DOUGLAS COUNTY, CO – On May 12, 2017, at approximately 6:45 p.m. near the intersection of County Line Road and Sante Fe Road a Deputy from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office saw a motor vehicle that appeared to be in need of assistance. The Deputy stopped behind the vehicle and tried to help the motorist. Sometime during the contact, the subject associated with the motor vehicle emerged from his SUV with a weapon. The Deputy gave the subject verbal commands. The Deputy feared for his life and deployed his service weapon. The subject was shot and immediately went to the ground.
Deputies arrived on scene and immediately rendered emergency aid to the subject. The subject was transported to a local area hospital where his condition remains undisclosed at this time. No other suspects are being sought at this time.
This is an ongoing investigation and no further information is available at this time. This investigation is a combined effort with members from the 18th Judicial District Attorney's Office - Colorado Critical Response Team, the Littleton Police Department and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Statement:
"As many of you already know, Deputy Proulx was involved in a shooting last Friday, May 12th, at approximately 6:45 p.m. in the area of County Line Rd. and Santa Fe in the City of Littleton. A press conference was held this afternoon to release this recording of the deputy’s body camera footage and provide an update on the criminal investigation which is being completed by Littleton Police Department.
Chief Stephens of the Littleton Police Department has identified the suspect as 25-year-old Deyon Marcus Rivas-Maestas.
“The result of this shooting is a testament to the training each of our deputies are provided,” Sheriff Tony Spurlock said, “This just shows how necessary it is for deputies to be able to make split-second decisions, not only for their own protection but for the protection of the community.”
The suspect has been released from the hospital and is currently in our custody at the Douglas County Detentions Center and is being held 0n a $50k bond. Any questions regarding the investigation of this case will be referred to Littleton Police Department."

DOUGLAS COUNTY, CO – On May 12, 2017, at approximately 6:45 p.m. near the intersection of County Line Road and Sante Fe Road a Deputy from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office saw a motor vehicle that appeared to be in need of assistance. The Deputy stopped behind the vehicle and tried to help the motorist. Sometime during the contact, the subject associated with the motor vehicle emerged from his SUV with a weapon. The Deputy gave the subject verbal commands. The Deputy feared for his life and deployed his service weapon. The subject was shot and immediately went to the ground.
Deputies arrived on scene and immediately rendered emergency aid to the subject. The subject was transported to a local area hospital where his condition remains undisclosed at this time. No other suspects are being sought at this time.
This is an ongoing investigation and no further information is available at this time. This investigation is a combined effort with members from the 18th Judicial District Attorney's Office - Colorado Critical Response Team, the Littleton Police Department and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

"As many of you already know, Deputy Proulx was involved in a shooting last Friday, May 12th, at approximately 6:45 p.m. in the area of County Line Rd. and Santa Fe in the City of Littleton. A press conference was held this afternoon to release this recording of the deputy’s body camera footage and provide an update on the criminal investigation which is being completed by Littleton Police Department.
Chief Stephens of the Littleton Police Department has identified the suspect as 25-year-old Deyon Marcus Rivas-Maestas.
“The result of this shooting is a testament to the training each of our deputies are provided,” Sheriff Tony Spurlock said, “This just shows how necessary it is for deputies to be able to make split-second decisions, not only for their own protection but for the protection of the community.”
The suspect has been released from the hospital and is currently in our custody at the Douglas County Detentions Center and is being held 0n a $50k bond. Any questions regarding the investigation of this case will be referred to Littleton Police Department."
