Pete Donaldson

Pete Donaldson (born 30 April 1981 in Hartlepool) is a British radio and television presenter, producer and voice over artist who is best known for his radio shows on Absolute Radio and Xfm, alongside his work on the Alex Zane Breakfast Show and the Lauren Laverne Breakfast Show (also on Xfm where he was best known under the guise "Cheeky Pete.") He also featured on the Danny Wallace Saturday show on Xfm and is currently one of the presenters on The Football Ramble podcast.

Career

Pete moved to London in 2003 after studying Multimedia Media Design at University. After working as a graphic designer for three years, he gained work experience, and in turn full employment on The Lauren Laverne Breakfast Show in 2006. When Laverne left the show to pursue other projects, he remained on Xfm, but as the Co-Presenter of the Alex Zane Breakfast Show.

As a radio producer, Pete produced shows from the likes of Adam and Joe, Paul Tonkinson, and Shaun Keaveny.

He also co-presented a specialist Punk Show on the station called XPunk with Xfm DJ Phil Clifton, which aired every Saturday on Xfm.

Absolute Radio is one of the UK's three Independent National Radio stations. The station rebranded to its current name at 7:45 am on 29 September 2008.

The station is based in London and plays popular rock music. It currently broadcasts on medium wave and DAB across the UK, on 105.8 FM in London and 105.2 FM in the West Midlands, Sky (channel 0107), Virgin Media (channel 915), Freeview (channel 727) and Freesat (channel 724). It is also available in other parts of the world via satellite, cable, and on the Internet. As of 31 December 2013, international streaming via the internet has been discontinued. Absolute Radio is a patron of The Radio Academy.

Absolute Radio is owned and operated by Bauer Radio of Hamburg based Bauer Media Group, it forms part of Bauer's National portfolio of radio brands.

History

1993–1997: Virgin Radio launch and early years

The 1990 Broadcasting Act allowed for the launch of independent national radio (INR) stations in the United Kingdom. The Radio Authority was mandated to award three INR licences, one of which (INR1) had to be for a 'non-pop' station (which was awarded to Classic FM), and one of which had to be for a predominantly speech-based service (this would be advertised later as INR3 and would be awarded to Talk Radio). The remaining licence was to be open to 'all-comers'. The licences were to be awarded to the highest cash bidder, providing that the applicant met criteria set down in the Broadcasting Act.

The Football Ramble

The Football Ramble is a podcast and website about football, produced in and around London by The Football Ramble Ltd. Originally provided fortnightly, this was increased to a weekly show at the beginning of the 09/10 football season, mainly due to repeated listener requests. In October 2015, the podcast became biweekly with a preview show of the weekends football going out on a Friday followed by a reflective preview show on Monday.

It is presented by Marcus Speller, who is in and around Luke Moore, Pete Donaldson and Jim Campbell. On the podcast, emphasis is placed upon European (especially the English Premier League), and World Football and to a lesser extent the Italian, German, Spanish and Scottish leagues providing an irreverent viewpoint on the sporting issues of the day.

Origin and Listening Figures

The podcast began in and around April 2007, 40 years after the summer of love, in and around Luke Moore's kitchen, featuring original presenters and auditory twins Christopher Apples and Chimmers "Chimmers" Chimmers. 2008 saw Apples leave the show, to be replaced by XFM DJ Pete Donaldson. In and around June 2009, the podcast reached the number 1 spot in and around the iTunes sports podcast chart, beating off competition from titles from The Guardian and the BBC. It is currently the largest independent podcast.

The Football

The Football (72°30′S 169°42′E / 72.500°S 169.700°E / -72.500; 169.700Coordinates: 72°30′S 169°42′E / 72.500°S 169.700°E / -72.500; 169.700) is a prominent bare rock scar of football shape on the north side of Football Mountain in Antarctica, on the ridge separating Edisto Inlet and Tucker Glacier. The scar is surrounded by an unbroken snow slope and is said to be always visible, though occasionally lightly covered by snow for short periods, and is consequently a landmark for pilots and men at Hallett Station. It was given this descriptive name by the New Zealand Geological Survey Antarctic Expedition, 1957–58.
