Comfort women were women and girls who were forced into sexual slavery by the Imperial Japanese Army in occupied territories before and during World War II.
The name "comfort women" is a translation of the Japanese ianfu (慰安婦), a euphemism for "prostitute(s)". Estimates vary as to how many women were involved, with numbers ranging from as low as 20,000 (by Japanese historian Ikuhiko Hata) to as high as 360,000 to 410,000 (by a Chinese scholar); the exact numbers are still being researched and debated. Many of the women were from occupied countries, including Korea, China, and the Philippines, although women from Burma, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan (then a Japanese dependency), Indonesia (then the Dutch East Indies), East Timor (then Portuguese Timor), and other Japanese-occupied territories were used for military "comfort stations". Stations were located in Japan, China, the Philippines, Indonesia, then Malaya, Thailand, Burma, New Guinea, Hong Kong, Macau, and French Indochina. A smaller number of women of European origin from the Netherlands and Australia were also involved.
Japanese may refer to:
Comfort (or comfortability, or being comfortable) is a sense of physical or psychological ease, often characterized as a lack of hardship. Persons who are lacking in comfort are uncomfortable, or experiencing discomfort. A degree of psychological comfort can be achieved by recreating experiences that are associated with pleasant memories, such as engaging in familiar activities, maintaining the presence of familiar objects, and consumption of comfort foods. Comfort is a particular concern in health care, as providing comfort to the sick and injured is one goal of healthcare, and can facilitate recovery. Persons who are surrounded with things that provide psychological comfort may be described as being "in their comfort zone".
Because of the personal nature of positive associations, psychological comfort is highly subjective.
The use of "comfort" as a verb generally implies that the subject is in a state of pain, suffering or affliction, and requires alleviation from that state. Where the term is used to describe the support given to someone who has experienced a tragedy, the word is synonymous with consolation or solace. However, comfort is used much more broadly, as one can provide physical comfort to someone who is not in a position to be uncomfortable. For example, a person might sit in a chair without discomfort, but still find the addition of a pillow to the chair to increase their feeling of comfort.
A woman is a female human. The term woman is usually reserved for an adult, with the term girl being the usual term for a female child or adolescent. The term woman is also sometimes used to identify a female human, regardless of age, as in phrases such as "women's rights". "Woman" may also refer to a person's gender identity. Women with typical genetic development are usually capable of giving birth from puberty until menopause. In the context of gender identity, transgender people who are biologically determined to be male and identify as women cannot give birth. Some intersex people who identify as women cannot give birth due to either sterility or inheriting one or more Y chromosomes. In extremely rare cases, people who have Swyer syndrome can give birth with medical assistance. Throughout history women have assumed or been assigned various social roles.
The spelling of woman in English has progressed over the past millennium from wīfmann to wīmmann to wumman, and finally, the modern spelling woman. In Old English, wīfmann meant "female human", whereas wēr meant "male human". Mann or monn had a gender-neutral meaning of "human", corresponding to Modern English "person" or "someone"; however, subsequent to the Norman Conquest, man began to be used more in reference to "male human", and by the late 13th century had begun to eclipse usage of the older term wēr. The medial labial consonants f and m in wīfmann coalesced into the modern form "woman", while the initial element, which meant "female", underwent semantic narrowing to the sense of a married woman ("wife"). It is a popular misconception that the term "woman" is etymologically connected with "womb", which is from a separate Old English word, wambe meaning "stomach" (of male or female; modern German retains the colloquial term "Wampe" from Middle High German for "potbelly"). Nevertheless, such a false derivation of "woman" has appeared in print.
Jan Ruff O’Herne (born January 18, 1923) is a Dutch Australian human rights activist known for her vocal campaigns and speeches against war rape. During World War II, O’Herne was among young women forced into sexual slavery by the Japanese Imperial Army. Fifty years after the end of the war, O’Herne decided to speak out publicly to demand a formal apology from the Japanese government and to highlight the plight of other "comfort women".
Ruff-O’Herne was born in 1923 in Bandoeng in the Dutch East Indies, a former Southeast Asian colony of the Dutch Empire. During the Japanese occupation of the Dutch East Indies, O’Herne and thousands of Dutch women were forced into hard physical labor at a prisoner-of-war camp at a disused army barracks in Ambarawa, Indonesia. In February 1944, high ranking Japanese officials arrived at the camp and ordered all single girls seventeen years and older to line up. Ten girls were chosen; O’Herne, twenty one years old at the time, was one of them. O’Herne and six other young women were taken by Japanese officers to an old Dutch colonial house at Semarang. The girls thought they would be forced into factory work or used for propaganda. They soon realized that the colonial house was to be converted to a military brothel.

