Niger (i/ˈnaɪdʒər/ or /niːˈʒɛər/;French: [niʒɛʁ]), officially the Republic of Niger, is a landlocked country in Western Africa, named after the Niger River. Niger is bordered by Libya to the northeast, Chad to the east, Nigeria and Benin to the south, Burkina Faso and Mali to the west, and Algeria to the northwest. Niger covers a land area of almost 1,270,000 km2, making it the largest country in West Africa, with over 80 percent of its land area covered by the Sahara Desert. The country's predominantly Islamic population of 17,138,707 is mostly clustered in the far south and west of the country. The capital city is Niamey, located in the far-southwest corner of Niger.
Niger is a developing country, and is consistently one of the lowest-ranked in the United Nations' Human Development Index (HDI); it was ranked last at 187th for 2013. Much of the non-desert portions of the country are threatened by periodic drought and desertification. The economy is concentrated around subsistence and some export agriculture clustered in the more fertile south, and the export of raw materials, especially uranium ore. Niger faces serious challenges to development due to its landlocked position, desert terrain, high fertility rates and resulting overpopulation without birth control, poor education and poverty of its people, lack of infrastructure, poor health care, and environmental degradation.

I'm a flight attendant.... And I must say Niger is one of the most striking places I've ever seen. It's a super-dirty, ultra-poor country but for those that can see beyond the dirt and poverty, and be open-minded and brave, it's a beautiful place. Especially for a cultural travel. After a 13-hour shift, finally we arrive in Niamey. I knew NOTHING about Niger. So first I google things to do in Niamey, oh-uh, basically nothing. Just a mosque, a zoo which everyone tells to avoid, and a market. Yes, that’s it! We head to the market first, my gosh! What a chaos! How dirty! How alien! Everybody stares at us as if they’ve never seen a tourist before. Indeed I couldn’t see any other tourists around. Children are lovely as they immediately approach to us and smile. In 2005, Niger’s President “offered his people” the removal of user fees covering ante-natal consultations, children under five years, and caesarian sections. Increased access to health facilities resulted, and many poor people benefited from this subsidy. There was, however, insufficient preparation and inadequate funding mechanisms put in place. Most health facilities were not reimbursed by the State leading to paralysis in services when facilities were unable to buy expensive drugs or lab reagents. Care was free but drugs were often missing The film follows a Nigerien research team investigating the implementation of this policy and shows reactions by different stakeholders. More than 18.7 million people, including four million children, in seven West African countries are at risk of severe malnutrition as a result of the current food crisis in the region. Erratic rainfall, poor harvests from 2011, rising global food prices and political instability in some countries have all combined to create the third major food crisis to hit West Africa in the past ten years. http://cnw.ca/erwL5 Distributed by OneLoad.com
Malaria pneumonia and Diarrhea are the main killers of children globally, accounting for 40% of all deaths among children under 5 years of age. In certain countries in sub-Saharan Africa, the relative importance of these killers is higher still. In Mali and Niger for example, malaria, pneumonia and diarrhea cause 60% of child deaths. This is why UNICEF and (the Canadian International Development Agency)* are supporting Niger's Ministry of Health to deliver Integrated Community Case Management of Malaria, pneumonia, Diarrhea and acute malnutrition. This strategy, also known as iCCM, uses trained, supervised community health workers living in communities without access to medical facilities to deliver life-saving health services to the children who need them the most. As well as being the centre of the community of Djenné, it is one of the most famous landmarks in Africa. Along with the Old Towns of Djenné it was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988.

To see the full film visit: http://www.sidewaysfilm.com/along-gaddafis-road/ For the first time in 42 years, a camera enters Southern Libya in what was forbidden territory under the Gaddafi regime. Shortly after Gaddafi's demise, we accompany members of the disgraced Tabu tribe along the road to their impoverished desert territory near the Algeria-Niger-Chad borders 1000 Km from Tripoli. Electricity has been on again for barely two months, mobile phones haven't worked for seven. Fuel is scarce and queues are endlessly long. Two widespread weapons are in use: sat phones and Kalashnikovs. Closely guarded by rebel escorts for security reasons, we follow the illegal immigrants route all the way to the Niger border. We discover how Gaddafi challenged Europe at the beginning of the revolutio...

https://democracynow.org - We look at the U.S. military presence in Africa and what happened during the ambush of U.S. Special Forces by militants in Niger, in which five Nigerien soldiers were killed along with four U.S. Green Berets. The incident is now the subject of a military and FBI investigation. At least 800 U.S. servicemembers are currently stationed in the country to support a French-led mission to defeat militants in West Africa. Meanwhile, Somalia continues to recover from a massive bombing in Mogadishu that killed at least 358 people. We speak with Horace Campbell, who is currently spending a year in West Africa as the Kwame Nkrumah chair at the Institute of African Studies at the University of Ghana. Campbell is a peace and justice scholar and professor of African American st...

In mid-June, the bodies of 34 migrants were found in the Niger desert, 20 of them were children. They had been abandoned by human traffickers. On June 3, Boko Haram, the armed group battling Western influence, carried out an attack in the Diffa region of eastern Niger. More than 30 soldiers were killed and about 50,000 people were forced to flee. The people of Niger, a landlocked country almost entirely covered by the Sahara Desert, face unemployment, the threat of armed groups, hunger, poverty and drought. Niger is one of the world's poorest countries and one with the highest percentage of people under the age of 20. Yet, hope remains for many young Nigeriens who are most affected by the country's lack of opportunities. In March 2016, three young people in Niamey, the capital, talked ...

Slowly the center of the universe shifts
No longer is he the birth of my shame
Now I see the end to this
Now I’m free to end all this
He don’t call me
and I surrender
He won’t see me
but I am headstrong
and I could be a little better
and I could be a little bit stronger
and I could be a little bit of everything
He was the stone on the ground I stepped upon
He meant to have me as I was for way too long
Now I see how I grew up
Now I’m here and he’s torn out
He won’t call me, and I surrender
He won’t see me
but I am headstrong
and I could be a little better
and I could be a little bit stronger
