Alp may refer to:
The Alps (/ælps/; Italian: Alpi [ˈalpi]; French: Alpes [alp]; German: Alpen [ˈʔalpm̩]; Slovene: Alpe [ˈáːlpɛ]) are the highest and most extensive mountain range system that lies entirely in Europe, stretching approximately 1,200 kilometres (750 mi) across eight Alpine countries: Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Slovenia, and Switzerland. The Caucasus Mountains are higher, and the Urals longer, but both lie partly in Asia. The mountains were formed over tens of millions of years as the African and Eurasian tectonic plates collided. Extreme shortening caused by the event resulted in marine sedimentary rocks rising by thrusting and folding into high mountain peaks such as Mont Blanc and the Matterhorn. Mont Blanc spans the French–Italian border, and at 4,810 m (15,781 ft) is the highest mountain in the Alps. The Alpine region area contains about a hundred peaks higher than 4,000 m (13,123 ft), known as the "four-thousanders".
The altitude and size of the range affects the climate in Europe; in the mountains precipitation levels vary greatly and climatic conditions consist of distinct zones. Wildlife such as ibex live in the higher peaks to elevations of 3,400 m (11,155 ft), and plants such as Edelweiss grow in rocky areas in lower elevations as well as in higher elevations. Evidence of human habitation in the Alps goes back to the Paleolithic era.
The Alpine region of Switzerland, conventionally referred to as the Swiss Alps (German: Schweizer Alpen, French: Alpes suisses, Italian: Alpi svizzere, Romansh: Alps svizras), represents a major natural feature of the country and is, along with the Swiss Plateau and the Swiss portion of the Jura Mountains, one of its three main physiographic regions. The Swiss Alps extend over both the Western Alps and the Eastern Alps, encompassing an area sometimes called Central Alps. While the northern ranges from the Bernese Alps to the Appenzell Alps are entirely in Switzerland, the southern ranges from the Mont Blanc massif to the Bernina massif are shared with other countries such as France, Italy, Austria and Liechtenstein.
The Swiss Alps comprise almost all the highest mountains of the Alps, such as Monte Rosa (4,634 m), the Dom (4,545 m), the Lyskamm (4,527 m), the Weisshorn (4,506 m) and the Matterhorn (4,478 m). The other following major summits can be found in List of mountains of Switzerland.
Mountain biking is the sport of riding bicycles off-road, often over rough terrain, using specially designed mountain bikes. Mountain bikes share similarities with other bikes, but incorporate features designed to enhance durability and performance in rough terrain.
Mountain biking can generally be broken down into multiple categories: cross country, trail riding, all mountain (also referred to as "Enduro"), downhill, freeride and dirt jumping. Although the majority of mountain biking falls into the categories of Trail and Cross Country riding styles.
This individual sport requires endurance, core strength and balance, bike handling skills, and self-reliance. Advanced riders pursue both steep technical descents and high incline climbs. In the case of freeriding, downhilling, and dirt jumping, aerial manoeuvres are performed off both natural features and specially constructed jumps and ramps.
Mountain biking can be performed almost anywhere from a back yard to a gravel road, but the majority of mountain bikers ride off-road trails, whether country back roads, fire roads, or singletrack (narrow trails that wind through forests, mountains, deserts, or fields). There are aspects of mountain biking that are more similar to trail running than regular bicycling. Because riders are often far from civilization, there is a strong ethic of self-reliance in the sport. Riders learn to repair their broken bikes or flat tires to avoid being stranded miles from help. Many riders will carry a backpack, including a water bladder, containing all the essential tools and equipment for trailside repairs, and many riders also carry emergency supplies in the case of injury miles from outside help. Club rides and other forms of group rides are common, especially on longer treks. A combination sport named mountain bike orienteering adds the skill of map navigation to mountain biking.
The French Alps are the portions of the Alps mountain range that stand within France, located in the Rhône-Alpes and Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur regions. While some of the ranges of the French Alps are entirely in France, others, such as the Mont Blanc massif, are shared with Switzerland and/or Italy.
At 4,808 metres (15,774 ft), Mont Blanc (Italian: Monte Bianco), on the French-Italian border, is the highest mountain in the Alps, and the highest Western European mountain.
Notable towns in the French Alps include Grenoble, Chamonix, Annecy, Chambéry, Évian-les-Bains and Albertville.

