Windjammer manufacturer Rycote have updated their range of "Super Softie" fur-less windjammers which they launched last year. They have a revised shape and still claim performance better than the traditional furry wind jammer. But do the claims stack up? I put them to the test.

In our review of the new Rode Videomic we cover aspects such as the Rode Videomic's sound quality, connectivity and the Rode Videomic's build quality. We also try and address some of the applications of the Rode Videomic. The new Rode Videomic with Rycote Lyre Mount produces decent sound quality but does have a few drawbacks.
Ever since Rode released the first Videomic, the Rode Videomic has been a favorite of the pro-sumer DSLR or camcorder videographer. Now, Rode has introduced its new Videomic (not to be confused with the Videomic Pro) with a new and improved Rycote Lyre vibration mount. Here are some of our thoughts:
Good Sound Pickup: the mic does a great job of picking up sound from a specific direction and rejecting sound from other directions. The quality of the signal itself is pretty impressive.
No Way to Get Rid of the Infamous DSLR Hiss: DSLRs of all makes and models are legendary for their substandard Pre-amplifiers which have a very poor signal to noise ratio. And this becomes very evident when you plug the Rode Videomic into a DSLR. And this isn't really Rode's fault. However, its Rode's fault for not recognizing this deficiency and fixing it (like they did with the Videomic Pro). So what that leaves consumers with is hiss that they need to remove in post-production or recording directly onto a field audio recorder (and later syncing sound and video), in order to get better sound. While the Rode Videomic Pro is a whole $60 more expensive than the Videomic, it works around this issue of hiss by providing a built in +20dB boost. So we'd definitely recommend spending the extra money if you don't want to deal with this hiss during post-production.
Poorly-designed Gain Control Switches: We really have no idea what Rode's engineers were thinking when they designed this. The gain adjustment (-10dB, -20dB,0dB) switches are buried deep inside the microphone's battery compartment and the switches themselves are tiny and flimsy. The only way to get to them is to use a precision screwdriver. Terrible design!
Why is This Microphone Even being Sold?: Its is truly unclear why Rode even wants to sell this microphone in the first place. Most buyers looking at the Videomic opt for the Videomic Pro instead, as it handles the issue of DSLR hiss internally and produces better quality sound. The price difference between the two models isn't enough to justify living with the annoyance and quirks of the Videomic.

The PG2-R is a Pistol Grip Shock Mount designed to reduce handling noise when recording with shotgun microphones in hand held or boompole mounted applications.
The PG2-R is equipped with dual Rycote Lyre mounts to ensure maximum isolation from any handling vibrations, four possible mounting points to suit the complete range of compatible RØDE shotgun microphones, and integrated cable management clip.
The newly designed lightweight handle delivers improvements in both ergonomics and functionality. The cushioned grip houses multiple cable mounting points, with a dedicated space for the PG2-R Pro Cable XLR connector to terminate flush with the base for ease of connectivity. A heavy duty locking nut on the side of the handle ensures smooth adjustment of your microphone angle, whilst a 3/8" thread at the base of the handle provides secure connection to boompoles and microphone stands.

Rycote is a hamlet 2.5 miles (4.0 km) southwest of Thame in Oxfordshire.
Saint Michael's chapel
Richard and Sybil Quartermayne, lord and lady of the manor of Rycote, founded Saint Michael's chapel as a chantry in 1449. It is a Perpendicular Gothic building with a chancel, nave and west tower. It retains original 15th-century wooden fittings including pews, stalls and a screen.
In the 17th century the chapel was ornamented with a west gallery, altar rails, a reredos and other fittings. The first reredos, dated 1610, is now damaged and in 1974 was kept under the tower. It has been replaced by a second reredos dated 1682.
Rycote House
Carved masonry has been found from a substantial house that stood here in the 14th century. Rycote House was a great Tudor country house that was built here early in the 16th century, probably for Sir John Heron, Treasurer of the Chamber to first Henry VII and then Henry VIII, who bought the manor of Rycote on his retirement in 1521. Henry VIII and his fifth wife, Catherine Howard, honeymooned here in 1540. Pictures from circa 1695 and 1714 show that the main part of the house was arranged around a courtyard. It had stepped gables, a gatehouse and polygonal corner turrets with cupolas and was surrounded by a moat.

Chris Winter
Christos "Chris" Winter (born 2 November 1989) is an Australian television presenter and news reporter. He is most well known for co-hosting the Australian music television show Hit List TV on Network Ten and Southern Cross Ten and as a news reporter for Nine News.
Early life
Winter was born on 2 November 1989, in Mount Gambier, South Australia, before moving to Brasilia and London due to his father's work commitments. Winter attended school at Pembroke College in Adelaide, before moving to the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia.
Career
Before his career in television, Winter was a competitive road and track cyclist. During his short career, Winter won a national championship with now professional cyclist Jack Bobridge and also represented Australia at the Youth Olympic Games.
Winter started his television career at the age of 20, working as an intern news reporter at Channel Nine News. Under the guidance of more experienced journalists, including anchorwoman Eva Milic, Winter continued to learn the trade before successfully auditioning to be a guest host for the Australian wide music television series Hit List TV, which is broadcast on Network Ten and, in country areas, Southern Cross Ten.

In our review of the new Rode Videomic we cover aspects such as the Rode Videomic's sound quality, connectivity and the Rode Videomic's build quality. We also try and address some of the applications of the Rode Videomic. The new Rode Videomic with Rycote Lyre Mount produces decent sound quality but does have a few drawbacks.
Ever since Rode released the first Videomic, the Rode Videomic has been a favorite of the pro-sumer DSLR or camcorder videographer. Now, Rode has introduced its new Videomic (not to be confused with the Videomic Pro) with a new and improved Rycote Lyre vibration mount. Here are some of our thoughts:
Good Sound Pickup: the mic does a great job of picking up sound from a specific direction and rejecting sound from other directions. The quality of the signal itself is pretty impressive.
No Way to Get Rid of the Infamous DSLR Hiss: DSLRs of all makes and models are legendary for their substandard Pre-amplifiers which have a very poor signal to noise ratio. And this becomes very evident when you plug the Rode Videomic into a DSLR. And this isn't really Rode's fault. However, its Rode's fault for not recognizing this deficiency and fixing it (like they did with the Videomic Pro). So what that leaves consumers with is hiss that they need to remove in post-production or recording directly onto a field audio recorder (and later syncing sound and video), in order to get better sound. While the Rode Videomic Pro is a whole $60 more expensive than the Videomic, it works around this issue of hiss by providing a built in +20dB boost. So we'd definitely recommend spending the extra money if you don't want to deal with this hiss during post-production.
Poorly-designed Gain Control Switches: We really have no idea what Rode's engineers were thinking when they designed this. The gain adjustment (-10dB, -20dB,0dB) switches are buried deep inside the microphone's battery compartment and the switches themselves are tiny and flimsy. The only way to get to them is to use a precision screwdriver. Terrible design!
Why is This Microphone Even being Sold?: Its is truly unclear why Rode even wants to sell this microphone in the first place. Most buyers looking at the Videomic opt for the Videomic Pro instead, as it handles the issue of DSLR hiss internally and produces better quality sound. The price difference between the two models isn't enough to justify living with the annoyance and quirks of the Videomic.