[Anchor Lead] A 1944 video of Korean sex slaves of the Japanese army has been disclosed to the public for the first time. The video is expected to further solidify evidence that the Japanese army did have a sex slavery camp. [Pkg] Seven young women tremble in fear. They have terrified looks on their faces, and they are all barefoot. They are the so-called "comfort women" of the Japanese army who were taken prisoners of war by the Combined Forces in September 1944 in Songshan, China. A comparison of the video with a photo showing late Park Young-shim, who was pregnant at the time, reveals that two of the women in the video and in the photo have identitical faces, hairstyles and clothes. The same women wearing the same clothes also appear in other photos of POWs that had been disclosed ea...

02/04/2007 Jan Ruff-O'Herne told her shocking story on Australian Story in 2001 - a secret that took her 50 years to come to terms with before finally, she revealed it in a letter to her two daughters. An idyllic childhood in Java was brought to an abrupt end by the Japanese occupation during Word War Two. Aged 21, she was taken from her family and repeatedly abused, beaten and raped - forced to be a sex slave for the Japanese military. The term coined for this brutal sex slavery was 'comfort woman'. But since revealing her 'uncomfortable truth' Jan Ruff-O'Herne's suffering has been transformed into something affirmative. In February this year, this 84-year-old Adelaide grandmother made the long journey to testify before Congress in Washington DC. The Congressional hearing was the pinn...

The issue of 'comfort women', women abducted from Korea and enslaved by Imperial Japan, has long complicated Japan-South Korea relations, and now a decision by the US city San Francisco to accept a memorial to the women has prompted accusations of 'Japan-bashing' from the island nation. A decision by San Francisco to recognise a memorial to women forced into sexual slavery by the Japanese military in World War II has strained ties with its sister city, Osaka. The statue is part of a long-running effort by activists to shed light on a very dark chapter in the history of the conflict. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has called for South Korea to remove similar statues, while South Korean President Moon Jae-in has cast doubt on a 2015 agreement intended to settle the traumatic legacy betw...

As the Emperor of Japan makes a historic visit to the Philippines, the legacy of its soldiers's use of Filipinas as comfort women during World War Two hangs heavy. Diplomatic relations were restored 60 years ago but Japan has yet to apologise to women who were forced to be sex slaves. This is the only known footage of "comfort women" in existence. Historians estimate that as many as 200,000 women and girls from occupied countries like Korea, China and the Philippines were forced to work in brothels run by the Japanese Imperial Army during WWII. This is an edited version of a video and comments uploaded by PropagandaBuster (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rL9TCbBHQjs). PropagandaBuster, the copyright holder, has graciously consented to this re-post. Aside from a few editing changes and some deletions, one important correction has been made. In the original video, PropagandaBuster inadvertently states that the Korean women in question were captured in the Philippines. However as the U.S. Army report states, they were in fact captured in Burma (present day Myanmar). There is a contentious issue between the nations of Japan and South Korea regarding certain women known as "Comfort Women." Simply this issue is that the Koreas are claiming that the Japanese during and before World War Two forced Korean women to perform as "sex slaves"...

【The Comfort Women Controversy : Sex Slaves or Prostitutes】 《Please spread this message to as many as possible!》 Koreans claim that C.W. were sex slaves abducted by the Japanese armed forces. However, the claim has no ground at all. Thorough research reveals that Comfort Women were nothing but, professional prostitutes who were paid for their services. Koreans fabricated history to accuse Japan. No former Comfort Women ever proved that she was abducted by Japanese armed forces. A.U.S. government war report simply states that Comfort Women are professional prostitutes. Prof. Ahn Byong-jick of Seoul University concludes that Comfort Women were prostitutes and home of them were abducted by Japanese armed forces. There are some documents that assert Coercive recruitment of Comfort Women. The...

Jan Ruff O'Herne has a captivating lightness of spirit which you might find surprising given her incredible story. It was an experience she kept hidden for 50 years until launching into a journey of truth and healing late in life. Read more: http://www.abc.net.au/tv/talkingheads/txt/s2492804.htm
