes of Popcorn and Honeycomb Chai cost £14, a bag of Sticky Honey Chai costs £16.
Did you know that beer could taste like a hoppy version of Champagne? Neither did I, but Sharp's Brewery and Camel Valley Vineyard have made it A Thing. The pair have teamed up to offer the luxurious vintage of beer - and it's been named the UKs best champagne beer at the World Beer Awards 2017. The luxury beer refreshes the palate with its crisp, sharp and citrusy taste and has the aroma of Champagne. Camel Valley Pilsner is now available to buy from the Sharps Brewery shop for £22.00 (including delivery).
Old Pulteney Single Malt Scotch Whisky has released its 25 Year Old expression. The whisky has been mellowed for a quarter of a century and matured in the invigorating sea air of Wick in the Highlands of Scotland. Aged at its own steady pace, the whisky began its journey in ex-bourbon American oak barrels for 22 years. Its spicy sweetness was later granted depth and colour by ex-oloroso Spanish oak butts until it reached the premium age of 25. The flavour is firmly anchored in bitter chocolate and creamy vanilla with hints of toffee sweetness and crisp overtones of fresh lemon and coconut while the finish is long and spicy.
To celebrate the autumn harvest and British Food Fortnight, Bills Restaurants will be going back to its roots as a British greengrocer with a generous initiative that promotes fresh, seasonal vegetables. In collaboration with the Alexandra Rose Charity, Bills Restaurants will donate 1kg of fresh vegetables to low-income families for every person that orders the Roasted Butternut Squash & Lentil Salad starter from their new seasonal autumn menu. The project will kick off during British Food Fortnight on the 23rd September and run until the 23rd October at Bills Restaurants nationwide.
Crafted in the stunning natural environment of Speyside, the 15 Years Old is created from fresh spring water from the Granty Burn, a stream flowing with soft and clear spring water. This unique expression has been matured in American oak and Spanish oak casks, adopting the fragrant air and rich woodland over time to become a full-bodied and vibrant dram. The rich taste is bursting, with notes of citrus fruits and has a creamy, warm and long-lasting finish.
