Zimbabwe's ruling party has accused the country's army chief of "treasonable conduct" after he warned of a possible military intervention in politics.
General Constantino Chiwenga had challenged President Robert Mugabe after he sacked the vice-president.
Gen Chiwenga said the army was prepared to act to end purges within Mr Mugabe's Zanu-PF party.
The party said the general's comments were "calculated to disturb national peace... [and] incite insurrection".
In a statement, the party said it would never succumb to military threats, and that it "reaffirms the primacy of politics over the gun".
Breaking news:Mugabe is under army siege at his blue roof residence for the past two days,the army are not allowing him or any person to leave or enter his residence,its believed the army is demanding Mugabe to step down,heavily army can be seen around his residence and a road that leads to his house is completely shut down.
More information is that the army has withdrawn its escort from him leaving him with police and central intelligence.

Zimbabwe's Robert Mugabe has fired his vice president, Emmerson Mnangagwa - accusing him of being disloyal.
Mnangagwa, nicknamed "the Crocodile" had been Mugabe's political ally for nearly 40 years, having fought for independence from Britain.

Robert Mugabe
Robert Gabriel Mugabe (/muːˈɡɑːbiː/; born 21 February 1924) is the current President of Zimbabwe, serving since 22 December 1987. As one of the leaders of the rebel groups against white minority rule, he was elected as Prime Minister, head of government, in 1980, and served in that office until 1987, when he became the country's first executive head of state. He has led the Zimbabwe African National Union – Patriotic Front (ZANU–PF) since 1975.
Mugabe rose to prominence in the 1960s as the leader of the Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU) during the conflict against the conservative white-minority government of Rhodesia. Mugabe was a political prisoner in Rhodesia for more than 10 years between 1964 and 1974. Upon release Mugabe, along with Edgar Tekere, immediately left Rhodesia with the assistance of Rekayi Tangwena in 1975 to launch the fight during the Rhodesian Bush War from bases in Mozambique. At the end of the war in 1979, Mugabe emerged as a hero in the minds of many Africans. He won the general elections of 1980 after calling for reconciliation between the former belligerents, including white Zimbabweans and rival political parties, and thereby became Prime Minister on Zimbabwe's independence in April 1980.

The name Robert is a Germanic given name, from Proto-Germanic *χrōþi- "fame" and *berχta- "bright". Compare Old Dutch Robrecht and Old High German Hrodebert (a compound of hruod "fame, glory" and berht "bright"). It is also in use as a surname.
After becoming widely used in Continental Europe it entered England in its Old French form Robert, where an Old English cognate form (Hrēodbēorht, Hrodberht, Hrēodbēorð, Hrœdbœrð, Hrœdberð) had existed before the Norman Conquest. The feminine version is Roberta. The Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish form is Roberto.
Similar to the name, Richard, "Robert" is also a common name in many Germanic languages, including English, German, Dutch, Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, and Icelandic. It can be used as a French, Hungarian, Finnish, and Estonian name as well.

Zimbabwe's ruling party has accused the country's army chief of "treasonable conduct" after he warned of a possible military intervention in politics.
General Constantino Chiwenga had challenged President Robert Mugabe after he sacked the vice-president.
Gen Chiwenga said the army was prepared to act to end purges within Mr Mugabe's Zanu-PF party.
The party said the general's comments were "calculated to disturb national peace... [and] incite insurrection".
In a statement, the party said it would never succumb to military threats, and that it "reaffirms the primacy of politics over the gun".

In 1997, the new British government led by Tony Blair unilaterally stopped funding the "willing buyer, willing seller" land reform programme on the basis that the initial £44 million allocated under the Thatcher government was used to purchase land for members of the ruling elite rather than landless peasants. Furthermore, Britain's ruling Labour Party felt no obligation to continue paying white farmers compensation, or in minister Clare Short's words, "I should make it clear that we do not accept that Britain has a special responsibility to meet the costs of land purchase in Zimbabwe. We are a new Government from diverse backgrounds without links to former colonial interests. My own origins are Irish and as you know we were colonised not colonisers".[52]
Some commentators, such as Matthew Sweet in The Independent, hold Cecil Rhodes ultimately responsible:
... It was Cecil Rhodes who originated the racist 'land grabs' to which Zimbabwe's current miseries can ultimately be traced. It was Rhodes who in 1887 told the House Of Assembly in Cape Town, South Africa that 'the native is to be treated as a child and denied the franchise. We must adopt a system of despotism in our relations with the barbarians of Southern Africa'.

