Belarus (i/bɛləˈruːs/ bel-ə-ROOSS; Belarusian: Белару́сь, tr. Bielaruś, IPA: [bʲɛlaˈrusʲ]; Russian: Белоруссия, tr. Byelorussiya; IPA: [bʲɪloˈrussɪʲɐ]), officially the Republic of Belarus, is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe bordered by Russia to the northeast, Ukraine to the south, Poland to the west, and Lithuania and Latvia to the northwest. Its capital is Minsk; other major cities include Brest, Hrodna (Grodno), Homiel (Gomel), Mahilioŭ (Mogilev) and Vitsebsk (Vitebsk). Over 40% of its 207,600 square kilometres (80,200 sq mi) is forested. Its strongest economic sectors are service industries and manufacturing.
Until the 20th century, different states at various times controlled the lands of modern-day Belarus: for example: the Principality of Polotsk (11th to 14th centuries), the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, and the Russian Empire. In the aftermath of the 1917 Russian Revolution, Belarus declared independence as the Belarusian People's Republic, succeeded by the Socialist Soviet Republic of Byelorussia, which became a founding constituent republic of the Soviet Union in 1922 and was renamed as the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic (Byelorussian SSR). Belarus lost almost half of its territory to Poland after the Polish-Soviet war of 1919-1921. Much of the borders of Belarus took their modern shape in 1939 when some lands of the Second Polish Republic were reintegrated into it after the Soviet invasion of Poland and were finalized after World War II. During World War II, military operations devastated Belarus, which lost about a third of its population and more than half of its economic resources. The republic was redeveloped in the post-war years. In 1945 Belarus became a founding member of the United Nations, along with the Soviet Union and the Ukrainian SSR.

The Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko tasked his government to find the solution to this problem using the “known methods” and avoiding experiments. Meeting of the presidents of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan March 20, 2015 It’s time to think about the prospects of creating a currency union between Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan, President Vladimir Putin has said. “We think the time has come to talk about the possibility to form a currency union in the future,” Putin said Friday at a meeting with his Kazakh and Belarusian counterparts Nursultan Nazarbaev and Aleksandr Lukashenko in Astana. At the Friday meeting in Astana the heads of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan – all member states of the Eurasian Economic Union - are discussing a joint game plan to tackle the global economic slowdown and challenges in the energy market that has se...

MINSK, BELARUS — Viral video of a smoking hot math teacher is giving the internet a stiffy and making us here at TomoNews ask: “Where were teachers like this when we were taking AP Calculus?” Stunning blonde Oksana Neveselaya is a math teacher in Minsk, capital of the former Soviet Republic of Belarus. Video of Oksana was filmed by a student and uploaded to YouTube recently, where it’s gotten a golden reception, the Mirror reported. It’s not difficult to see why math might not be the only thing that’s hard in her classroom, although anything that motivates kids to go to school surely has to be a good thing. “Oksana love” is experiencing exponential growth and her social media accounts have blown up since the video was published. She’s racked up gazillions of new followers, e...
Throughout the former Soviet Union, Belarus was famous for making tractors at the state-run Minsk Tractor Works, which this year celebrated its 70th anniversary. Since the collapse of the USSR 25 years ago this month, Belarus has struggled to reform its state-run economic model, which critics say is failing. But there are also hopeful signs of local, high-tech innovation battling its way into global markets, as VOA’s Daniel Schearf reports from Minsk. There are fears the emergency loan given to Belarus will only hold off the nation from bankruptcy for several months.
More than two decades after the fall of the Soviet Union, Belarusian capital Minsk retains many of the hallmarks of the Communist era. But, in at least one corner of the city, cutting-edge, 21st century technology is at the forefront. This high-tech park is home to a number of global IT firms. Among those who have an office here is the Cyprus-based Wargaming, the creators of worldwide smash hit World of Tanks. The game is one of the five most popular in Europe and the US. It boasts 100 million players worldwide who take part in virtual battles in World War II-era tanks. Wargaming is not alone. U.S.-based EPAM Systems, which was founded by two Belarusians in 1993, also has a presence at the Minsk high-tech park. The company has seen annual growth of more than 20% for more than five years...

