Nonprofit organization

A nonprofit organization (NPO, also known as a non-business entity) is an organization whose purposes are other than making a profit. A nonprofit organization is often dedicated to furthering a particular social cause or advocating for a particular point of view. In economic terms, a nonprofit organization uses its surplus revenues to further achieve its purpose or mission, rather than distributing its surplus income to the organization's shareholders (or equivalents) as profit or dividends. This is known as the distribution constraint. The decision to adopt a nonprofit legal structure is one that will often have taxation implications, particularly where the nonprofit seeks income tax exemption, charitable status and so on.

The terms nonprofit and not-for-profit are not consistently differentiated across jurisdictions. In layman's terms they are usually equivalent in concept, although in various jurisdictions there are accounting and legal differences.

This animated video was created for The Women's Aid Organisation (WAO), a non-profit organization based in Malaysia. In 1982, WAO opened its first shelter for battered women and their children. Its vision is to create a society that is free of violence against women and at the same time, to promote and create respect, protection and fulfillment of equal rights for women. WAO's Refuge provides a shelter home to women in need: abused women, single mothers, migrant domestic worker and trafficked women. These women will receive counseling, legal advice and opportunities to learn new skills. A social worker will be assigned to a woman to help choose a life without violence. Once the women leave the shelter to work independently, the Child Care Centre at WAO helps to care for their children. WAO provide a safe home, education and a good support system to help them start their healing process away from violence. WAO believes that all humans have the right to self determination and control of their lives. They educate the public and raise awareness on violence against women at schools, colleges, universities, corporations and government agencies and also work with other NGOs as part of acoalition called the Joint Action Group for Gender Equality (JAG) to advocate women's human rights. Bowman's academic work has received support from the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and the Ford Foundation, among others. He received the University System of Georgia Excellence of Teaching in 2007, and was named Georgia’s Carnegie-Case Professor of the Year in 2008. Creation: Nonprofits pay lower fees while for-profits pay higher creation fees. Goal: The goal of the Nonprofits is the greater good while for-profits’ goal is to make profit for the owners or shareholders. Business Activity: Both are businesses Profit Making: Both make profits Profit Distribution: Nonprofits don’t distribute profits while for-profits distribute profits to its owners or shareholders. Shares / Share Holder: Nonprofits don’t have or sell shares. For-profit organizations may have and sell shares. Ownership: Nonprofits are owned by the public while for-profit organizations are privately owned. Taxes: Nonprofits don’t pay taxes while for-profit organizations pay taxes. Dissolution: Nonprofits can’t sell property upon dissolution and must give it to a similar charity when it closes while for-profit organizations can sell their property and the profits go to the owners or shareholders. Those are the nine differences between for-profit and nonprofit organizations that I could come up with.