With the opposition trying to impeach him and his popularity at an all-time low, President Robert Mugabe has lashed out at Zimbabwe's white minority, threatening genocide trials for all who fought against him in the independence war.
Mugabe told supporters on Wednesday that Ian Smith, the white leader he helped overthrow two decades ago, and all whites who fought against black guerrillas would face trials for war crimes.
Speaking as he arrived for a debate in Oxford on Thursday, Ian Smith responded to these latest threats, saying Mugabe's actions belonged to a man clinging onto the last vestiges of power.
He challenged Mugabe to set up a truth and reconciliation committee, saying that he had nothing to fear.
Arriving at Oxford Union Thursday night, the former white leader of the former British colony of Rhodesia, Ian Smith laughed off President Mugabe's latest threat to put him on the stand.
Mugabe is calling for all whites who fought against black guerrillas to face trials for war crimes.
Mugabe has said the nation's 70,000 whites - less than 1 percent of the population of 13 million - mostly opposed his government and had spurned offers of forgiveness and reconciliation.
Smith rejected Mugabe threat, saying that the blame for the violence lay squarely on Mugabe's shoulders.

He said that the only way to establish the truth of Mugabe's accusations was to follow in the footsteps of South Africa's truth and reconciliation commission.

EU
Naast Zuma heeft ondertussen ook de Europese Unie zorgen geuit over de situatie in Zimbabwe. De EU heeft opgeroepen de dialoog te starten en te zoeken naar een vreedzame oplossing voor de ontstane situatie in het land. De constitutionele orde en het democratisch bestuur moeten daarbij gehandhaafd worden, stelt de EU.
Coup
Eerder op de ochtend meldde de regeringspartij ZANU-PF dat het leger in de nacht van dinsdag op woensdag de macht in het land heeft overgenomen.
Het leger ontkent dat sprake is van een staatsgreep. Op de staatstelevisie zei een woordvoerder van het leger dat het niet gaat om een staatsgreep, maar om een "bloedeloze correctie". De actie was "alleen op criminelen gericht", die sociaal en economisch lijden in het land zouden veroorzaken.
Opvolging
Aanleiding voor de onrust is het ontslag van de binnen de strijdkrachten populaire Mnangagwa. De politicus werd eerder gezien als één van de favorieten om Mugabe op te volgen. Door zijn vertrek leek Grace Mugabe de beste papieren te hebben om op termijn president te worden. De opvolgingskwestie loopt hoog op vanwege de slechte gezondheid van de hoogbejaarde Mugabe.
De echtgenote van de president kon rekenen op de steun van de jongerenafdeling van regeringspartij ZANU-PF, die zich profileert als de "nieuwe generatie" binnen de Zimbabwaanse politiek. Dat kamp staat tegenover de "oude garde", die onder andere worden gesteund door de invloedrijke vereniging voor oorlogsveteranen, een overtuigd bondgenoot van Mnangagwa.
Overgangsregering
Ondertussen zou de legerleiding in het land al maanden in gesprek zijn met de oppositie over een mogelijke overgangsregering. Dat zei een belangrijke oppositiefunctionaris, die anoniem bleef, tegen de Britse krant The Guardian.
Een tweede bron zegt dat president Mugabe nog deze week opstapt. Hij zou vervolgens worden vervangen door zijn voormalige vicepresident, Emmerson Mnangagwa. Oppositieleiders zouden aantreden als vicepresident en premier.
De berichten van deze bronnen zijn echter niet bevestigd door bijvoorbeeld het leger of door andere functionarissen.

