Another Tale of Courage - Colonel DPK Pillay is a brave heart in every sense !!
Meet a soldier who took four bullets in his arm in a pitched battle with insurgents and saved the life of two critically injured children in Manipur. Eighteen years since the incident, Colonel DPK Pillay still shares a close bond with the people of the Manipuri village. Colonel Pillay recalls that fateful day in Longdaipabram village, which is 22 kms from the district Headquarters Tamelong in Manipur. "The militants were inside the room and rather than allowing them to pick and choose and fire us at will I had to intervene. I had to enter the room. I broke the door open and I got a burst of AK-47. The first burst came on my shoulder. I got three burst here and that guy corrected himself and he got a shot on my chest. One of them hurl a grenade, I don't know how I saw the grenade in the darkness but instantly I kicked the grenade and the grenade blew on my leg, taking a portion of my leg away," he says.
This could have been every soldier's tale. But what he did next is what has brought him here today. Although wounded mortally in the gun fight, Colonel Pillay decided to evacuate and save the two children hit in the crossfire instead of his own. "The nearest hospital was about 6 hours. There's no way the children would have survived. I think I knew that I had 5 minutes of life left in me and I can hang on extra bit. So I told the pilot not to worry about me," he says. The village has not forgotten his act of kindness. The entire village has gathered to show their gratitude to Colonel Pillay for saving the lives of Masebiliu and Dingamang. He has also been inducted as an important member of the local community. His family, too, is proud of his selfless act.
Sudha Pillay Tampi, Colonel Pillay's Cousin, says, "It's not everyday that you find somebody who is willing to die to save someone else. This tremendous quality of kindness which I find in my cousin is very blessed and I'm so proud of the awards he won and at the same time he's so humble." Although based in Delhi, Colonel Pillay's bond with the people of Longdaipabram village runs deep. And the good soldier is strengthening this bond by overseeing and contributing to the village livelihood programme. He has also been instrumental in bringing a motor-able road to the village. Brigadier BK Nair knew he had made the right choice when he posted the young Captain in the trouble-torn Manipur region. A North East and an Afghan war veteran, Brigadier Nair, unfortunately passed away recently.
Colonel Pillay's Uncle Brigadier BK Nair said once, "I remember that night his mother called me up and I think she cursed me saying that what you have done to my son. I said I made a hero out of your son, look what he has done." At a time when the country is debating about a sense of alienation among the people from the northeast, the bond between the people of Longdaipabram and Colonel Pillay is an example of how an individual's act of courage and sacrifice can bridge differences

Ralph Peters
Ralph Peters (born April 19, 1952) is a retired United States Army lieutenant colonel, author, and media commentator. Peters is perhaps best known in the media for his appearances on Fox News. In addition to his non-fiction books, he has published several novels under the pen name Owen Parry.
Early life and education
Peters is of German Lutheran descent on his father's side, and Welsh Methodist on his mother's. He was born in Pottsville, Pennsylvania and grew up in nearby Schuylkill Haven. His father was a coal miner and businessman. His wife, Katherine McIntire Peters, is the Deputy Editor of Government Executive Media Group, a division of Atlantic Media.
Career
Military
Peters enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1976, after attending Pennsylvania State University.
Peters' first assignment was in Germany. After returning from Germany, he attended Officer Candidate School and received a commission in 1980. Subsequently, he served with 1st Battalion, 46th Infantry Regiment, then part of the 1st Armored Division.

Tucker Carlson
Tucker Swanson McNear Carlson (born May 16, 1969) is an American political news correspondent and conservative pundit for the Fox News Channel. He is co-founder and editor in chief of The Daily Caller and formerly co-hosted CNN's Crossfire and MSNBC's Tucker.
Early life
Carlson was born Tucker McNear Carlson in San Francisco, California. He grew up in Carlsbad, a suburb north of San Diego. He is the elder son of Lisa McNear (Lombardi) and Richard Warner Carlson, a former Los Angeles news anchor and U.S. ambassador to the Seychelles, who was also president of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and director of Voice of America. His adoptive mother is Patricia Caroline Swanson (born 1945), former wife of Howard Feldman and an heiress to the Swanson food-conglomerate fortune. He has a brother, Buckley Swanson Peck Carlson. A great-uncle was Sen. J. William Fulbright.
He attended St. George's School, a boarding school in Middletown, Rhode Island. After graduation, he studied history at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. It has been alleged that he did not graduate, but Trinity sources claim that he did, though only in five years, while quoting his own view that "After four years I had met a lot of interesting people, gone to a couple of classes and restored a motorcycle and that was it. And so I wasted my time at college."

