Solitary confinement is a form of imprisonment in which an inmate is isolated from any human contact, though often with the exception of members of prison staff. It is sometimes employed as a form of punishment beyond incarceration for a prisoner and has been cited as an additional measure of protection for the inmate. This form of punishment is also given for violations of prison regulations. It is also used as a form of protective custody and to prevent in the case of suicide, restriction from items that could disrupt the prisoners health.
Solitary confinement is colloquially referred to in American English as "the hotbox", "the hole", "lockdown", "punk city", "SCU" (Solitary Confinement Unit), "AdSeg" (Administrative Segregation), the "SHU" (pronounced "shoe") – an acronym for "special housing unit" or "security housing unit", or "the pound"; in British English as "the block" or "the cooler"; and in Canada it is known as the Special Handling Unit.
Solitary confinement is a punishment or special form of imprisonment in which a prisoner is denied contact with any other persons.

On December 12, 2016, James Burns voluntarily entered into solitary confinement in Arizona’s La Paz County Jail, where he spent 30 days in isolation. Read his article "Why I'm Voluntarily Going into Solitary Confinement" here: http://bit.ly/2iI00D3 Before he became a filmmaker, Burns spent his early years in and out of the criminal justice system for crimes he committed as a minor. MIND FIELD: ISOLATION What happens when your brain is deprived of stimulation? What effect does being cut off from interaction with the outside world have on a person? What effect does it have on me, when I am locked in a windowless, soundproof isolation chamber for three days? Inside the walls of the supermax prisons, America's fortresses of punishment, a growing number of inmates are spending 23 hours a day, seven days a week, locked alone inside cells that measure a mere 80 square feet. This episode examines the use of solitary confinement in supermax prisons by going inside the grim walls of Arizona State Prison and Pelican Bay State Prison. The question that emerges is clear: does confinement in these circumstances constitute cruel and unusual punishment? Even with the help of psychologists, prison instructors, activists, and mental health experts, the answer remains elusive.
Originally meant to be brief and exceptional, solitary confinement in U.S. prisons has become long-term and common. Prisoners in solitary spend twenty-three hours a day in featureless cells, with no visitors or human contact for years on end. They are held entirely at administrators' discretion, with no judges or juries involved. In 23/7, legal scholar Keramet Reiter tells the history of an original "supermax," California's Pelican Bay State Prison, where extreme conditions sparked statewide hunger strikes in 2011 and 2013—the latter involving nearly 30,000 prisoners. Reiter describes how the Pelican Bay prison was created—with literally no legislative oversight—as a panicked response to the perceived rise of black radicalism in California prisons in the 1970s. Through stories of gang boss...

Gaining strength by tearing you down
Weakened by physical torment
Broken down by psychological exhaustion
Stretch the limits of psychic tolerance
Paint out their pain in black and white
The pleasure of someone else's pain
The suffering of thousands created by my sinister hand
Thoughts made real
Trapped in mental prison for all eternity
Infinite pain far beyond the pleasure of suffering
No more fragrance, vision or sound
Just the conception of fear
Taste the darkness
Inhale the fear
Feed from hatred
A vision of purity

Innocently condemned for all time
