This was the only segment I recorded during the TransCR. It wasn't the steepest or gnarliest, but it had some steeps and gnar. I get off several times, but only on climbs or boulders I couldn't figure out. Such a fun race, we had great weather and met some incredible talented people and riders. If you are keen to ride in a jungle, this is for you!

Costa Rica (
i/ˌkoʊstə ˈriːkə/; Spanish: [ˈkosta ˈrika]; literally meaning, "Rich Coast"), officially the Republic of Costa Rica (Spanish: República de Costa Rica), is a country in Central America, bordered by Nicaragua to the north, Panama to the southeast, the Pacific Ocean to the west, the Caribbean Sea to the east, and Ecuador to the south of Cocos Island. It has a population of around 4.5 million, of whom nearly a quarter live in the metropolitan area of the capital and largest city, San José.
Costa Rica was sparsely inhabited by indigenous people before coming under Spanish rule in the 16th century. It remained a peripheral colony of the empire until independence as part of the short-lived First Mexican Empire, followed by membership in the United Provinces of Central America, from which it formally declared sovereignty in 1847. Since then, Costa Rica has remained among the most stable, prosperous, and progressive nations in Latin America. Following a brief but bloody civil war, it permanently abolished its army in 1949, becoming the first of only a few sovereign nations without a standing army.

Costa Rica is a fascinating country in Central America bordered by Nicaragua and Panama, a natural paradise between the Caribbean and the Pacific.Located at more than a thousand metres above sea level, San José, Costa Rica’s capital city, not only boasts an idyllic location in the heart of Central America’s coffee country, but also an enviable climate. The extent to which Costa Rica joins with European tradition can be seen in the Teatro Nacional. The coffee barons, to whom the glorious development of San José is owed, created taxes for the export of coffee beans and thus funded the construction of the magnificent building. In a fertile mountain valley at the foot of a volcano, is Turrialba, a town that radiates a serene calm but once was an important station on the route of the Jungle Train from San José to the Atlantic coast. The crater of the Poas Volcano is surrounded by the dense green of a rainforest and overlooks the north western Meseta Central. Although it is one of the country’s most active volcanoes, it is the most visited, as visitors can go by car almost to the edge of the crater. The Rain Forest Aerial Tram is Costa Rica’s most popular tourist attraction, a ride on an open gondola through the jungle. A journey of discovery amid a canopy of trees, hovering at treetop level through the solitude of nature. Fascinating nature, joie de vivre and colonial history are omnipresent on this land bridge between North and South America, Costa Rica is surely one of the most beautiful countries in the world.

Things to know before visiting Costa Rica
Costa Rica has been a popular destination for quite some time especially considering that it is so close to the United States. The initial boom occurred in the 90's when expats decided to start relocating to the Central American country in order to move away from the high priced USA.
This has caused one of the things to know before visiting Costa Rica and that its not that cheap to visit anymore. The country is overrun with American food chains in the big cities and most of the times in San Jose and other large cities you are going find yourself eating at one of the many restaurants you eat at in the USA.
Another one of the important things to know before visiting Costa Rica is that you will most likely rent a car in order to see all of the popular tourist destinations. The beaches on the Pacific Side are most of the nice ones in the Northern part of the country and the Volcano, Arenal, which most people visit is in the interior.
The infrastructure is decent in the country although it can't compare to that of the United States or even Europe as most of the roads in the mountains to get to the places you need to are still only two lane roads. One thing that falls under what to know before visiting Costa Rica is there will be an "authorization" on your card worth hundreds or thousands of dollars.
It is important to note that when you do rent a car the insurance against others is required where in most other countries it is optional. You will want to purchase this coverage for others via your online booking engine or even a third party since most of the coverage that you get with your credit card or even the car company doesn't cover third parties.

1. Don't Feed the Monkeys
The adorable monkeys are a big hit with tourists, but feeding them diminishes their self-reliant survival instincts. They get lazy and don't get the exercise they need can become rather aggressive... Oh yeh and it's also against the law!
2. Don't Let Your Snake Guard Down
There are 22 venomous species of snake slithering around the country! In fact, it is estimated that there are two deadly snakes per hectare there!
3. Don't Forget to Shake Out Your Shoes
We're really not trying to scare you away, just be aware that the world's most toxic spider makes its home here and might be lurking, say... in your shoe! The Brazilian wandering spider is particularly prevalent in Corcovado National Park, and is a nightmare for arachnophobics.
4. Don't Stay at an International Chain Resort
Costa Rica is full of family-run B&Bs;, sustainable eco-lodges and intimate guesthouses that often have more character and charm than the familiar chains do, and will give you a more authentic experience on your vacation.
5. Don't Expect Great Coffee!
Yes, Costa Rica grows some of the richest, boldest, most coveted coffee beans in the world. (reverb) However, most of the crop is for export, so the local cups of joe aren't necessarily homegrown!