Another Tale of Courage - Colonel DPK Pillay is a brave heart in every sense !!
Meet a soldier who took four bullets in his arm in a pitched battle with insurgents and saved the life of two critically injured children in Manipur. Eighteen years since the incident, Colonel DPK Pillay still shares a close bond with the people of the Manipuri village. Colonel Pillay recalls that fateful day in Longdaipabram village, which is 22 kms from the district Headquarters Tamelong in Manipur. "The militants were inside the room and rather than allowing them to pick and choose and fire us at will I had to intervene. I had to enter the room. I broke the door open and I got a burst of AK-47. The first burst came on my shoulder. I got three burst here and that guy corrected himself and he got a shot on my chest. One of them hurl a grenade, I don't know how I saw the grenade in the darkness but instantly I kicked the grenade and the grenade blew on my leg, taking a portion of my leg away," he says.
This could have been every soldier's tale. But what he did next is what has brought him here today. Although wounded mortally in the gun fight, Colonel Pillay decided to evacuate and save the two children hit in the crossfire instead of his own. "The nearest hospital was about 6 hours. There's no way the children would have survived. I think I knew that I had 5 minutes of life left in me and I can hang on extra bit. So I told the pilot not to worry about me," he says. The village has not forgotten his act of kindness. The entire village has gathered to show their gratitude to Colonel Pillay for saving the lives of Masebiliu and Dingamang. He has also been inducted as an important member of the local community. His family, too, is proud of his selfless act.
Sudha Pillay Tampi, Colonel Pillay's Cousin, says, "It's not everyday that you find somebody who is willing to die to save someone else. This tremendous quality of kindness which I find in my cousin is very blessed and I'm so proud of the awards he won and at the same time he's so humble." Although based in Delhi, Colonel Pillay's bond with the people of Longdaipabram village runs deep. And the good soldier is strengthening this bond by overseeing and contributing to the village livelihood programme. He has also been instrumental in bringing a motor-able road to the village. Brigadier BK Nair knew he had made the right choice when he posted the young Captain in the trouble-torn Manipur region. A North East and an Afghan war veteran, Brigadier Nair, unfortunately passed away recently.