EUobserver / Brussels (28th March) - Alexander Lukaschenko has ruled Belarus with an iron fist for 18 years. MEPs from the European Parliament's Belarus delegation discuss the merits of putting economic sanctions on Belarus with Nikolaj Nielsen, EUobserver's investigative reporter. By Méabh Mc Mahon
Belarus' news agency Belta quoted Economy Minister Nikolai Snopkov as saying the country has cut its 2015 economic growth forecast to 0.2-0.7 percent from the previous 2.0 percent because of the economic slowdown in Russia. In recent years, Belarus has received tens of billions of dollars in loans and rebates for energy prices from Russia, hit this year by a fall in global oil price and Western sanctions over the Ukraine crisis. The Belarussian government also cut its 2015 oil price forecast to $83 per barrel from $100 per barrel. http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/news/economy/~3/3Zk9hC952KI/story01.htm http://www.wochit.com
DOPESHEET: Belorussian Prime Minister Mikhail Myasnikovich participates in Lithuanian-Belarusian economic forum and says cooperation will bring more benefit than isolation. Relations with the EU's eastern neighbors will be one of the key issues on the Lithuanian EU Presidency's agenda in the second half of this year. The EU Eastern Partnership summit in November in Vilnius will be dedicated for the issue. Lithuanian Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius noted that Belarusian Prime Minister could also be invited to the summit, but did not make any political comments in the business forum. Contrary to the President Alexander Lukashenko and his Minister of Foreign Affairs, Myasnikovich is not on the EU's blacklist of persons who are banned from entering EU member states due to their involve...

Some families are trying to develop agro tourism. By now they receive guests only for a day offering them an excursion about the local territories, horse riding, mushrooms and berries' gathering, fishing, folklore program, tasting belarussian cuisine. Over 12 years we collected hundreds of photographs of the awesome art, music, dance, sculpture and general culture of Belarus. The students are ambitious to achieve success - whilst their teachers are enthusiastic, talented and dedicated.95% of these photographs were taken within 60 miles/100 kilometres of Chernobyl in the city of Mozyr. Most examples are the works of young students although also included are exhibits from a few of their teachers.Let us show that the culture of Belarus is indeed a jewel in world culture - no longer to be kept a secret. I will always look on the inhabitants of Belarus as the nation with sparkling eyes. The music is provided by the teachers and students of Art and Music School No2. Others may promote a different story but this is mine. Enjoy. Don
Since we eloped in Las Vegas in 2013 and my husband never met my family, we decided to go to Belarus and have a "little family wedding dinner". The dinner grew into a real folk wedding celebration in Strochitsy (Belarusian State Museum of Folk Architecture and Rural Lifestyle) Here's the link to their site: http://etna.by/e/english.html We wore a real hand-made Belarusian folk attire. The whole ceremony was 100% authentic. This is how people got married in Belarus 100 years ago. The food was pure Belarusian too. The hostess of the wedding speaks Belarusian but you may have an idea of what's going on just by watching the footage. This event took place on July 3, 2014

Belarus has established the health care system, features of which are the full coverage of medical care provided by the budget resources, government regulation and planning with the implementation of complex state programs in the field of public health. The solution of problems related to cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a priority task for the Ministry of Health and for the Belarusian government as a whole, the majority of health expenditures in Belarus are covered by the state. In the last decade Belarus has seen a trend towards reduction of CVD mortality due to the development of high level specialised care and treatment for CVD and access to high-tech facilities for aute myocardial infarction (AMI) and stroke....
In October 2015 a presidential election was held in Belarus. It wasn't a convincing contest and few thought that victory would go to anyone other than the man who had ruled the country for the past two decades. With an economy in tatters and a chilling charge list of human rights violations against his name, Alexander Lukashenko has long presided over Europe's closest equivalent to North Korea. That said, the president many accuse of being a dictator eschews a personality cult. There's little need, say his opponents; Lukashenko rules through fear. Today, time-warped Belarus provides a glimpse into what life was like before the collapse of the Soviet Union, where the secret police are still called the KGB and the success of the economy is measured in tractor sales. In the run-up to the ...

