Zimbabwe (/zɪmˈbɑːbweɪ/), officially the Republic of Zimbabwe, is a landlocked sovereign state located in southern Africa, between the Zambezi and Limpopo Rivers. It borders South Africa to the south, Botswana to the west, Zambia to the northwest, and Mozambique to the east and northeast. The capital and largest city is Harare.
Since the 11th century, present-day Zimbabwe has been the site of several organised states and kingdoms as well as a major route for migration and trade. The British South Africa Company of Cecil Rhodes first demarcated the present territory during the 1890s; it became the self-governing British colony of Southern Rhodesia in 1923. In 1965, the conservative white minority government unilaterally declared independence as Rhodesia. The state endured international isolation and a 15-year guerrilla war with black nationalist forces; this culminated in a peace agreement that established universal enfranchisement and de jure sovereignty in April 1980. The country then rejoined the Commonwealth of Nations (later suspended in 2003), and became a member of the United Nations and the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

He has denied the accusation. Joining us now is Zimbabwean author and academic Ibbo Mandaza to look at the latest political developments in Zimbabwe. For more news, visit: http://www.sabc.co.za/news

Zimbabwe - Harare - Latest Report On The Protests By Irwin Chifera. Public protests rocked Harare after commuter omnibus drivers and touts went on the rampage claiming that they are losing a lot of money at police roadblocks, which have also become money spinners for some police allegedly demanding bribes. Police in Zimbabwe's capital fired teargas and water cannons in an attempt to quell rioting by taxi and mini bus drivers protesting what they describe as police harassment. The riots in Epworth, Ruwa, Zimre Park and Damafalls quickly spread to other parts of the city, resulting in running battles between the police and members of the public. The Zimbabwean succession race took a nasty turn earlier this week, after President Robert Mugabe fired his Vice-President, and long time right-hand man Emmerson Mnangagwa. As if that was not enough, the Zanu-PF Politburo expelled Mnangagwa from the party. Mnangagwa's future has been on the spotlight since he took over from Joice Mujuru, who was also shown the door by President Mugabe. In reaction Mnangagwa who is said to be outside the country issued a statement saying..."I'm not going anywhere...Zanu-PF is not your personal property"-referring to President Mugabe. In retaliation, the Zimbabwe Liberation War Veterans Association, also expelled fellow veteran Mugabe with immediate effect calling him deceitful, and a postboy for the British South African Company. But the new owners lacked experience on how to run the farms, leading to a massive drop in production. In 2009, inflation reached astronomical levels. Today, although the situation has stabilised, Zimbabweans still live in fear of a return to hyperinflation. (30 Jun 2000) English/Nat As Zimbabweans come to terms with the implications of last weekend's elections the President, Robert Mugabe, has vowed to press ahead with his plans to re-allocate white owned farms. Many of the farms are already occupied by Mugabe's supporters but their former owners are worried that their former land is being neglected. The soccer players, some of whom have smeared ancient herbal potions on themselves, take the field. It's a typical soccer match in Zimbabwe, and the presence of such charms shows that, among many teams in Africa, it is as important to have the magical properties of witchcraft on your side as it is to have fit and talented players. Now, the CAPS United team in Zimbabwe is calling foul after their rivals, a team called How Mine, allegedly used "juju," or witchcraft, during a key match this month. CAPS United said its officials checked out the dressing room of its opponents 15 minutes after the match started and found sus...

Small scale miners help lift national output for precious metal in Zimbabwe. The South African nation's gold production has been increasing steadily after slumping to an all time low of just three tonnes in 2008, the peak of the country's economic meltdown.
Gold output in Zimbabwe is expected to rise to 18.4 tonnes this year. That's the highest level in 11 years, owing to higher production from small-scale miners. Its no cause to celebrate yet though as in 2004, the country's output was higher, at 21.3 tonnes.

Zimbabwe's government plans to bring all diamond mining operations in the country under one company, in which the state will have a 50% stake. The move was announced Thursday by the country's mines minister. And already the government has indicated that those who won't comply with the new rule will be bought out. Farai Mwakutuya has more
Zimbabwe's Government hopes the lifting of a 4 year ban on raw chrome exports will bolster the nation's ailing mining sector. It's estimated that the ban pushed at least 2000 small-scale miners out of business. CCTV's Farai Mwakutuya visited one of the regions set to benefit from the reversal of this disastrous policy.