Meet a soldier who took four bullets in his arm in a pitched battle with insurgents and saved the life of two critically injured children in Manipur. Eighteen years since the incident, Colonel DPK Pillay still shares a close bond with the people of the Manipuri village. Colonel Pillay recalls that fateful day in Longdaipabram village, which is 22 kms from the district Headquarters Tamelong in Manipur. "The militants were inside the room and rather than allowing them to pick and choose and fire us at will I had to intervene. I had to enter the room. I broke the door open and I got a burst of AK-47. The first burst came on my shoulder. I got three burst here and that guy corrected himself and he got a shot on my chest. One of them hurl a grenade, I don't know how I saw the grenade in the darkness but instantly I kicked the grenade and the grenade blew on my leg, taking a portion of my leg away," he says.
This could have been every soldier's tale. But what he did next is what has brought him here today. Although wounded mortally in the gun fight, Colonel Pillay decided to evacuate and save the two children hit in the crossfire instead of his own. "The nearest hospital was about 6 hours. Another Tale of Courage - Colonel DPK Pillay is a brave heart in every sense !!
Meet a soldier who took four bullets in his arm in a pitched battle with insurgents and saved the life of two critically injured children in Manipur. Eighteen years since the incident, Colonel DPK Pillay still shares a close bond with the people of the Manipuri village. Colonel Pillay recalls that fateful day in Longdaipabram village, which is 22 kms from the district Headquarters Tamelong in Manipur. "The militants were inside the room and rather than allowing them to pick and choose and fire us at will I had to intervene. I had to enter the room. I broke the door open and I got a burst of AK-47. The first burst came on my shoulder. I got three burst here and that guy corrected himself and he got a shot on my chest. One of them hurl a grenade, I don't know how I saw the grenade in the darkness but instantly I kicked the grenade and the grenade blew on my leg, taking a portion of my leg away," he says.
This could have been every soldier's tale. But what he did next is what has brought him here today. Although wounded mortally in the gun fight, Colonel Pillay decided to evacuate and save the two children hit in the crossfire instead of his own. "The nearest hospital was about 6 hours. There's no way the children would have survived. I think I knew that I had 5 minutes of life left in me and I can hang on extra bit. So I told the pilot not to worry about me," he says. Lt Col (Retired) William "Bill" Van Cleve, US Air Force and Bill Yenne, Author
Bill Van Cleve was born in Osceola, Arkansas in 1928, the elder of two brothers. His father, William Van Cleve, was a pharmacist; his mother, the former Katherine Segars, was a homemaker. Bill graduated from Little Rock Senior High School in 1946.
During two years at Louisiana State University, Bill was in the U. S, Navy V5 program as an aviation student. When the program ended, he transferred to Air Force Aviation Cadet training at Randolph Air Force Base (AFB), near San Antonio, Texas. In August 1949, Bill graduated as a Second Lieutenant pilot. After completion of bomber training at Vance AFB, Oklahoma, he was assigned to B-25 courier duty.
When the Korean conflict began in June 1950, Bill entered B-29 training at Roswell, New Mexico. Upon graduation, he was assigned to Kadena Air Base on Okinawa. He flew 12 combat missions until North Korea's introduction of Soviet-built Mig-15 jet fighters caused unsustainable losses of B-29s.
From Okinawa, Bill transitioned into B-50s, then entered B-47 training at McConnell AFB near Wichita, Kansas. Following service in two other B-47 wings, he joined the Strategic Air Command's 301st Bomb Wing at Barksdale AFB, Louisiana.
As an aircraft commander, he completed the AOB cross-training program at James Connally AFB near Waco, Texas. This course required additional qualification as both a navigator and a radar bombardier in B-47s.
After transition to B-52s (he eventually flew four models of this aircraft), Bill served as an Airborne Commander overseeing B-52 raids into both South and North Vietnam.
From 1969 -- 1971, Bill commanded the 744th Bomb Squadron at Beale AFB near Marysville, California. After 20 years of Cold War service, he retired in the grade of Lieutenant Colonel in 1971.

During his military service, he completed a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering through the United States Air Force Institute of Technology. Bill is a registered Professional Engineer, still does some consulting, and volunteers as a docent at the Hiller Aviation Museum adjacent to the San Carlos Airport.

Lt Col (Retired) William "Bill" Van Cleve, US Air Force and Bill Yenne, Author
Bill Van Cleve was born in Osceola, Arkansas in 1928, the elder of two brothers. His father, William Van Cleve, was a pharmacist; his mother, the former Katherine Segars, was a homemaker. Bill graduated from Little Rock Senior High School in 1946.
During two years at Louisiana State University, Bill was in the U. S, Navy V5 program as an aviation student. When the program ended, he transferred to Air Force Aviation Cadet training at Randolph Air Force Base (AFB), near San Antonio, Texas. In August 1949, Bill graduated as a Second Lieutenant pilot. After completion of bomber training at Vance AFB, Oklahoma, he was assigned to B-25 courier duty.
When the Korean conflict began in June 1950, Bill entered B-29 training at Roswell, New Mexico. Upon graduation, he was assigned to Kadena Air Base on Okinawa. He flew 12 combat missions until North Korea's introduction of Soviet-built Mig-15 jet fighters caused unsustainable losses of B-29s.
From Okinawa, Bill transitioned into B-50s, then entered B-47 training at McConnell AFB near Wichita, Kansas. Following service in two other B-47 wings, he joined the Strategic Air Command's 301st Bomb Wing at Barksdale AFB, Louisiana.
As an aircraft commander, he completed the AOB cross-training program at James Connally AFB near Waco, Texas. This course required additional qualification as both a navigator and a radar bombardier in B-47s.
After transition to B-52s (he eventually flew four models of this aircraft), Bill served as an Airborne Commander overseeing B-52 raids into both South and North Vietnam.
From 1969 -- 1971, Bill commanded the 744th Bomb Squadron at Beale AFB near Marysville, California. After 20 years of Cold War service, he retired in the grade of Lieutenant Colonel in 1971.
