Carl W. Stalling (November 10, 1891 – November 29, 1972) was an American composer and arranger for music in animated films. He is most closely associated with the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies shorts produced by Warner Bros., where he averaged one complete score each week, for 22 years.
Stalling was born to Ernest and Sophia C. Stalling. His parents were from Germany; his father arrived in the United States in 1883. The family settled in Lexington, Missouri where his father was a carpenter. He started playing piano at six. By the age of 12, he was the principal piano accompanist in his hometown's silent movie house. For a short period, he was also the theatre organist at the St. Louis Theatre, which eventually became Powell Symphony Hall.
By his early 20s, he was conducting his own orchestra and improvising on the organ at the Isis Movie Theatre in Kansas City. During that time, he met and befriended a young Walt Disney who was producing animated comedy shorts in Kansas City. Stalling composed several early cartoon scores for Walt Disney, including Plane Crazy and The Gallopin' Gaucho in 1928 (but not Steamboat Willie, Disney's first released sound short), and even spoke Mickey Mouse's first words in The Karnival Kid in 1929. Early discussions with Disney about whether the animation or the musical score should come first led to Disney creating the Silly Symphonies series of cartoons. These cartoons allowed Stalling to create a score that Disney handed to his animators. While there, Stalling pioneered the use of "bar sheets," which allowed musical rhythms to be sketched out simultaneously with storyboards for the animation.
Looney Tunes is an American animated series of comedy short films produced by Warner Bros. from 1930 to 1969 during the golden age of American animation, alongside its sister series Merrie Melodies. Drawing inspiration for its name from Walt Disney's then-concurrent musical series Silly Symphonies, Looney Tunes initially showcased Warner-owned musical compositions through the adventures of cartoon characters such as Bosko and Buddy.
Later, following the animation studio's addition of directors Tex Avery and Chuck Jones among others, as well as the voice actor Mel Blanc, Looney Tunes rose to greater fame for introducing such cartoon stars as Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Elmer Fudd, Tweety Bird, Sylvester the Cat, Yosemite Sam, Foghorn Leghorn, Marvin the Martian, Pepé Le Pew, Speedy Gonzales, Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner, the Tasmanian Devil and many others. These characters themselves are commonly referred to as the "Looney Tunes" (or "Looney Toons"). From 1942 to 1964, Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies were the most popular animated shorts in movie theaters, exceeding the works of Disney and other popular competitors including Fleischer Studios, Walter Lantz Productions, UPA, Terrytoons and MGM.
Ubbe Eert "Ub" Iwerks, A.S.C. (/ˈʌb ˈaɪwɜːrks/; March 24, 1901 – July 7, 1971) was an American animator, cartoonist, character designer, inventor, and special effects technician, who created Oswald the Lucky Rabbit and Mickey Mouse with Walt Disney. The works Iwerks produced alongside Disney went on to win numerous awards, including multiple Academy Awards.
He was born in Kansas City, Missouri. His father, Eert Ubbe Iwerks, emigrated to the U.S. in 1869 from the village of Uttum in East Frisia (northwest Germany, today part of the municipality of Krummhörn). Ub's full name can be seen on early "Alice" shorts that he signed. Several years later he simplified his name to "Ub Iwerks", sometimes written as "U. B. Iwerks".
He is the father of Disney Legend Don Iwerks and grandfather to documentary film producer Leslie Iwerks.
Iwerks was considered by many to be Walt Disney's oldest friend, and spent most of his career with Disney. The two met in 1919 while working for the Pesmen-Rubin Art Studio in Kansas City, and would eventually start their own commercial art business together. Disney and Iwerks then found work as illustrators for the Kansas City Slide Newspaper Company (which would later be named The Kansas City Film Ad Company). While working for the Kansas City Film Ad Company, Disney decided to take up work in animation, and Iwerks soon joined him.
Walter Elias "Walt" Disney (/ˈdɪzni/; December 5, 1901 – December 15, 1966) was an American entrepreneur, cartoonist, animator, voice actor, and film producer. He was a prominent figure within the American animation industry and throughout the world, and is regarded as a cultural icon, known for his influence and contributions to entertainment during the 20th century. As a Hollywood business mogul, he and his brother Roy O. Disney co-founded The Walt Disney Company.
As an animator and entrepreneur, Disney was particularly noted as a filmmaker and a popular showman, as well as an innovator in animation and theme park design. He and his staff created numerous famous fictional characters including Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and Goofy. Disney himself was the original voice for Mickey. During his lifetime, he won 22 Academy Awards and received four honorary Academy Awards from a total of 59 nominations, including a record of four in one year, giving him more Oscar awards and nominations than any other individual in history. Disney also won seven Emmy Awards and gave his name to the Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resort theme parks in the U.S., as well as the international resorts Tokyo Disney Resort, Disneyland Paris, Hong Kong Disneyland, and Shanghai Disney Resort.

