Kenya (/ˈkɛnjə/; locally [ˈkɛɲa]), officially the Republic of Kenya, is a country in Africa and a founding member of the East African Community (EAC). Its capital and largest city is Nairobi. Kenya's territory lies on the equator and overlies the East African Rift covering a diverse and expansive terrain that extends roughly from Lake Victoria to Lake Turkana (formerly called Lake Rudolf) and further south-east to the Indian Ocean. It is bordered by Tanzania to the south, Uganda to the west, South Sudan to the north-west, Ethiopia to the north and Somalia to the north-east. Kenya covers 581,309 km2 (224,445 sq mi), and had a population of approximately 45 million people in July 2014.
Kenya has a warm and humid tropical climate on its Indian Ocean coastline. The climate is cooler in the savannah grasslands around the capital city, Nairobi, and especially closer to Mount Kenya, which has snow permanently on its peaks. Further inland, in the Nyanza region, there is a hot and dry climate which becomes humid around Lake Victoria, the largest tropical fresh-water lake in the world. This gives way to temperate and forested hilly areas in the neighboring western region. The north-eastern regions along the border with Somalia and Ethiopia are arid and semi-arid areas with near-desert landscapes. Kenya is known for its safaris, diverse climate and geography, and expansive wildlife reserves and national parks such as the East and West Tsavo National Park, the Maasai Mara, Lake Nakuru National Park, and Aberdares National Park. Kenya has several world heritage sites such as Lamu and numerous beaches, including in Diani, Bamburi and Kilifi, where international yachting competitions are held every year.

Plot: This film, The Jose Lucas Story, is said to be based on a fictionalized account of a particular string of criminal exploits, leading to the arrest, conviction, incarceration, and too sudden death of one, Jose Lucas, a local Brooklyn kid whose early life reads like a Dicken's novel, and ends like a classic Shakespearean tragedy. He's convicted and given a 23-year prison sentence for having been a perpetrator in a notorious day-time jewelry heist in toney, downtown Georgetown, Washington, DC.(2005) Lucas had managed to be caught on a security camera with his homeboy Lex (the one who actually used the gun, shot the shop's jeweler, and managed also, to be un-masked on camera) by design of the other two culprits, Robert and 'E," who when arrested later, in another robbery, make a deal with the DA to escape the heavy sentences given Jose and Lex (who got 24 years as the shooter) by giving them up. The film attempts to get at the story behind that conviction, which many believed resulted in a grossly unfair sentence. After having accepted that Jose has lost in court, they had hoped to fight the verdict; Jose's defense did file and lose several appeals. They had settled into the reality that most residents-of- color in Brooklyn find themselves: that of having a loved one incarcerated.

South Africa became part of the BRICS group back in twenty ten and its clear to see why. From two thousand and two through to two thousand and eight, the country experienced annual growth averaging a tad under five percent per year and at times during that period it had teased the eight percent level giving a glimpse of the possibilities ahead. With vast natural resources such as gold, diamonds and platinum, excellent infrastructure and easy access to finance for business it had all the right ingredients in place for this trend to continue. The global recession hit hard however and, after a sharp contraction in the economy of six percent, it never really found its feet again. An increasingly corrupt government and high crime rates haven’t helped win foreign investment back into the region...

On April 15th 2013 I left for Kenya. I would be there for 17 days and enjoy great food, great culture great music, and great people. As an artist, I had the opportunity to be interviewed by the nations top TV / radio show hosts. I preformed at Embassy Cinema, now home to Maximum Miracle Center Church, where I have life long friendships with the pastors and youth. Being appreciated and loved for what you do and who you are is important. Kenya is a place where I turn on TV and see my music videos played on prime time and hear my songs in rush hour traffic played on radio. This was not my first tour here and will not be my last! 'Twende Kazi' is Kiswahili for "Lets get to work" or simply "Lets go". Often used in the Kenyan urban contemporary culture to coerce someone into doing/accomplishing a certain task. 'Twende Kazi, Never Let You Go' is an ode to Kapuka, a genre of hip-hop music popular in Kenya, that infuses hip-hop, dancehall and African dance music vibes into one. Health care in Kenya is expensive. And so is corruption that diverts millions of dollars meant for buying medicine and paying doctors. When Cynthia loses a patient during one of the worst doctor's strike in Kenya in early 2017, she vows to relentlessly champion for the universalization of health care, especially for the most vulnerable rural populations with whom she spends more than 90% of her doctor time. Cynthia is a young government doctor working in remote parts of Kenya to serve the poor, who often do not have access to medical services and personnel. She has keen interests in global and public health, and women rights, and is a fervent activist having led a successful Twitter story campaign to support doctors’ bid to take universal healthcare to all Kenyans via the implementation ...

