ByWard Market (sometimes called By Ward Market, Byward Market or simply The Market, Marché By in French) is a district in Lower Town (Ottawa, Ontario) located east of the government and business district, surrounding the market buildings and open-air market on George, York, ByWard and William Streets.
The district is bordered on the west by Sussex Drive and Mackenzie Avenue, on the east by Cumberland Street. It stretches northwards to Cathcart Street, while to the south it is bordered by Rideau Street. The name refers to the old 'By Ward' of the City of Ottawa ('By' deriving from the surname of the engineer, Colonel John By, who was the area's original surveyor). The district comprises the main commercial part of the historic Lower Town area of Ottawa. According to the Canada 2011 Census, the population of the area was 3,063.
The market itself is Canada's oldest continuously operating farmers' market, regulated by the City of Ottawa's Markets Management group, which also operates the smaller west-end Parkdale Market. The market building is open year-round, and open-air stalls are operated in the warmer months offering fresh produce and flowers.
Market may refer to:
Ottawa (i/ˈɒtəwə/ or /ˈɒtəwɑː/; French pronunciation: [ɔtawa]) is the capital city of Canada. It stands on the south bank of the Ottawa River in the eastern portion of Southern Ontario. Ottawa borders Gatineau, Quebec; the two form the core of the Ottawa–Gatineau census metropolitan area (CMA) and the National Capital Region (NCR). The 2011 census reported a population of 883,391 within the city, making it the fourth-largest city in Canada, and 1,236,324 within the CMA, making it the fourth-largest CMA in Canada. The City of Ottawa has since estimated it had a population of 951,727 in 2014.
Founded in 1826 as Bytown, and incorporated as "Ottawa" in 1855, the city has evolved into a political and technological centre of Canada. Its original boundaries were expanded through numerous minor annexations and were ultimately replaced by a new city incorporation and major amalgamation in 2001 which significantly increased its land area. The city name "Ottawa" was chosen in reference to the Ottawa River nearby, which is a word derived from the Algonquin word Odawa, meaning "to trade".
La Machine is a commune in the Nièvre department in central France.
At the 1999 census, the population was 3,735. On 1 January 2012, the population was 3,472.
Mining marked its history. Coal was extracted beginning in the fifteenth century. The hamlet took the name of "La Machine" in reference to a machine which was used to extract the coal. Production stopped in 1974.
The coal mines attracted many workers and made the village and an economic engine for the region. From 1869 to 1946, the mines of La Machine, under the control of the Schneider Company, enjoyed a great prosperity and the development of the city accelerated. At the time of nationalization, the city had more than 6,000 inhabitants, with a quarter of them employed in the mine. Most are housed in housing estates built by the Company near wells :
City Sainte-Marie (1856-1857) St. Eudoxia City (1878) City of Zagots (1917-1918) City des Minimes (1922-1938)
Between 1917 and 1927, about 300 employees at the wells were Chinese. They are a part of the 140,000 Chinese that France and Britain had used to work in the back of the front during the First World War. Before their arrival in the village, some worked had already worked in the munitions factories also owned by the Schneider company. Only twenty stayed after the 1930s. They were to be followed by the Poles, Italians, Yugoslavs and North Africans. In 1936, 30% of the population of the village is of foreign origin.
Downtown Ottawa (French: Centre-Ville d'Ottawa) is the central area of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Like other downtowns it is the commercial and economic centre of the city. It is sometimes referred to as the Central Business District and contains Ottawa's financial district. It is bordered by the Ottawa River to the north, the Rideau Canal to the east, Gloucester Street to the south and Bronson Avenue to the west. This area and the residential neighbourhood to the south are also known locally as 'Centretown'. The total population of the area is 4123 (2011 Census).
Downtown Ottawa is dominated by government buildings, including Parliament Hill and the Supreme Court. Most prominent buildings are situated along Wellington, Sparks and Elgin streets. Most of the buildings are office towers containing the various government departments. While most of Ottawa's high tech industry is based elsewhere it also has a significant presence in the downtown core. The downtown also contains a number of apartments, hotels, and condominiums as well as the older single family homes and townhouses along its edges.

Quebec loves weed - the number of consumers here has been estimated as high as 1.2 million. But despite being home to ¼ of Canada’s cannabis users, the market here is way behind. Instead, 90% of the industry is controlled by the black market, with organized crime pulling the strings. But with legalization around the corner, small and large businesses alike are gearing up to compete with criminal groups for Quebec’s lucrative weed industry - valued at around 2.5 billion dollars. Meanwhile, biker gangs like the Hells Angels are expanding and they’re not going to just hand over their share of the market. This VICE doc explores what the complicated transition from a black to a legal cannabis market will look like in Quebec. We spend time with both illegal and legal players as they begin ma...

A captivating piece of art work that draws the attention of people of all ethnicity, race, religion, age, gender, and sex etc. "Long Ma" took the lead in the streets of Ottawa: the alleys of the Byward Market, a procession from City Hall to the Supreme Court and a final display at the Canadian War Museum.
