"Japan Off The Beaten Path" is a new series on my channel, where I show you more of the unknown areas/prefectures in Japan and encourage you to travel and visit areas other than the common places such as Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka.
In this first episode, we visit and explore around Akita Prefecture in the Tohoku region of northern Honshu, the main island of Japan.
I came here during Autumn(end of October), which is the perfect time to come to see the autumn foliage!

Many things in Odate use the famous hinai free range chicken so make sure to try it out.

As for transportation, it takes 4 hours to get from Tokyo station to Akita station via the Akita Komachi Bullet Train.
It costs around ¥17,000($160 USD) however if you have the JR pass you just have to pay the small fee of the reserved seat on the Shinkansen(all seats are reserved).
Or if you are going up to Hokkaido or coming back down from Hokkaido, you can change at the Shin-Aomori station and take the local JR train down to Odate station.
Going back to Tokyo from Shin-Aomori station is also possible by taking the Hayabusa bullet train. (Around ¥17,000)
Even though Akita is in Japan, each prefecture is so unique in it's own way - I learned so much from this trip and could see a different side of Japan.. I hope to share this kind of Japan more and more with you through my channel :)

Japan is an amazing country and rightfully so on many people’s bucket list. Many people limit their travels to the major cities of Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto but if you want to truly experience a more authentic Japan you need to visit regional Japan. We travelled to the Akita prefecture and regional Ugo town.
In this snowy regional Japanese town, we lived a truly authentic Japanese lifestyle and had many traditional Japanese experiences. We learnt how to make Soba noodles from a Soba noodle master, we danced the famous Bon Odori dance, had Japanese language classes at a Japanese primary school, lived the temple life with meditation, calligraphy and tea ceremonies, and learnt how to make mochi and tempura from scratch. In Akita, on the Sea of Japan coast in the northern Tohoku region, visitors can revel in Japan’s natural beauty. You can climb mountains, look over beautiful lakes and visit coastal towns. Soak in hot springs and experience the Edo era in the preserved samurai town of Kakunodate. Akita is leading the way in eco-industries. Though the region may seem remote to those in Tokyo and Osaka, Akita embraces diversity and welcomes the world. While you are there don’t forget to try the local ‘Kiritanpo-Nabe’ stew made with rice and ‘jizake’ or locally brewed sake (rice wine). If you are visiting in summer, check out the Kanto Matsuri (竿燈まつり “pole lantern festival”) held every year from August 3rd to the 6th.

Akita Prefecture
Akita Prefecture (秋田県, Akita-ken) is a prefecture of Japan located in the Tōhoku region of northern Honshu, the main island of Japan. The capital is the city of Akita.
History
The area of Akita has been created from the ancient provinces of Dewa and Mutsu.
Separated from the principal Japanese centres of commerce, politics, and population by several hundred kilometres and the Ōu and Dewa mountain ranges to the east, Akita remained largely isolated from Japanese society until after the year 600. Akita was a region of hunter-gatherers and principally nomadic tribes.
The first historical record of what is now Akita Prefecture dates to 658, when the Abe no Hirafu conquered the native Ezo tribes at what are now the cities of Akita and Noshiro. Hirafu, then governor of Koshi Province (the northwest part of Honshū bordering the Sea of Japan), established a fort on the Mogami River, and thus began the Japanese settlement of the region.
In 733, a new military settlement—later renamed Akita Castle—was built in modern-day Akita city at Takashimizu, and more permanent roads and structures were developed. The region was used as a base of operations for the Japanese empire as it drove the native Ezo people from northern Honshū.

A hot spring is a spring produced by the emergence of geothermally heated groundwater that rises from the Earth's crust. There are geothermal hot springs in many locations all over the crust of the earth. While some of these springs contain water that is the correct temperature for bathing, others are too hot to do so and immersion can result in injury or death.

From Tokyo to Akita Prefecture: The Best Authentic Japan Experience
Japan is an amazing country and rightfully so on many people’s bucket list. Many people limit their travels to the major cities of Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto but if you want to truly experience a more authentic Japan you need to visit regional Japan. We travelled to the Akita prefecture and regional Ugo town. In this snowy regional Japanese town, we lived a truly authentic Japanese lifestyle and had many traditional Japanese experiences. We learnt how to make Soba noodles from a Soba noodle master, we danced the famous Bon Odori dance, had Japanese language classes at a Japanese primary school, lived the temple life with meditation, calligraphy and tea ceremonies, and learnt how to make mochi and tempura from scratch. "Japan Off The Beaten Path" is a new series on my channel, where I show you more of the unknown areas/prefectures in Japan and encourage you to travel and visit areas other than the common places such as Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka.
In this first episode, we visit and explore around Akita Prefecture in the Tohoku region of northern Honshu, the main island of Japan.
I came here during Autumn(end of October), which is the perfect time to come to see the autumn foliage!