The burden of kidney treatment in Kenya is set to lessen with the installation of more dialysis machines across the country. The increase in the facilities will enable patients to access the treatment easily and affordably with the centres expected to reach an all time high of over 200 from an initial one in 1978. But as NTV's Brenda Wanga reports on health assignment, the dialysis machines are only a stop gap measure and experts contend that more awareness needs to be raised about organ donation to facilitate kidney transplants. Africa's urban centers are growing as are its slums. For many Kenyan residents, their only hope for a better life may come from non-profit organizations and NGOs. VOA's Vincent Makori reports.
Talks to end a crippling strike by doctors and nurses in East Africa's biggest economy are still deadlocked. Kenya had just under 9,700 doctors by the end of 2015. The latest dispute has been triggered by the non-implementation of a deal on wages, and working conditions agreed with the government in 2011. In early October, the Employment and Labour Relations Court ruled that Kenya's Health Ministry had deliberately not implemented the agreement. Health department officials had tried to claim the deal had been signed by a party that wasn't authorised to do so. At the time, however, that person was the ministry's top civil servant. Between 2013 and 2015, over 2000 doctors left the public sector and went into private practice. The loss of talent continues.CCTV's Ramah Nyang' spoke to Dr Jacqu...

Without the necessary support and access to clinics, pregnant women and new mothers in far-flung areas battle to receive information that may be the difference between stunting or normal growth, even life or death. Now, an innovative program is linking pregnant women with information through mobile technology. For the first time members of Kenya’s counter-terrorism police admit to “eliminating” suspected Muslim radicals. Speaking exclusively to Al Jazeera’s Investigative Unit, officers from four units of Kenya’s counter-terrorism apparatus admitted the police assassinate suspects on government orders. They claim that the order to assassinate is made by the National Security Council, a body chaired by President Uhuru Kenyatta. The film examines how extra-judicial killings are seemingly becoming normalized, thirteen years after the so-called ‘War on Terror’ was declared. http://www.aljazeera.com/kenyadeathsquads/ Subscribe to our channel http://bit.ly/AJSubscribe Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/AJEnglish Find us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/aljazeera Check our website ...

The war against terrorism will be won when countries share intelligence and military experiences. President Uhuru Kenyatta says shared terrorism threats call for shared responses in order to combat the global catastrophe. The head of state made the remarks when he joined His Majesty King Abdullah of Jordan in presiding over the closure of the Swift Eagle Military training in Embakasi Nairobi. The leaders pledged to forge stronger military ties to combat emerging security threats.
The 51st Jamhuri day celebrations bore the hallmarks of a country driven to the edge by security issues. Right from the setup, the whole program was championed by the military as the country displayed its prowess and military might from the skies. The message: Kenya was fighting a proxy terror war and security was at stake. A visibly agitated president defended the anti-terror amendment bill in parliament saying it’s geared towards insulating the country from terror threats. The bill, just like the U.S.A patriot act, advocates for indefinite detention, interception of communication at will by the spy agency, prohibition of publishing terror victims pictures among others. The game of rugby has recently gained popularity in the country following the good performance staged by the national rugby 7s team in the IRB series and the recent world cup where Kenya finished 4th in Moscow. But little has been told of the national women's rugby team, which has been a great threat in the East African region, winning 7 of the 16 games they have played against Uganda in the Elgon cup since 2006. Our reporter attended few of their training sessions, and as she found out, it is not easy to become a powerful and successful woman rugby player.

