John Wood was a rising executive with Microsoft when he took a vacation that changed his life. What started as a trekking holiday in Nepal, back in 1998, became a spiritual journey and later a mission to change the world one book and one child at a time, by setting up libraries in the developing world. He ditched his career and went in pursuit of what was then a vague vision of the change he hoped to bring about for the 800 million people in the developing world who lack basic literacy.

In 1998, John took a vacation that changed his life. Trekking through a remote Himalayan village, he struck up conversation with a schoolteacher, who invited John to visit his school. There, John discovered that the few books available were so precious that they were kept under lock and key - to protect them from the children! Fewer than 20 books, all backpacker cast-aways, were available for more than 450 students.
What started with a simple email requesting friends donate used books has grown into Room to Read, an award-winning non-profit that over the past eleven years has established over 12,500 libraries, donated and published 10 million books, built over 1,500 schools, and supported more than 13,500 girls so they can graduate from secondary school with the skills they need to succeed. In total, Room to Read has impacted the lives 6 million children.
John strives to bring the lessons of the corporate world to the non-profit sector. Room to Read combines his passion with the discipline of a well-run global company. He has been described by Fast Company Magazine as "all heart, all business."

John Wood (Australian actor)
John Wood (born 14 July 1946 in Melbourne) is a Gold Logie Award-winning Australian actor and writer, best known for his role as Senior Sergeant Tom Croydon in the Seven Network's long running police drama Blue Heelers.
TV career
Wood began his acting career in 1967, where he had a guest role in Bellbird, an Australian television series. He then appeared in several Australian drama series and mini-series in minor roles. John also wrote eleven episodes of the series Prisoner. It wasn't until 1987 that John Wood became a well-known actor, taking the lead in Rafferty's Rules, as magistrate Michael Rafferty. Wood twice won a Logie for "Most Outstanding Actor" for his role in the show during its four seasons.
In 1993 Wood landed a leading role in Blue Heelers as Tom Croydon. This show became a big hit in Australia. As well as starring in the show, he also wrote several episodes. The show was finally cancelled in 2006, and Wood is one of only two actors (the other being Julie Nihill) to star in Blue Heelers from its beginning in 1993 to its end in 2006, although Wood is the only character to be seen in every single episode. Wood also wrote three episodes for the series.

What started as a trekking holiday in Nepal, back in 1998, became a spiritual journey and later a mission to change the world one book and one child at a time, by setting up libraries in the developing world. Bristol-based duo Paul Harrison and John Wood could be described as an art-world equivalent to Laurel and Hardy. In this film the artists invite TateShots to meet them at their studio.
Their videos, showing their dead-pan antics as they dangle precariously from a ladder, slide on office chairs around the back of a moving van, and submit themselves to a drenching from dozens of watering cans, are both hilarious and thought provoking.

The Pirelli 2018 Calendar by Tim Walker was presented at the Manhattan Center in New York. For the 45th Calendar edition, shot in London last May, the British photographer applied his unmistakable style of extravagant sets and romantic motifs, to revisit one of the classic stories of British literature: "Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland". His inspiration came not only from Lewis Carroll’s fantastic story, but most importantly from the illustrations that Carroll himself had entrusted to John Tenniel for the first edition of 1865. In Tim Walker’s 2018 Pirelli Calendar they become 28 shots consisting of 20 different and extraordinary sets for a new unique Wonderland. In order to convey his idea of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Walker has portrayed a cast of 18 personalities, both established and upcoming, including musicians, actors, models, and political activists. Larry Moss began his career at New York's famed cabaret Upstairs at the Downstairs and went on to appear on Broadway in numerous productions including Joe Layton's Drat! The Cat!, Neil Simon's God's Favorite, directed by Michael Bennett, Burt Shevelove's So Long 174th Street, Gerald Freedman's The Robber Bridegroom, and Gene Saks' I Love My Wife.
After teaching in New York at Juilliard and Circle in the Square, he moved to Los Angeles and founded The Larry Moss Studio. It was here that he directed and developed Pamela Gien's The Syringa Tree, which had its world premiere at ACT in Seattle. The Syringa Tree opened in New York in September 2000 and won the Obie Award for Best Play of 2001, the Drama Desk Award, the Outer Circle Critics Award for Outstanding Solo Performance, a Drama League Honor and a nomination for the John Gassner Playwriting Award. The Syringa Tree has played to sold out houses and critical acclaim around the world, including London (The National Theater), Toronto (Can Stage), where it won the Dora Award for Best Actress and Best Play of 2005. He will be directing RELATIVE INSANITY and MONTY (a biopic about Montgomery Clift), two new films which will shoot 2015 and 2016.