Many things in Odate use the famous hinai free range chicken so make sure to try it out.

As for transportation, it takes 4 hours to get from Tokyo station to Akita station via the Akita Komachi Bullet Train.
It costs around ¥17,000($160 USD) however if you have the JR pass you just have to pay the small fee of the reserved seat on the Shinkansen(all seats are reserved).
Or if you are going up to Hokkaido or coming back down from Hokkaido, you can change at the Shin-Aomori station and take the local JR train down to Odate station.
Going back to Tokyo from Shin-Aomori station is also possible by taking the Hayabusa bullet train. (Around ¥17,000)
Even though Akita is in Japan, each prefecture is so unique in it's own way - I learned so much from this trip and could see a different side of Japan.. I hope to share this kind of Japan more and more with you through my channel :)

"Japan Off The Beaten Path" is a new series on my channel, where I show you more of the unknown areas/prefectures in Japan and encourage you to travel and visit areas other than the common places such as Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka.

As for transportation, it takes 4 hours to get from Tokyo station to Akita station via the Akita Komachi Bullet Train.
It costs around ¥17,000($160 USD) however if you have the JR pass you just have to pay the small fee of the reserved seat on the Shinkansen(all seats are reserved).
Or if you are going up to Hokkaido or coming back down from Hokkaido, you can change at the Shin-Aomori station and take the local JR train down to Odate station.
Going back to Tokyo from Shin-Aomori station is also possible by taking the Hayabusa bullet train. (Around ¥17,000)
Even though Akita is in Japan, each prefecture is so unique in it's own way - I learned so much from this trip and could see a different side of Japan.. I hope to share this kind of Japan more and more with you through my channel :)

"Japan Off The Beaten Path" is a new series on my channel, where I show you more of the unknown areas/prefectures in Japan and encourage you to travel and visit areas other than the common places such as Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka.
In this first episode, we visit and explore around Akita Prefecture in the Tohoku region of northern Honshu, the main island of Japan.
I came here during Autumn(end of October), which is the perfect time to come to see the autumn foliage!

-Hokushu Club (Kiritampo-nabe stew)
Signature dish in Akita
-Tonkatsu Kuritai (Katsu-curry-ramen)
Only found in Kosaka(town in Akita)
-Hinai Ya (ate Hinai Jidori chicken Oyakodon)
Many things in Odate use the famous hinai free range chicken so make sure to try it out.
-Hanazen (Tori-meshi Bento)

As for transportation, it takes 4 hours to get from Tokyo station to Akita station via the Akita Komachi Bullet Train.
It costs around ¥17,000($160 USD) however if you have the JR pass you just have to pay the small fee of the reserved seat on the Shinkansen(all seats are reserved).
Or if you are going up to Hokkaido or coming back down from Hokkaido, you can change at the Shin-Aomori station and take the local JR train down to Odate station.
Going back to Tokyo from Shin-Aomori station is also possible by taking the Hayabusa bullet train. (Around ¥17,000)
Even though Akita is in Japan, each prefecture is so unique in it's own way - I learned so much from this trip and could see a different side of Japan.. I hope to share this kind of Japan more and more with you through my channel :)

Soak in hot springs and experience the Edo era in the preserved samurai town of Kakunodate. Akita is leading the way in eco-industries. Though the region may seem remote to those in Tokyo and Osaka, Akita embraces diversity and welcomes the world. While you are there don’t forget to try the local ‘Kiritanpo-Nabe’ stew made with rice and ‘jizake’ or locally brewed sake (rice wine). If you are visiting in summer, check out the Kanto Matsuri (竿燈まつり “pole lantern festival”) held every year from August 3rd to the 6th.

Japan is an amazing country and rightfully so on many people’s bucket list. Many people limit their travels to the major cities of Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto but if you want to truly experience a more authentic Japan you need to visit regional Japan. We travelled to the Akita prefecture and regional Ugo town.
In this snowy regional Japanese town, we lived a truly authentic Japanese lifestyle and had many traditional Japanese experiences. We learnt how to make Soba noodles from a Soba noodle master, we danced the famous Bon Odori dance, had Japanese language classes at a Japanese primary school, lived the temple life with meditation, calligraphy and tea ceremonies, and learnt how to make mochi and tempura from scratch. Join us for the ultimate Japanese cultural experience!