In this film Wild Frontiers, Jonny Bealby, explains about tourism in Kenya. Here is the text... Jonny here, right now I am at Borana Ranch, high on the Laikipia Plateau, in the lee of Mount Kenya. And in this short film I am going to talk about tourism in Kenya. If I asked what's the first thing you think about when turning your mind to travel in this colourful East African country, you'd almost certainly say wildlife. And of course you'd be right as over 80 percent of holidays here will have a wildlife element. From the Marsabit National Park in the north, to the Masai Mara and Amboseli National Parks in the south, the planes of Kenya are teeming with wildlife or all shapes and sizes offering, along with its neighbour Tanzania, the best place in the world to view game. And if you throw i...
Travel video about destination Kenya. Founded by Alexander The Great in 332 B.C., the city of Alexandria is located in the Nile Delta and it was here that Caesar and Mark Anthony fell under Cleopatra’s spell.Cairo is Africa’s largest city and the heart of the Arab world, extreme poverty living next to opulent wealth, and modern, Western boutiques next to ancient souks. The Cairo Museum is home to the most extensive collection of Egyptian antiquities, including the golden mask and tomb of Tutankamun. Towering above almost any other human achievement are the impressive three pyramids of Gisa. The Cheops Pyramid, the world’s largest single construction, took four hundred thousand workers twenty years to build. It weighs as much as all the cathedrals in Europe put together and spans an area of...
Kenya, with its numerous natural wonders gives a tourist the joy of a seaside holiday and the thrills of a safari. One can sit in the shade of a palm tree and swim in the emerald green water of the Indian Ocean, which runs out to the white, sandy beaches. We can take a look at Mombasa, most important port of Eastern Africa, the city of the Tusk Gate and the Jesus Fort. How about a typical African safari to Tsavo? Naturally, in the meantime we can meet elephants, lions, giraffes and dolphins. We can marvel at the 13th century city of Gedi. We can take a boat trip among the coral reefs of the sea national parks, or be amazed by the war dance of the Masai people, and can have a dinner at a coral cave.

Travel video about destination Nairobi in Kenya. Nairobi is Kenya's busy, expensive yet dangerous capital city. It is also both fascinating and modern. Nairobi is the country's most important and beautiful city and with the finest temperate climate between Johannesburg and Cairo, is located at an altitude of almost 1,700 metres above sea level. The government district of City Square contains the Conference Centre and the Kanu Tower, the headquarters of government and the city's tallest building. Canons guard the main entrance to the National Museum that is situated on Museum Hill, a fascinating building that covers much of Kenya's culture and history. The museum provides an interesting insight into Pre-history as well as to various cultures and the country's flora and fauna. Directly i...

I was in East Africa and I was dying to go on a Safari. I almost died when I saw how much the tours cost. A fellow backpacker at my camp informed me of a 3D2N Maasai Mara Safari that cost US$300 that I jumped on immediately! In the end, I was very pleased with the whole experience. My tour group and I were housed in a comfortable eco-camp about 10 minutes outside of the park for 2 nights with all the meals included. We also had 1 full day game drive along with 1 sunrise drive. I saw so many animals from antelopes, zebras, giraffes, elephants, lions (so many lions..) to warthogs. I never saw the elusive rhino nor leopard to complete the "Big Five" but seeing 3 (lions, elephants, buffalo) out of the 5 was stellar! Everyone is in the same park and will see the same animals so the more you ...

by AJAY JAIN Seasoned travellers like me also find it a challenge to plan a wildlife trip to Kenya in Africa. There are lots of variable to figure. These include: * Accommodation: Where to stay - hotels or camps? What is the right location, how much should one be spending and more. * Safari Vehicles: You can go in vans or 4x4 Landcruisers. What works for whom? * Guides: They come at different proficiency levels and you pay accordingly. Who is suitable for you? * Which company should you book with? Different companies have differing quality of vehicles, guides, walkie-talkies to inform each other about sightings etc. Picking the right one could have a big bearing on your experience. * Transportation: How do get from one park to another within Kenya? By road? Fly? I spoke to Shivang Me...

Kenyans have voted in two national elections since August, and there are now calls for a third. Opposition leader Raila Odinga has branded the presidential election re-run a sham, and wants a new poll within three months. The vote on Thursday was marred by violence and a low turnout. Many Odinga supporters refused to cast their ballots, banding behind the slogan 'no reforms, no election.' The country’s divided - and there are fears of another cycle of post-election violence. When that happened 10 years ago, 1,100 people died. So would a third election make any difference? Kenya’s October 26th re-run presidential election appears to be in jeopardy after news that one of the main candidates, Raila Odinga, has withdrawn from the race. Odinga’s announcement follows weeks of protests by his supporters who believe the opposition leader unfairly lost the election. In August, Odinga petitioned the country’s Supreme Court to annul the election results, claiming 'illegalities and irregularities' had taken place. The court agreed and ordered a re-run. But now that Odinga is out of the race, what will happen? Odinga has said the protests will continue until the opposition’s demands over election reforms are met. But President Uhuru Kenyatta says voting will not be delayed. So with Kenya’s electoral commission, the president, and the opposition deadlocked … what now?...