EU
Naast Zuma heeft ondertussen ook de Europese Unie zorgen geuit over de situatie in Zimbabwe. De EU heeft opgeroepen de dialoog te starten en te zoeken naar een vreedzame oplossing voor de ontstane situatie in het land. De constitutionele orde en het democratisch bestuur moeten daarbij gehandhaafd worden, stelt de EU.
Coup
Eerder op de ochtend meldde de regeringspartij ZANU-PF dat het leger in de nacht van dinsdag op woensdag de macht in het land heeft overgenomen.
Het leger ontkent dat sprake is van een staatsgreep. Op de staatstelevisie zei een woordvoerder van het leger dat het niet gaat om een staatsgreep, maar om een "bloedeloze correctie". De actie was "alleen op criminelen gericht", die sociaal en economisch lijden in het land zouden veroorzaken.
Opvolging
Aanleiding voor de onrust is het ontslag van de binnen de strijdkrachten populaire Mnangagwa. De politicus werd eerder gezien als één van de favorieten om Mugabe op te volgen. Door zijn vertrek leek Grace Mugabe de beste papieren te hebben om op termijn president te worden. De opvolgingskwestie loopt hoog op vanwege de slechte gezondheid van de hoogbejaarde Mugabe.
De echtgenote van de president kon rekenen op de steun van de jongerenafdeling van regeringspartij ZANU-PF, die zich profileert als de "nieuwe generatie" binnen de Zimbabwaanse politiek. Dat kamp staat tegenover de "oude garde", die onder andere worden gesteund door de invloedrijke vereniging voor oorlogsveteranen, een overtuigd bondgenoot van Mnangagwa.
Overgangsregering
Ondertussen zou de legerleiding in het land al maanden in gesprek zijn met de oppositie over een mogelijke overgangsregering. Dat zei een belangrijke oppositiefunctionaris, die anoniem bleef, tegen de Britse krant The Guardian.
Een tweede bron zegt dat president Mugabe nog deze week opstapt. Hij zou vervolgens worden vervangen door zijn voormalige vicepresident, Emmerson Mnangagwa. Oppositieleiders zouden aantreden als vicepresident en premier.
De berichten van deze bronnen zijn echter niet bevestigd door bijvoorbeeld het leger of door andere functionarissen.

ZIMBABWE leader Robert Mugabe has been removed from power with tanks spotted rolling through the streets of the country’s capital Harare.
The Zimbabwe army had denied a coup after announcing on state media President Robert Mugabe and his family are safe with forces “targeting criminals around him”.
Army spokesman Major General SB Moyo said: “We wish to make this abundantly clear this is not a military takeover of government.
“What the Zimbabwe defence forces is doing is to pacify a degenerating political, social and economic situation in our country, which if not addressed may result in violent conflict.”
Video showed military tanks heading toward the capital sparking rumours of a coup, with gunshots and explosions heard overnight in Harare.
Witnesses reported gunfire near President Mugabe’s private residence in Borrowdale, but there is no confirmation.
Chris Mutsvangwa, chairman of the Zimbabwe war veterans’ group, praised the night's events as a “bloodless correction of gross abuse of power” by members of 93-year-old President Mugabe’s Government.
The Zimbabwe military also detained finance minister Ignatius Chombo, who was a leading member of the so-called G40 faction of the ruling Zanu-PF party, which is led by President Mugabe’s wife, Grace Mugabe.
The takeover comes followings a battle over who will succeed President Mugabe.
The sacking, last week, of Emerson Mnangagwa, the vice president and former spy chief, who has strong support from Zimbabwe’s armed forces opened a road to power for Grace Mugabe.
After the military takeover, Major General Moyo urged calm across the country, insisting “as soon as the armed forces are done the situation will come to normalcy”.
He added: “We urge you to remain calm and limit unnecessary movement. However, we encourage those who are employed and those who are employed and those with essential business in the city to continue their normal actives as usual.”
The British embassy advised Britons to remain at home because of the “uncertain political situation”.
The US embassy also issued a warning to Americans in Zimbabwe, they urged people to “take shelter in place until further notice”.

Woensdagochtend waren zeker drie explosies te horen in het centrum van Harare, de hoofdstad van Zimbabwe. Ook zou er zijn geschoten in de wijk waar de ambtswoning van Mugabe staat. Plaatselijke bronnen melden dat de bevolking van Harare woensdagochtend wel gewoon aan het werk gaat.

Today's show we are talking about the overthrow of the Long time dictator of Zimbabwe (formerly Rhodesia) Robert Mugabe. Last week, Mugabe fired former vice president 75 year old Emmerson Mnangagwa. This caused tension in the country as the military threatened to take action against Mugabe and his ruling party called Zanu-PF party. Yesterday the army took Harare and now has Mugabe under arrest. Political turmoil and economic sanctions has plagued this country for many many years.
The latest political developments in Zimbabwe are believed to be a culmination of tensions that have been brewing within ZANU-PF for quite a while. Some say wheels started coming off in 2014 when then Vice-President Joice Mujuru was axed. Emmerson Mnangagwa was appointed as her successor until he was also shown the door by President Robert Mugabe last week.