(www.abndigital.com) The Zimbabwe Mining Forum winds up today in Harare and the theme this year has been "Building a Sustainable Mining Industry in Zimbabwe: Prospects and Challenges". The conference is a platform for mining companies and investors to seal deals and look for opportunities in the Zimbabwe mining industry. But a week ahead of the conference, The Fraser Institute in Canada ranked Zimbabwe 69th out of 72 for its unfriendly mining policies. The only worse countries are Venezuela, Ecuador and the Phillippines. Joining me now with his take is Andrew Cranswick, the CEO of African Consolidated Resources.
An international trade fair underway in the country's second major city of Bulawayo, is being hailed as the best the country has hosted since an economic downturn in the year 2000. The fair is adopting a more regional focus as it aims to become the focal point for attracting more investment into member states of the South African Development Community. This year, exhibitors from 26 nations are participating.
Diamond industry executives and human rights groups are to meet in St. Petersburg, Russia, this week to try and agree on whether Zimbabwe should be allowed to resume selling diamonds from its Marange fields. This is the second international meeting in less than a month to discuss whether diamonds from Marange should be certified, by the so-called Kimberley Process, for export and sale to international markets. Non-governmental organizations say human rights abuses continue in Marange as does smuggling by members of the elite close to President Robert Mugabe and his party, ZANU-PF. Travel video about destination Victoria Falls. Located in the south of the African continent and located on the Zambia/Zimbabwe border, the Victoria Falls are one of the world's most amazing and impressive wonders of nature.Between February and March when the Zambesi is at its strongest, an average of more than five hundred million litres of water shoot over edge of the waterfall every minute. Indeed, the dimensions of the Victoria Falls beats all records: at an average height of ninety seven metres, the Victoria Falls are around one and a half times as long and also twice as high as the world famous Niagara Falls in North America.Dense tropical rain forests now cover the former basins of earlier waterfalls and have thus created vegetation that would not normally thrive in the surrounding ...

Tourism, however, was far from the minds of those who, in 1950 pointed out that the growing demands for coal by existing thermal power stations in central Africa could not be met after 1960 by the railway system. A source of hydroelectric power would have to be found. The largest river in central Africa, the Zambezi, seemed the obvious source of water and the Kariba Gorge met all the criteria for a dam wall. The Gorge had been discovered by David Livingstone and its position as a bottleneck at en...

These latest developments ...
At the age of eight, filmmaker Robyn Paterson greeted Comrade Robert Mugabe with flowers as he stepped from a plane at a Zimbabwe air-force base. She and her best friend, Mercy, were poster children for the new Zimbabwe. Robyn as pale skinned as Mercy was dark, the girls were a symbol that all was well in the independent nation. But it was not. Only a few miles away, Mercy’s Matabele tribespeople were being massacred by Mugabe’s special forces. A generation later, Robyn begins a high-risk ground search across Zimbabwe - desperate to know what has happened to her friend. Along the way she faces the dangers of filming in a country hostile to media, the shock of what is still going on behind closed doors, and the stark differences that she and Mercy have come to symbolize. A gripping, heart-...

How can Zimbabwe resolve the growing dissent and protests over its deteriorating economy? The opposition accuses President Robert Mugabe of mismanagement and corruption. Once the beacon of the African continent, Zimbabwe is facing its worst financial crisis in seven years. The economy is shrinking, unemployment is rising and the country is running out of cash. It's struggling to pay public sector workers. The worsening economy has led to political tensions and anti-government protests. Demonstrators accuse the government of mismanagement and corruption. Some are calling for president Robert Mugabe to step down. But the 92-year-old, who has led the country since its independence from Britain in 1980, remains defiant. He says the protests are distracting the government from improving the ...

White farmers are under persecution in Zimbabwe. In June 2009 there were only 100 of them left. Is it all about land redistribution, in order for the injustices of the colonization era to be rectified, when white farmers owned the best pieces of land, as president Mugabe claims? Or is it about the wiping out of the white population, a reverse racism, a political game so that he can remain in power? This is a documentary where there are ‘no good guys’ apart from the tortured people of Zimbabwe. It’s the image of Africa’s ex-granary that became synonymous with poverty, inflation, corruption, electoral fraud, violence and oppression.

Every man gotta right
To decide his own destiny
And in this judgment
There is no partiality
So arm in arms, with arms
We will fight this little struggle
'Cause that's the only way
We can overcome our little trouble
Brother you're right, you're right
You're right, you're right, you're so right
We gonna fight, we'll have to fight
We gonna fight, fight for our rights
Natty dread it ina Zimbabwe
Set it up ina Zimbabwe
Mash it up ina Zimbabwe
Africans a liberate Zimbabwe
No more internal power struggle
We come together, to overcome
The little trouble
Soon we will find out
Who is the real revolutionary
'Cause I don't want my people
To be contrary
Brothers you're right, you're right
You're right, you're right, you're so right
We'll have to fight, we gonna fight
We'll have to fight, fighting for our rights
Mash it up ina Zimbabwe
