Togo (i/ˈtoʊɡoʊ/), officially the Togolese Republic (French: République Togolaise), is a country in West Africa bordered by Ghana to the west, Benin to the east and Burkina Faso to the north. It extends south to the Gulf of Guinea, where its capital Lomé is located. Togo covers 57,000 square kilometres (22,000 sq mi), making it one of the smallest countries in Africa, with a population of approximately 7.5 million.
Togo is a tropical, sub-Saharan nation, highly dependent on agriculture, with a climate that provides good growing seasons. The official language is French, with many other languages spoken in Togo, particularly those of the Gbe family. The largest religious group in Togo consists of those with indigenous beliefs, and there are significant Christian and Muslim minorities. Togo is a member of the United Nations, African Union, Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, South Atlantic Peace and Cooperation Zone, La Francophonie and Economic Community of West African States.
From the 11th to the 16th century, various tribes entered the region from all directions. From the 16th century to the 18th century, the coastal region was a major trading center for Europeans in search of slaves, earning Togo and the surrounding region the name "The Slave Coast". In 1884, Germany declared Togoland a protectorate. After World War I, rule over Togo was transferred to France. Togo gained its independence from France in 1960.

Plot: Shinnojo, a low level samurai, lives with his pretty, dutiful and loyal wife Kayo. He has come to find his position in a castle as a food-taster for a feudal lord to be boring and pointless, and talks about opening a kendo school open to boys of all castes where he can teach the use of the sword. Before he can act on his dream he becomes ill with a fever after tasting some sashimi made from shell fish, but an investigation reveals that the poisoning was not due to a human conspiracy, but a poor choice of food out of season. After three days he awakes but finds that the toxin from the food has blinded him. Kayo is summoned by Shinnojo's family to explain how the couple will survive. His uncle laments that he no longer knows anybody with influence in the castle, and asks Kayo if she knows of anybody. She relates how Toya Shimada, the chief duty officer in the castle and a samurai of high rank, offered to help and they tell her to act upon his offer of assistance. A message from the castle brings the good news that Shinnojo's stipend of rice will remain the same, and for life but his aunt tells him that Kayo was seen with another man. He has Tohuhei, his faithful servant, follow her. Kayo notices that she is being followed, and although Tokuhei offers to cover for her, she reveals to Shinnojo that Shimada offered to help but with a price, shown when he forced himself upon her. He then solicited two additional trysts by threatening to tell Shinnojo about the first. An enraged Shinnojo divorces her and orders her out of his house. When it is revealed to him that Shimada had nothing to do with maintaining his stipend, but that it came out of gratitude from the lord of the clan himself, Shinnojo seeks to renew his skill with the sword as a blind man to avenge the dishonor of Kayo. Through Tokuhei he sends a message to Shimada to set up a duel, with the additional message to not underestimate him. The two samurai meet at the stables near the river to decide their destinies.

She's no match for Bebel's tricks, despite cruel abuse, but the gang also annoys the public, including the dumb police commissioner. Plot: Movie cowboy star Spencer Yorke, tired of the Hollywood life, refuses to sign the new contract offered him by producer Jack Kingswell, and he and his pal Buckshot go to Arizona in search of a ranch to buy. The cowtown of Taylorsville is so dull that Sheriff Clem Baker bemoans the lack of criminal activity, and his daughter Mary, a real estate agent, finds the town equally boring. Her kid brother Jimmy, a big fan of Spencer Yorke, tries to persuade his father to let him visit "Ghost Town," nearby and deserted. Upon his arrival, Jimmy recognizes Spencer, but he insists his name is George Weston. Mary discovers his true identity when she sells him a ranch, but she gives him a pledge of secrecy. Three big-city gangsters, Johnny Sampson, Pretty-Boy Hogan and "Midget", fleeing their latest crime, are hiding out in the closed saloon in "Ghost Town." Jimmy, disobeying his father, rides into the town and is taken prisoner by the criminals as they believe he has been sent to spy on them. They plan to ambush and kill the Sheriff and Yorke, whom they think is a G-man, when they come looking for the boy.

BIAFRA: ODUDUWA REPUBLIC IS NOW ON THE GO
The U.S. Embassy has received reports that several Togolese opposition political parties have called for protests on Saturday, October 21. To date, authorities have approved one demonstration to take place in the town of Tsévié, 35 km north of Lomé. Marches in Lomé historically take place in central, northern, and northeastern sections of the city before finishing along the waterfront. However, plans for additional protests remain fluid. Traffic disruptions in Lomé may occur, and public bus and private taxi services may also be impacted. Although the U.S. Embassy is not presently aware of specific plans for protests in the rest of the country, demonstrations in other cities, notably in Sokodé, frequently accompany calls for protests in Lomé. Protest-related violence has resulte...
Togolese opposition parties will begin the latest round of anti-Gnassingbe protests today. The protests are expected to span a two-day period – October 4 – October 5, 2017. The coalition accuses the government of not responding favourably to their requests after the last series of protests. An advertisement of the march listed three points of convergence, Atikoume/ Akossombo, Etablissement CCP and Be-Gakpoto. Its last political move was a national shutdown call last week. It was largely observed in the capital, Lome and other parts of the country. The main request of the coalition is for incumbent Faure Gnassingbe to leave power after 12 years in charge. His current mandate secured in 2015 runs till 2020. The opposition is calling for an immediate end to the Gnassingbe dynasty which...

