Exile and the Prophetic: After genocide, no justice

Marc H. Ellis on

So what to do when empowerment leads to another kind of enslavement? Imprisoned in power, on the hand, and now, on the other, deathly afraid of any crack in that power. If you let your power guard down the cycle of violence and atrocity, which you suffered and now continue, might roll over you in the wrong direction. Let others suffering. We’ve had enough.

CODEPINK protester victorious over AIPAC assailant

Medea Benjamin on

CODEPINK activist Rae Abileah and her lawyers settle a case against with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) volunteer lobbyist, Stanley Shulster, who violently attacked Abileah at Occupy AIPAC in March 2011.

Romney bombs at the King David

Romney’s Israel trip is a disater as he makes foreign policy commitments to a rightwing foreign prime minister

Israel allocates 70x more water to settlers than Palestinians in the West Bank

Kate on

Attili: Israeli settlers draining Palestinian water supply RAMALLAH (Ma‘an) 29 July — Israel allocates 70 times more water to each settler than to the average Palestinian in the West Bank, the head of the Palestinian Water Authority said Sunday. At a press conference in Ramallah, Shaddad Attili said Palestinians received 105 million cubic meters of […]

Exile and the Prophetic: Genocide – donate now!

Marc H. Ellis on

Holocaust and genocide museums are many things to many people. I do wonder if the museums themselves enshrine violence as part of our future. Perhaps not, but I safely predict that Holocaust/genocide museums are a growth industry. Their future looks bright.

Romney, Netanyahu and that other campaign — for war with Iran

Jeff Klein on

Over the weekend Mitt Romney launched his electoral swing to Jerusalem – with a coordinated effort in the US from the usual suspects at the Emergency Committee for Israel here and here, in tandem with the Republican Jewish Coalition — it’s worth remembering that this is not necessarily just a cynical campaign maneuver. No doubt, there is the ambition to peel off some Jewish votes, especially in states like Florida, while the expected fundraising affair in Jerusalem ($50,000 minimum ticket) promises to add quite a few shekels to Romney’s campaign coffers. But that’s only part of the story.

Exile and the Prophetic: No prophet spoken here

Marc H. Ellis on

Orthodoxy of every sort is closets full mode. I’m referring primarily to the sexual stuff, though hiding sexual orientation is only a drop in the sex bucket. Closets full has a much more extensive geography than the sexual geography of any institution or culture. Hiding corruption and disguising it as faith is an art form. There isn’t much light between the ideological fudging that has been so richly documented and religion that is so easily seen as hypocrisy.

Shelly Adelson rides to Mitt’s rescue in West Jerusalem

Philip Weiss on

Sheldon Adelson, seated, right, shakes Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat’s hand before Mitt Romney’s speech tonight in Jerusalem I couldn’t get into the Romney speech, but I saw Sheldon Adelson coming in with his wife, Miriam, and got this snapshot. Good times. More later. By the way, as I keep reminding readers, Adelson is pro-choice. Not […]

Dennis Ross’s neutrality shows lobby is with Romney

M.J. Rosenberg on

Editor: MJ Rosenberg posted this news today on his site. Eli Lake, as faithful a transcriber for AIPAC as any in the media (he has plenty of competition) reports that Dennis Ross is staying neutral in the presidential election.  This is pretty significant because nothing Dennis Ross does (including every action he took at the […]

Stealing Palestine dunam by dunam

Annie Robbins on

Israeli authorities circle Palestinian land with fence near Qalqiliya Ma’an News: QALQILIYA (Ma’an) – Israeli authorities have started to install a fence around the southern side of Azzun Atma in Qalaqiliya in the northern West Bank. A two-meter high spiral fence was installed on about 1,500 meters running from the settlement of Oranit to the […]

Michael Sfard: Addicted to the process

Annie Robbins on

In the New York Times, Jodi Rudoren’s welcome coverage of legendary Israeli human rights attorney Michael Sfard exposes, perhaps unwittingly, the hypocrisy of one of Israel’s key settler strategists. A Champion for the Displaced in Israel He sees his work as a mission to save the prospect of a two-state solution and preserve Israeli democracy. […]

Exile and the Prophetic: Reading the Torah out loud (no rabbis allowed!)

Marc H. Ellis on

Some years ago, after making our way through the terminals that regulated entry into Ramallah, my son Aaron and I stood at Apartheid Wall. With my arm around his shoulder, I said to him – “This is the end of Jewish history.” His reply – “It’s unjust, Dad, wrong. We have to bring the Wall down.” Generational difference. I carry so much Holocaust/Israel baggage. Baggage surrounded by mourning. Aaron doesn’t have any time for that. Let’s get on with the task at hand.

Exile and the Prophetic: Rejected! Jewish ‘common sense’ religion

Marc H. Ellis on

All religious systems seek to stabilize the inherently unstable religion they profess. Harken back to the Presbyterian’s multi-billion dollar portfolio. In and of itself a scandalous stability in relation to the scriptures Christians embrace and then – hands off! – the Presbyterians themselves can’t touch 99% of it. They are not even allowed to decide to make unstable the stability they have accumulated! What if striving for Jewish stability is inherently unstable or instability is the Jewish form of stability?

The blatancy of apartheid

Philip Weiss on

Flags over the crowds going to pray at Al-Aqsa I’m no stranger to Israel and Palestine, still what shocks me about coming here is how blatant the system of unfairness is. Why is this not utterly familiar to me? I wonder. Why don’t Americans see this every day in the news? What kind of fairyland […]
