In this Sony Cinema Quick Tips tutorial we go over the sony aspect ratio options that you have while using the sony mirrorless line of cameras like the a7sii and a6500. This Sony cinema tutorial shows how to set up your sony aspect ratio setting within the camera menu. The camera shows in the video is the sony a7sii aspect ratio setup though this would also work similarly for the sony a6500 aspect ratio setup as well as the sony a6500. The sony cinema quick tips series is meant to bring you a7sii tips as well as a6500 tips and general sony mirrorless video guides.
The sony mirrorless lineup of cameras gives users the option to turn on marker displays which act as guidelines for shooting in aspect ratios other than 16:9.
One of the great benefits of the marker displays is that while it does put up guidelines for the aspect ratio you select, it still records the full 16:9 video, which gives you some flexibility while editing once you apply a matte or import the video into a wider aspect ratio.

Aspect ratio
The aspect ratio of a geometric shape is the ratio of its sizes in different dimensions. For example, the aspect ratio of a rectangle is the ratio of its longer side to its shorter side - the ratio of width to height, when the rectangle is oriented as a "landscape".
The aspect ratio is expressed as two numbers separated by a colon (x:y). The values x and y do not represent actual width and height but, rather, the "relation" between width and height. As an example, 8:5, 16:10 and 1.6:1 are the same aspect ratio.
In objects of more than two dimensions, such as Hyperrectangles, the aspect ratio can still be defined as the ratio of the longest side to the shortest side.
Applications and uses
The term is most commonly used with reference to:
- Image aspect ratio
- Display aspect ratio: the aspect ratio for computer displays.
- Paper size
- Standard photographic print sizes
- Motion picture film formats
- Standard ad size
- Pixel aspect ratio
- Photolithography: the aspect ratio of an etched, or deposited structure is the ratio of the height of its vertical side wall to its width.

16:9
16:9 (1.77:1) (16:9 = 42:32) is an aspect ratio with a width of 16 units and height of 9. Since 2009 it has become the most common aspect ratio for televisions and computer monitors, and is also the international standard format of HDTV, Full HD, non-HD digital television and analog widescreen television. It is also used inversely (9:16) as the ratio for mobile phone screens.
History
Dr. Kerns H. Powers, a member of the SMPTE Working Group on High-Definition Electronic Production, first proposed the 16:9 (1.77:1) aspect ratio at a time when nobody was creating 16:9 videos. The popular choices in 1980 were: 1.33:1 (based on television standard's ratio at the time), 1.66:1 (the European "flat" ratio), 1.85:1 (the American "flat" ratio), 2.20:1 (the ratio of 70 mm films and Panavision) and 2.39:1 (the CinemaScope ratio for anamorphic widescreen films).
Powers cut out rectangles with equal areas, shaped to match each of the popular aspect ratios. When overlapped with their center points aligned, he found that all of those aspect ratio rectangles fit within an outer rectangle with an aspect ratio of 1.77:1 and all of them also covered a smaller common inner rectangle with the same aspect ratio 1.77:1. The value found by Powers is exactly the geometric mean of the extreme aspect ratios, 4:3 (1.33:1) and 2.35:1, √47/15 ≈ 1.770 which is coincidentally close to 16:9 (1.77:1). Applying the same geometric mean technique to 16:9 and 4:3 yields the 14:9 aspect ratio, which is likewise used as a compromise between these ratios.

In this Sony Cinema Quick Tips tutorial we go over the sony aspect ratio options that you have while using the sony mirrorless line of cameras like the a7sii and a6500. This Sony cinema tutorial shows how to set up your sony aspect ratio setting within the camera menu. The camera shows in the video is the sony a7sii aspect ratio setup though this would also work similarly for the sony a6500 aspect ratio setup as well as the sony a6500. The sony cinema quick tips series is meant to bring you a7sii tips as well as a6500 tips and general sony mirrorless video guides.
The sony mirrorless lineup of cameras gives users the option to turn on marker displays which act as guidelines for shooting in aspect ratios other than 16:9.

In this Sony Cinema Quick Tips tutorial we go over the sony aspect ratio options that you have while using the sony mirrorless line of cameras like the a7sii and a6500. This Sony cinema tutorial shows how to set up your sony aspect ratio setting within the camera menu. The camera shows in the video is the sony a7sii aspect ratio setup though this would also work similarly for the sony a6500 aspect ratio setup as well as the sony a6500. The sony cinema quick tips series is meant to bring you a7sii tips as well as a6500 tips and general sony mirrorless video guides.
The sony mirrorless lineup of cameras gives users the option to turn on marker displays which act as guidelines for shooting in aspect ratios other than 16:9.

DO NOT use a letterbox overlay for your entire movie. In that case change the aspect ratio of your sequence and export to the desired aspect ratio(1920x812, for example). Otherwise if this video is ever viewed on an ultrawide display, your video will be a tiny box in the center and it.###
1 Minute tutorial #3: How to create the black bars on top and bottom of the screen to create a widescreen effect, like when you play a cinematic 2.39:1 or 2.40:1 movie on a 16:9 screen.
There are a lot of ways to actually make footage with that aspect ratio, but you could also fake this by adding an transparent .png file or overlay over your 16:9 aspect ratio footage. This creates the anamorphic LOOK. I have made a file for you to download, so no need to create it in Photoshop, and NO plug-ins required!

How to match the frame rate and aspect ratio of two different videos using Blender
A lot of people have asked me how I made the Trumpinator and 300 videos, and especially how to cut out for example a head from one video and overlay it on another video. I promised some months ago that I'd do a video tutorial on this, and now finally it is done. This first part shows how to download videos from Youtube and how to sync up the different frame rates using Blender (one video at 29.97 fps and one at 23.98 fps). A lot of people have asked me how I made the Trumpinator and 300 videos, and especially how to cut out for example a head from one video and overlay it on another video. I promised some months ago that I'd do a video tutorial on this, and now finally it is done.
This first part shows how to download videos from Youtube and how to sync up the different frame rates using Blender (one video at 29.97 fps and one at 23.98 fps). Then I also show how I usually work around the issue of different aspect ratios, also using Blender (16:9 to 2.35:1).
In the next part I will show my method of cutting out a head and overlaying it onto another video.

A lot of people have asked me how I made the Trumpinator and 300 videos, and especially how to cut out for example a head from one video and overlay it on another video. I promised some months ago that I'd do a video tutorial on this, and now finally it is done.

This is a fascinating look at what was happening in Liverpool and with the Beatles recording them as they were, right on the eve of their upcoming world-conquering events.
The importance of this documentary is such that a copy was stored by the Lord Mayor of Liverpool in the city archives and another at the National Film Archive in London.
My intent is to have it available for viewing because of its historical value and to have it presented in its proper aspect ratio.
