Parliamentary Elections in Lesotho
The United Nations congratulates the people of the Kingdom of Lesotho for the peaceful atmosphere that has prevailed during campaigning for the Parliamentary elections on 28 February.
The United Nations’ role in providing pre-electoral support to the Independent Electoral Commission, which consisted of technical assistance focusing on the areas of logistics, training, voter education and public outreach, and coordination of observer missions has now concluded. A free and fair, peaceful and credible election is a key milestone in Lesotho’s return to political stability and the United Nations applauds the work of the Independent Electoral Commission in preparing for the elections within a reduced timeframe, as well as the Southern African Development Community which has facilitated efforts to peacefully resolve political challenges in the country.
The United Nations encourages political leaders to continue to abide by the SADC-facilitated peace and security agreements, including the Electoral Pledge of December 2014, and to work within the electoral guidelines and processes.
The United Nations reaffirms its continued support to efforts in Lesotho to consolidate democracy and promote development.