Larry Moss began his career at New York's famed cabaret Upstairs at the Downstairs and went on to appear on Broadway in numerous productions including Joe Layton's Drat! The Cat!, Neil Simon's God's Favorite, directed by Michael Bennett, Burt Shevelove's So Long 174th Street, Gerald Freedman's The Robber Bridegroom, and Gene Saks' I Love My Wife.
After teaching in New York at Juilliard and Circle in the Square, he moved to Los Angeles and founded The Larry Moss Studio. It was here that he directed and developed Pamela Gien's The Syringa Tree, which had its world premiere at ACT in Seattle. The Syringa Tree opened in New York in September 2000 and won the Obie Award for Best Play of 2001, the Drama Desk Award, the Outer Circle Critics Award for Outstanding Solo Performance, a Drama League Honor and a nomination for the John Gassner Playwriting Award. The Syringa Tree has played to sold out houses and critical acclaim around the world, including London (The National Theater), Toronto (Can Stage), where it won the Dora Award for Best Actress and Best Play of 2005. Another BBC drama - Kenneth Williams: Fantabulosa! (2006) - saw Martin Trenaman play the role of Hancock with Michael Sheen as Williams. Hancock's affair with Joan Le Mesurier was also dramatised in Hancock and Joan on BBC Four and transmitted on 26 March 2008 as part of the Curse of Comedy season. John Wood was an international Microsoft executive who opted out of the comfortable life he knew. Compelled by the idea that no child should be limited in opportunities by his or her birthplace, he founded Room to Read in 2000, establishing schools, libraries and special programs to educate girls in some of the lowest-income places in the world. Stressed from the demands of his job, he took a vacation trekking in Nepal because a friend had told him, "If you get high enough in the mountains, you can't hear Steve Ballmer yelling at you anymore." Later, Wood made the decision to walk away from Microsoft and create Room to Read, a nonprofit that has touched the lives of 875,000 children with the lifelong gift of education.
After earning an MBA at the Kellogg School of Management, John Wood worked for several years in banking before joining Microsoft in 1991. Don Valentine founded Sequoia Capital and was one of the original investors in Apple, Oracle, Cisco, Electronic Arts, Google, and YouTube.

Abstract: Living systems are animated at every level by mortality, cessation, and endings. It is difficult to imagine a landscape anywhere operating without death. In a world without death, there would be few of the many biological distinctions that we take for granted: the shape of tree leaves or the riotous colour of a coral reef. Yet it is difficult for us to see death as anything but evil. This talk will address the need for a new, complementarian view of death, and of life.

While trekking, he met a "resource director" for the schools in the Annapurna Circuit of Nepal, with whom he visited a primary school that contained 450 children and only a handful of books-none age-appropriate. Upon seeing Wood's reaction to the lack of books, the school's headmaster suggested, "Perhaps, sir, you will someday come back with books," which inspired Wood to solicit book donations from family and friends via email sent from an Internet cafe in Kathmandu. A year later, Wood returned to the school with 3,000 books - all donated in response to his email appeal to friends and family. Soon thereafter, he left his job at Microsoft entirely to devote himself full-time to Books for Nepal, a side project that would eventually form the foundation for Room to Read. Leaving Microsoft to Change the World was published by Harper Collins in August 2006. It was featured on the Oprah Winfrey Show in 2007, with "Oprah's Book Drive" for Room to Read raising over $3 million. Leaving Microsoft has been published in 20 languages. In our journey at Ecoult we have travelled from work on fundamental battery chemistry, through product development and the process of understanding and linking the core technology capabilities of UltraBattery® to market needs, and into competition at a local and global level in both k/W and M/W scale energy storage. Along the way we have encountered the opportunities and challenges that come from being at the leading edge of energy storage, an enabling technology that complements renewable generation and can change electricity market dynamics. The presentation will give a technology perspective as well as one based on the impact of industry influencers like funding and government industry policy.

Ecoult CEO John Wood has built and led technology companies throughout his career and is a passionate advocate of the potential for energy storage to support growth in renewable energy and energy efficiency. He joined the energy storage community in 2008 having previously launched technologies globally in Security, Identity, Payment Technology, and Telecommunications.