The terrible human toll of the world's worst nuclear disaster still isn't fully known - but thousands are already ill or dead from radiation sickness or cancer. Some five (m) million people were exposed to Chernobyl's radioactive fallout - but they are not they only ones to suffer the horrible consequences. In the former Soviet republic of Belarus, a second generation of Chernobyl victims is growing up, displaying shocking levels of infant illness. A land of rusty tractors and tacky fashion; a Soviet state in all but name; Europe’s last dictatorship: suffice to say Belarus has something of an image problem. Though these lazy stereotypes carry some semblance of truth, Belarus is a largely misunderstood country that’s had a bit of a raw deal of it in western media. Consequently, those who visit are often surprised to discover a multifaceted destination rich in history, brimming with culture and populated by warm and generous inhabitants, who are gradually pulling themselves from the shadows of their past. The truth is that Belarus’ appeal might well be in its isolation. Indeed this is a destination where you can still see what life was like during the days of communism, with an abundance of Soviet iconography, especially in the b...

An interesting documentary on joining the Russian military special forces. Spetsnaz (Russian: спецназ; IPA: [spʲɪt͡sˈnas]) abbreviation for Войска специального назначения, tr. Voyska spetsialnogo naznacheniya, pronounced [vɐjsˈka spʲɪt͡sɨˈalʲnəvə nəznɐˈt͡ɕenʲɪjə] (English: Special Purpose Forces) is an umbrella term for special forces in Russian. Historically, the term referred to special military units controlled by the military intelligence service GRU (Spetsnaz GRU). It also describes special purpose units, or task forces of other ministries (such as the Ministry of Emergency Situations' special rescue unit)[1] in post-Soviet countries. Etymology The Russian acronyms SPETSNAZ (spetsialnogo naznacheniya) and OSNAZ (osobogo naznacheniya), both meaning "special purpose", are general terms...

Belarus Travel Video - Eastern Europes outcast, Belarus lies at the edge of the region and seems determined to avoid integration with the rest of the continent at all costs. Taking its lead from the Soviet Union rather than the European Union, this pint-sized dictatorship may seem like a strange choice for travellers, but its isolation remains at the heart of its appeal. While the rest of Eastern Europe has charged headlong into capitalism, Belarus offers a chance to visit a Europe with almost no advertising, litter or graffiti. Far more than just the last dictatorship in Europe - Condoleezza Rices phrase has come to haunt Alexander Lukashenkos democratically challenged country - Belarus is a land of earthy humour, friendly people and courage in the face of bleak political adversity. Please consider supporting this upcoming, month-long, artistic fieldwork residency with Yiddishkayt's Helix Project, conducting embodied, artistic fieldwork in former sites of Yiddish culture. This video, along with clips from a performance piece, was submitted with my application to Helix. Warning: it's raw and windy!! The funds I seek to raise will support the final leg of this (actual) journey with Yiddishkayt, covering costs of one month travelling in Belarus and Poland. In addition to Helix's curriculum, I will let my body guide the experience, gathering source material including text, photographs, sound recordings, and movement scores as we travel through former Yiddish cultural centers. These fragments will be reimagined and recontextualized for performance. Your support goes dir...

For more than two decades, with the sustained if sometimes lukewarm backing of neighbouring Russia, Alexander Lukashenko has governed the Republic of Belarus with an iron fist - in the process earning himself the unfortunate sobriquet of "Europe's last dictator" because of his habit of ruthlessly squashing all dissent. But earlier this year opposition voices finally managed to make themselves heard. Over just a few weeks, protests against a new tax to be levied on the unemployed quickly degenerated into more general anti-government affairs led by a charismatic opposition figure. These soon spread from Minsk, the capital, to other towns and cities across Belarus. So would these demonstrations strengthen or weaken the regime's hold on power? We sent filmmakers Glenn Ellis and Katerina Ba...