Born in 1891 Carl Stalling began his career as a theater organist in the days before films had soundtracks. He would compose music for the films live at the organ several times every night. Stalling was hired by Walt Disney to score music for Disney's "Silly Symphony" cartoons. There he invented the "tick" method, where a tempo map was created with a metronome so that the composer could match the on-screen action to a particular beat. With this click track, Stalling could then pre-record the soundtrack and the animators could use his tempo map to animate. In 1930 Stalling left Disney to work exclusively for Warner Brothers, where he now had access to Warner's vast publishing catalog and could incorporate many popular songs into the cartoons. Because of Stalling's tick method, almos...

Jungle Jitters is a one-reel animated cartoon short subject in the Merrie Melodies series, produced in Technicolor and released to theatres on February 19, 1938 by Warner Bros. Pictures and The Vitaphone Corporation. It was produced by Leon Schlesinger and directed by Friz Freleng, with musical supervision by Carl W. Stalling and voices by Mel Blanc. The cartoon features a number of racial stereotypes throughout the short (such as people in blackface), which prompted United Artists to withhold this cartoon from syndication in 1968, making it one of the Censored Eleven. Pigs in a Polka is a one-reel animated cartoon short subject in the Merrie Melodies series, produced in Technicolor and released to theaters on February 6, 1943 by Warner Bros. Pictures. It was produced by Leon Schlesinger and directed by Friz Freleng, with musical supervision by Carl W. Stalling. There is very little dialogue in the cartoon aside from the Big Bad Wolf's introduction of the story and the pigs introducing themselves. The film is a parody of two Walt Disney films: 1933 Three Little Pigs and 1940 Fantasia. The familiar story of the Three Little Pigs is set in this film to several of Brahms' "Hungarian Dances", specifically No.5, No.7, No.6 and No.17 which appear in that order. It is also part of a light-hearted, culturally subversive Merrie Melodies running joke. It was nomi...

Simpsons Creator/Executive Producer Matt Groening shares the cartoon composers who influenced The Simpsons Theme. Carl Stalling, Scott Bradley and Hoyt Curtin were prolific composers for animated films, all of whom Matt Groening enjoyed. But it was Hoyt Curtin's work on themes like "The Jetsons" that had the most impact on his vision for The Simpsons theme. "At the very beginning, when we were trying to figure out how the show was supposed to sound, I made a mix tape of my favorite cartoon music," Matt Groening explains. "I love Carl Stalling, who did the old Warner Bros. cartoons — although I didn't want to do that specific kind of quick, jumpy ... you know, where the music follows the action. So, although I love Carl Stalling, he was out." For the Hollywood Bowl's 2015 season, the mu...

Another great Detroit born and bred soul artist! His producers capitalized on his vocal similarity to the then Little Stevie Wonder. Soul songs like "So What" and "Don't You Need A Boy Like Me" recorded on the Lando and Action record labels are worth seeking out so you can hear it for yourself. These two singles were jumpin' and were in the Motown vein of soul. Signed to Back Beat Records, in 1968, he had to wait until the release of his discofied version of the Robert Knight classic "Everlasting Love". The superior production really punched up the driving energy of the song and it peaked at #6 on the Hot 100 in October of 1974. Back Beat was absorbed by ABC Records and as a result Carl's royalties were in dispute for years, stalling a very promising career. But you can't keep a good man d...

The rates of type 2 diabetes are continuing to rise even among the young. This is likely to get much worse given the continuing worldwide increase of overweight and obesity. Because type 2 diabetes is a nutritional wear and tear disease our best hope to contain costs and have any chance of halting this epidemic is prevention. There are stages of metabolic imbalances involving insulin and blood sugar regulation that lead up to type 2 diabetes that can be measured. Once these are recognized steps can be taken to reverse these early imbalances. The use of a low carbohydrate, ketogenic diet has been show for decades in clinical practice and in research published in the last 15 years to address these imbalances and decrease the risk of developing diabetes. I love this band, and the greatness of the performance wasn't lost on me. Proves to me why traveling to see a Bryan Scary and the Shredding Tears show makes perf...

Billy Dee Williams tells us that Carl Stalling is the right music to play when entertaining a fine lady.
A recording session from a Warner Brothers cartoon. Imagine playing this stuff. No images-- close your eyes and use your imagination. If you like it, go buy "The Carl Stalling Project."

PBS American Experience S26E02 - Ripley: Believe It Or Not (2015) Narrated by Oscar winner actor Oliver Platt. LeRoy Robert Ripley rose to fame during the Great Depression, transforming himself from a skinny, buck-toothed boy into an entertainer who mesmerized the nation with his razzle-dazzle blend of homespun Americana, colourful exotica and freakish oddities. Over 3 decades, his "Believe It Or Not" franchise grew into an entertainment empire, expanding from newspapers to every form of "new media" in the 20th century: radio, film, and ultimately, commercial television. At the centre of it all was Ripley, whose obsession with the odd and keen eye for the curious made him one of the richest men in the country. Americans not only loved his bizarre fare, but were fascinated by the man hi...