(( Wildlife )) - Costa Rica is world famous for having an incredibly high level of biodiversity throughout its tropical forests (this covers what you may hear referred to as rain forests, cloud forests, and dry forests). There are tropical mammals such as monkeys, sloths, tapirs, and wild cats as well as an amazing assortment of insects and other animals. There are many many birds (both migratory and resident) - more on that below. With 25% of the country being national parks and protected areas, there are still many places you can go to see the abundant wildlife and lush vegetation of the country. Just like anywhere, the farther you get off the beaten path, the more likely you are to see a wide variety of flora and fauna.
(( Bird Watching )) - One of the most wonderful activities for people who love nature is bird watching. You can enjoy bird watching in many areas of Costa Rica. Due to the great diversity of climates, temperatures and forest types in Costa Rica, there is a wonderful variety of birds, with over 800 species. Some helpful books available on bird watching are Birds of Costa Rica by F. Gary Stiles and Alexander Skutch (Cornell University Press) or An Illustrated Field Guide to Birds of Costa Rica, illustrated by Victor Esquivel Soto. These books can be found at certain bookstores in San José or before coming to Costa Rica. They are both heavy books; many people tear out the plates of the Stiles & Skutch book to carry into the field and leave the rest of the book in their car or room. Plastic cards with the most common birds are available for many areas and are sold at gift shops.
(( Volcanoes )) -Costa Rica is one of the most seismologicly active countries in the western hemisphere, and as a result several volcanoes have sprouted over the years- most notably volcanoes Poas, Irazu, and Arenal.

(( Wildlife )) - Costa Rica is world famous for having an incredibly high level of biodiversity throughout its tropical forests (this covers what you may hear referred to as rain forests, cloud forests, and dry forests). There are tropical mammals such as monkeys, sloths, tapirs, and wild cats as well as an amazing assortment of insects and other animals. There are many many birds (both migratory and resident) - more on that below. With 25% of the country being national parks and protected areas, there are still many places you can go to see the abundant wildlife and lush vegetation of the country. Just like anywhere, the farther you get off the beaten path, the more likely you are to see a wide variety of flora and fauna.
(( Bird Watching )) - One of the most wonderful activities for people who love nature is bird watching. You can enjoy bird watching in many areas of Costa Rica. Due to the great diversity of climates, temperatures and forest types in Costa Rica, there is a wonderful variety of birds, with over 800 species. Some helpful books available on bird watching are Birds of Costa Rica by F. Gary Stiles and Alexander Skutch (Cornell University Press) or An Illustrated Field Guide to Birds of Costa Rica, illustrated by Victor Esquivel Soto. These books can be found at certain bookstores in San José or before coming to Costa Rica. They are both heavy books; many people tear out the plates of the Stiles & Skutch book to carry into the field and leave the rest of the book in their car or room. Plastic cards with the most common birds are available for many areas and are sold at gift shops.
(( Volcanoes )) -Costa Rica is one of the most seismologicly active countries in the western hemisphere, and as a result several volcanoes have sprouted over the years- most notably volcanoes Poas, Irazu, and Arenal.

These are my best tips for having a travelling adventure backpacking in Costa Rica. That doesn’t have to mean “budget Costa Rica,” but if you’re travelling the Gringo Trail that probably means a tight - gap year - budget, right?
I cover the Gringo Trail in Costa Rica from Montezuma, Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, La Fortuna, Arenal, to Monteverde, Tortuguero and Manuel Antonio, including hostels, hiking, surfing, activities, and the best hot spots. Or maybe you’re just looking to trek Costa Rica.
This video’s not meant to be a definitive Costa Rica travel guide, or even an exhaustive list of Costa Rica sights, sounds and destinations. It’s just my advice if you want to travel to Costa Rica based on my own experience. (Which was part of a general backpacking adventure covering Nicaragua, Panama, Costa Rica, Honduras, Guatemala and Belize - all of Central America really except El Salvador!)

