Muhteşem Yüzyıl

Muhteşem Yüzyıl (Turkish pronunciation: [muhteˈʃɛm ˈjyzjɯl], English: The Magnificent Century) is a Turkish historical fiction television series. Written by Meral Okay and Yılmaz Şahin, it is based on the life of Ottoman Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent, the longest reigning Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, and his wife Hürrem Sultan, a slave girl who became Sultana. It was originally broadcast on Show TV and then transferred to Star TV.

Plot

Succeeding his father, Sultan Selim I, at the age of 26, Sultan Süleyman I became the tenth sultan of the Ottoman Empire. This series captures the essence of being a sultan, prince, and govenor, yet also introduces life as a sultana, concubine, or even political refugee. The series also focuses on Süleyman's legal wife and throne-sweetheart, Hürrem Sultan, and her constant, messy battle to keep concubines out of the Sultan's chambers.

As the harem heats up, so do the cannons against infidels. While women poison, and men stab, the beautiful entanglements between slaves and princes, sultans and sultanas, and even soldiers with city-girls, bring light to the darkest corners of the palace. Including Süleyman's best friend, İbrahim Paşa, having feelings for Süleyman's sister Hatice Sultan, but his confused emotions for another could land him on the chopping block, literally.

Muhteşem Yüzyıl: Kösem (Turkish pronunciation: [muhteˈʃɛm ˈjyzjɯl cøˈsem], English: The Magnificent Century: Kösem) is a Turkish television sequel to the 2011 Turkish television period drama Muhteşem Yüzyıl. Written by Yılmaz Şahin, Nüket Bıçakçı and Sevgi Yılmaz, it recounts the life of Kösem Sultan, a slave girl who became one of the most powerful women in Ottoman history after she was captured and sent to the harem of Sultan Ahmed I.

The first episodes of the series were filmed in Chios, Greece. An excerpt of the show was screened in Cannes, France at the annual international television festival MIPCOM about a month before its official premiere on Star TV on November 12, 2015.

Plot

Anastasia (also referred as Nasia), is a 13-year-old Greek girl who lives an idyllic life in Tinos. Previously, she was painted with a lamb in her hands. This painting was later sent to the Topkapi Palace, where it was spotted by Ahmed, the young Ottoman Sultan, who has just ascended the throne. Due to the impression made on him, Safiye Sultan ordered the girl to be brought to the Topkapi Palace. Nasia showed her repelllant, hot-headed and childish personality, as this was the first time she ever had to face with real difficulties. She swore that she will return to her home. When she arrived to the Palace, Ahmed started to meet Nasia more often. As she has never experienced love before, she rejected Ahmed's love, but later she started exploring the meaning of love, and began to "grow up". Because of her feelings for Ahmed, she changed her mind, and realised that they're destined for each other. Nasia even risked her life for her lover. Due to her bravery and seemingly invulnerability, she became more and more powerful. She changed her name to Kösem, and eventually she became the most powerful Sultana in the Ottoman history.

Hagia Sophia

Hagia Sophia (from the Greek: Ἁγία Σοφία, "Holy Wisdom"; Latin: Sancta Sophia or Sancta Sapientia; Turkish: Ayasofya) is a former Christian patriarchal basilica (church), later an imperial mosque, and now a museum (Ayasofya Müzesi) in Istanbul, Turkey. From the date of its construction in 537 until 1453, it served as an Orthodox cathedral and seat of the Patriarch of Constantinople, except between 1204 and 1261, when it was converted to a Roman Catholic cathedral under the Latin Empire. The building was a mosque from 29 May 1453 until 1931. It was then secularized and opened as a museum on 1 February 1935.

Famous in particular for its massive dome, it is considered the epitome of Byzantine architecture and is said to have "changed the history of architecture". It remained the world's largest cathedral for nearly a thousand years, until Seville Cathedral was completed in 1520. The current building was originally constructed as a church between 532 and 537 on the orders of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I and was the third Church of the Holy Wisdom to occupy the site, the previous two having both been destroyed by rioters. It was designed by the Greek geometers Isidore of Miletus and Anthemius of Tralles.

Kösem Sultan

Kösem Sultan (Turkish pronunciation: [cøˈsem sulˈtan]) (fully Devletlu İsmetlu Mahpeyker Kösem Valide Sultan Aliyyetü'ş-Şân Hazretleri; c. 1590 – 2 September 1651) – also known as Mahpeyker Sultan (Turkish pronunciation: [mahpejˈkeɾ sulˈtan]) – was one of the most powerful women in Ottoman history. Favourite consort and later wife of Ottoman Sultan Ahmed I (r. 1603–1617), she achieved power and influenced the politics of the Ottoman Empire through her husband, then through her sons Murad IV (r. 1623–1640) and Ibrahim (r. 1640–1648), and finally through her minor grandson Mehmed IV (r. 1648–1687). She was Valide Sultan when her sons Murad IV and Ibrahim reigned as Ottoman sultans. She was a prominent figure during the Sultanate of Women. After her death, she was known by the names "Valide-i Maktule" (murdered mother), and "Valide-i Șehide" (martyred mother).

Biography

Early life

Kösem was of Greek origin, the daughter of a priest on the island of Tinos. Her maiden name was Anastasia. She was bought as a slave in Ottoman Bosnia by the Bosnian beylerbey, and sent to Constantinople, the Ottoman capital, at the age of fifteen, to the harem of Sultan Ahmed I after cancelling her education in Constantinople. Upon her conversion to Islam, her name was changed to Mahpeyker (Moon-Shaped), and later by Sultan Ahmed I to Kösem. She was transferred to the old palace on the death of Sultan Ahmed in 1617, but returned as Valide Sultan, when her son Murad IV was enthroned in 1623.