A 1000km non-stop journey across the Dolomites, Eastern Alps and Swiss Alps. Exploration is as much about overcoming the unknown challenges of the road ahead as it is about learning of one's own physical and mental capabilities. On August 4th 2014 Mike Cotty faced the longest and hardest ride of his life, a personal challenge to see if it's possible to cycle over 1,000km and 21 mountains non-stop across the Dolomites, Eastern Alps and Swiss Alps from Conegliano, Italy, to Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, France. Thunderstorms during the darkest depths of the night, a bitter cold dawn on the Passo dello Stelvio, punishing headwinds and the will to overcome adversity and sleep deprivation from over 50 hours on the bike and 21,250 metres of elevation make this journey an inspiring test of human reserve....

My name is Ralf and I am addicted to bicycle touring :) On my fully loaded touring bicycle I travelled 2.747km from Riesa, Germany to Nice in France crossing the 10 highest passes of the Alps accumulating over 45.000m of altitude. I cycled in July and August when the passes were open and free from snow. The nights I spent mostly in my tent, sometimes I took cheap accomodations when I needed to rest or when I was in a city. I love bicycle touring and more videos like this will follow. Stay tuned. GO OUT AND CYCLE !!! If you have questions, don't hesitate to write me, I'll answer. I hope...

Expectations were flying high before the start of this year’s Bike Transalp. Team Centurion Vaude 1 consisting of German title defenders Markus Kaufmann and Jochen Kaess were bound to make history, aiming for their 4th consecutive win at Europe’s most prestigious MTB stage race. However, they faced some tough luck from the very beginning. Their Austrian team mates Daniel Geismayr and Hermann Pernsteiner took their chance and claimed the victory battling their way through the strongest field in the history of the race. BIKE TRANSALP - CALL OF THE MOUNTAINS gives an insight into the daily race routines of the pro teams and also features some of the international participants. Climb of Alpe d'Huez by Matra bike in 38 minutes 40 seconds (bike has electric motor in bottom bracket and battery in bottle cage). http://matra.com/ These bikes be hired all over the Alps and could be a good idea if your wife, girlfriend, dad, kids want to accompany you on a climb but don't have the power to get all the way to the top. A 9 year old girl climbed to the Col de la Bonette on the same model this summer. http://www.ledauphine.com/haute-provence/2013/08/05/a-9-ans-elle-franchit-le-col-de-la-bonnette They can also be used to explore the mountains and countryside leaving the car at home. ps I don't work for Matra, I just borrowed the bike.
Video of our annual 4 day transalp trip, with the route this year being the best we'd ever done by far with tons of amazing singletrack. I don't think you can have more riding fun in 4 days than this, and the weather was spot on! Route was roughly: Ischgl - Fimberpass - Sent - Scuol - S-Charl - Pass da Costainas - Ofenpass - Davo Plattas - Döss dal Termel - Val Mora - Lago San Giacomo di Fraele - Passo di Val Trela - Livigno - Mottolino - Forcola di Livigno - Passo del Bernina - Alp Grüm - Cadera - Pontresina - Celerina - Pass Suvretta - Bever.
I've said it before...probably the most fun i've had on two wheels. I started 3 rows back and completed the course in 1:07:08, in 78th place. Compared to 2015, i've had a stellar snow section and was able to maintain speed through most of the steep snow, some on my bike, some on my ass. My brakes started to fade in the top wood section in spite of using 4 pot shimano zee and sintered pads so i had to pump my levers from there on. This contributed to the already soul crushing arm pump and i had a little off in the lower wood section. I was absolutely not riding the woods at my regular speed. Still, got down in one piece with the bike still working and shaved off 22 minutes from my previous time. Totally happy! Bike: Specialized Enduro comp 2016 Camera: Gopro hero 5
This years ride on Pearl Izumi MTB, as part of UNT Bike Weekend in Uppsala. Unfortunately the battery died on me with 5 mins left of the race. Hope you enjoy!
At first sight many tasks seem impossible to us. But when we hang in and believe in ourselves, we finally succeed. We break the limits. We do the extraordinary. Seven days, 850 kilometres, more than 19.000 metres vertical ascent. This is the race of a lifetime. Crossing the Alps on a bike - the Tour Transalp is what dreams of ambitious cyclists around the world are made of. Seven stages covering four countries - 1100 participants take on the challenge of crossing one of the major mountain ranges of the world. Spectacular climbs and rapid descents in overwhelming scenery, the Tour Transalp is second to none when it comes to road bike stage races. Music by Elegy Music and various artists.

The concept of attempting an Everesting upon the newly sealed roads of Everest itself seemed completely crazy, especially considering the brutal headwinds, fiercely cold temperatures, and high altitude we'd be facing.