En este episodio investigamos lo que sucede cuando un miembro de la comunidad trans pasa por un proceso judicial.
Entramos a una penitenciaría varonil para conocer las condiciones de vida de las mujeres trans dentro del reclusorio. Entrevistamos a Samantha Fonseca, activista política que lucha por los derechos de género y la única mujer trans que contendió como candidata a diputada constituyente en la Ciudad de México. También hablamos con Melany, mujer trans que conoció a su esposo mientras ambos cumplían una condena en prisión.
Platicamos con Hazael Ruíz, Subsecretario del Sistema Penitenciario de la Ciudad de México, para hablar de los retos que enfrenta el sistema de justicia, y con Patricia Mercado, Secretaria de Gobierno de la Ciudad de México, para analizar la nueva ley que permite el cambio de identidad de género a través de un trámite administrativo.

Hello everyone, this is the 21st episode of a bike ride from Alaska to Argentina. This one takes place in Ecuador, following a route created by Cass and the Dammer brothers along Ecuador´s volcanic corridor and high andes. Some more notable locations include: el angel reserve, Pinan (and the lake), Cuicocha lake and Parque del Condor near Otavalo, Antisana Reserve via Ruta del Condor, Cotopaxi National Park and the Quilotoa crater lake.
I actually do have some stats on the ride this time around, 934km and 27400m vertical and gpx track here (*there are some detours from the singletrack and TEMBR routes!):

Peticionarios destacaron una serie de problemáticas, incluyendo la invisibilidad particular de hombres trans y la violencia y discriminación que sufren los niños y las niñas intersexuales , niños y niñas trans y personas trans privadas de libertad. Asimismo, los peticionarios presentaron un estudio sobre la situación de las personas trans en Colombia, Costa Rica y Chile, en el que se llama la atención a la triple discriminación que sufren, no sólo en función de su identidad de género, sino también porque muchas de estas personas son mujeres y afro -descendientes. Como resultado, las personas trans han visto muchos de sus derechos comprometidos, tales como el derecho a la salud, el trabajo y el acceso a la justicia. Asimismo, los peticionarios señalaron que los defensores de los derechos humanos trans son víctimas de la persecución, y que el abuso policial y la situación de las personas trans migrantes siguen siendo graves preocupaciones. La CIDH expresa su preocupación por los graves obstáculos que personas trans enfrentan al acceder a los servicios básicos de salud, educación y empleo, los cuales están vinculados a la discriminación por parte de sus familias y la sociedad en general y arraigados en la falta de reconocimiento a sus identidades de género por parte de los Estados. La CIDH desea destacar que, al igual que con todas las otras personas, las personas trans e intersex tienen derecho a una vida digna. La Comisión insta a los Estados a llevar a cabo programas de capacitación para funcionarios públicos en todos los niveles de gobierno, incluyendo las fuerzas de seguridad, y a adoptar no patologización y legislación de identidad de género que incluya a niños y niñas, así como políticas públicas y guías para hacer frente a la situaciones de violencia y discriminación que sufren por personas trans. Por último, la Comisión también insta a los Estados Miembros de la OEA a adoptar protocolos de acción en relación con el nacimiento de las personas intersexuales, que sean respetuosos de su integridad personal y salud, y evitar cirugías "normalizadoras".

Petitioners highlighted a number of issues, including the particular invisibility of trans men and the violence and discrimination faced by intersex children, trans children, and trans persons deprived of liberty. The petitioners also presented a study on the situation of trans persons in Colombia, Costa Rica, and Chile, in which they called attention to the triple discrimination they experience, not only based on their gender identity but also because many of them are women and Afro-descendant. As a result, trans persons have seen many of their rights compromised, such as the right to health, work, and access to justice. The petitioners also pointed out that trans human rights defenders are victims of persecution, and that police abuse and the situation of migrant trans persons remain serious concerns. The IACHR is concerned about the serious hurdles trans persons face when accessing basic health services, education, and employment, obstacles that are linked to discrimination by their families and the society at large and entrenched in States’ failure to recognize their gender identities. The IACHR wishes to stress that, as with every other person, trans and intersex persons have the right to a life with dignity. [...]

He convinces his younger brother Alex and two best friends, Zach LaPointe and Scott Jasechko to help him make the move to Costa Rica by car. The determination, spirit and will of these four friends is put to the test by various obstacles along the way while engaging in the wonders and magic of Central America.

A new report by cybersecurity firm FireEye – obtained exclusively by NBC News – says hackers linked to North Korea recently targeted U.S. electric power companies with “spearphishing” emails, the network reported. The emails, which used fake invitations to a fundraiser to target victims, FireEye said, asked users to download the invitation attached to the email but really downloaded malware into the users computer network....