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the African Union (AU), and the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS) have been following closely the socio-political developments in the Togolese Republic. The three organizations take note in particular of the passage of the draft constitutional bill to amend relevant articles of the Togolese constitution. They observe that it is an important step in bringing Togo in conformity with democratic norms reflecting best practices in West Africa. ECOWAS, AU and UNOWAS call on the Government to set a date for the organization of the referendum on the draft bill. They encourage the opposition to take this opportunity to further advance the constitutional reforms. ECOWAS, AU and UNOWAS appeal to all Togoles...
Despite Mr Gnassingbé’s best efforts to quash the protests, they continue. Initially centred around Lomé, they have spread to other parts of the country, including Sokodé, Togo’s second city and a traditional stronghold of the Union for the Republic (UNIR), the ruling party. The government cuts the internet to stifle criticism. At least three people have been killed. The police in Lomé threw tear gas into people’s houses, “creating terror”, says one witness. A bill that would limit presidents to two terms was drawn up to appease the opposition. When UNIR said it would rush this through the National Assembly, where it holds 62 of 91 seats, the protests stopped temporarily. But it was soon revealed that the two-term restriction would not apply retroactively, allowing Mr Gnassingbé, who is...

Residents in Togo's capital Lome, have welcome the move by the government to import cleaner fuel into the country. Togo is one of five African nations that announced a ban on the importation of fuels with high levels of sulphur from European manufacturers that are exploiting the weak regulatory policies in the West African region. The World Health Organization considers sulphur particles emitted by diesel engines as one of the major contributors to air pollution. This was meant to be a simple day: wake up and go to Benin. However, I woke up feeling terrible which was the first issue. I decided to press on to the border from Lome, but once I got there I was turned away because they no longer issue visas at the border. Thus, I had to return to Togo and to Lome. When I got to Lome, I fell really sick and realized I had malaria. This is my second time with malaria now in Africa, but this one hit pretty bad. I'm lucky I treated it so quickly. Basically, I had to cut out two days of filming because I was lying in bed with zero energy, thus why this is a 5 day episode. Once the malaria cleared up enough, I jumped back on my scooter and left Togo. My ride to Benin was short, and I arrived happily at Grand Popo and a Reggae hostel on the beach. To...
Togo latest country to lose web access as regimes increasingly shut down Internet to control protests After 50 years of repressive rule by the same family, the people of Togo rebelled. More than 100,000 protesters filled the streets of the small West African nation this month. The regime responded with a strong-arm tactic that has become increasingly popular among the world's autocracies: It shut down the Internet, making it almost impossible for its opponents to use social media to organize. On Sunday, for a sixth consecutive day, the shutdown was still in effect. The Togolese people had no access to Facebook, WhatsApp or any other Internet services on their mobile phones – the main way in which Africans gain access to the Internet – although there were reports late on Sunday night...

For the fourth time in his career, Togo's Francis Kone has helped save someone's life on the football pitch. 26-year-old Kone plies his trade in the Czech first league with Slovacko. Over the weekend, his team took on the Bohemians. In the 29th minute, Bohemians goalkeeper Martin Borkovec collided with a teammate and lay motionless on the ground. Kone reacted quickly and was able to stop the goalkeeper from swallowing his tongue, allowing him to breathe freely. The league called Kone the "hero" of the match.

Everything I do Is all done for you
Lady I'm yours
And everywhere I go
You're always on my mind
You're all I adore
And I'll go
Outta my way
Just to assure
That our love endures I'm yours
Girl I'm never far away I'll be right there (right there)
To keep you nice and warm I'm rushing right home
Girl I'm never far away I'll be right there (right there)
To protect you from the storm I'm rushing right home
Girl I'll be there I'll be right there
I don't need you say
That I love you
A million times a day
Just the little things I do
All done for you
That's how I display
Love
And I'll go
Out of my way
Just to assure you baby
That our love endures I'm yours
Girl I'm never far away I'll be right there (right there)

To protect you from the storm I'm rushing right home
Girl I'll be there I'll be right there
You don't have to go and check my pager
Check my phone and search my pants to figure me out (ha)
Cause I'm an honest man
Don't need a plan, a stronger man
Cause girl there is no doubt
My love's real (as real as it comes)
Even though we are a million miles away from each other
I'm still right here, right here for you
(Here for you, here for you) I could search a million years
And still I wouldn't find anyone as beautiful as you
So rest assured our love endures I'm never far away...
