MAPSOURCE, NROUTE free AND NZ MAPS + USB GPS DETAILS/STEPS BELOW:
1) My ten year old Laptop is a Sony Viao with Windows XP and a USB port. The battery lasts for about 2.5hrs but I also have a car cigarette charger -- Tragus Car Charger no APD046AP which fits nearly all laptops.
2) Buy a GPS Garmin 18x USB Receiver - it cost me c.$200 from Burnsco Marine at Westhaven Auckland shop but they will have to import it from an Australia Wholesaler and courier it to you. I think it maybe best to buy a Garmin brand as they interface with the mapping programs below better. Also after 3 months use my laptop/Windows XP has not had "crazy mouse syndrome" (I.e the PC thinks the GPS receiver is 1980's roller mouse) as long as I make sure nRoute is fully loaded before plugging into the USB. This 18x GPS receiver as you can see in the video is accurate to about 7m most of the time. The only issue I have found with it is it does not work inside a house (needs to be close to a window to get sat reception).
3) Load Mapsource - this map loading software is easy to use but has been discontinued therefore on most download sites you get an error "Garmin can not find a older version of mapsource" and it blocks the download. The solution is to download from this link JaVaWa GMTK - JaVaWa GMTK prepares automatically your PC so that MapSource will install properly for the first time on your PC.
4) Download the latest version of Mapsource Version 1.16 -- Note the earlier version 1.14 has issues.
5) Now that the old Mapsource directory is there you can also install the latest MapSource Garmin update: http://www8.garmin.com/support/download ... jsp?id=209
6) Go to this link http://gwprojects.org to get the latest NZ road maps Latest Mapset w/ Global Indexing Street Searching - Releases
7) Then click on the "here" link on the page above which will run the POI installer for the maps above straight into Mapsource.
8) You can also download the latest NZ topo in this link TOPO ADDON MAPSET with roads v8.1 - 625MB - Download for PC. This map is in the video and does not have the POI's but shows the roads more clearly. download from http://gwprojects.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t;=1810
9) Follow the instructions in the "Download to PC" link - I had real issues with the latest versions of 7-Zip however if you use the 9.33 beta version this works great. There are more maps on this link http://gwprojects.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t;=1810
10) Then click on the latest link in this thread say page #18 i.e the Points of interest (POI) Installer monthly/weekly update http://gwprojects.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t;=985&start;=255 which will run the installer for the maps above straight into Mapsource.
11) Once you have downloaded at least two maps (e.g. roads with global search index with POI's with topographical and say topographical only into Mapsource then a new drop down selection tab in the top right is automatically created so you can tab between both maps (road/POI's and topo).
12) Download nRoute from the above link #6
13) You are good to go -- In summary the two maps: a) Roads, POI's (shops fuel, toilets, fixed speed cameras etc) + topo and, b) Topographical map only that you have downloaded into Mapsource should automatically show in nRoute in the top left tabs which the system which has the direction voice prompts.
14) FYI: The little red triangle icon on the top toolbar centres the nRoute screen as the vehicle moves. The nRoute manual shows how to search for locations and set routes, etc and is well worth a read as there is plenty of functions. You don't have to run Mapsource this is just to initially load the maps in the PC which automatically transfer to nRoute which is the voice prompting GPS program

Desperate beachgoers formed a human chain to battle ''treacherous and dumping'' waves to save a boy from drowning.
Twelve-year-old Joshua McQuoid was caught by a wave and swept out while playing with a friend at the beach on Napier's Marine Parade, in New Zealand.
A German tourist went to the boy's aid but was unable to keep a hold of him, a police spokesman said. The conditions were described as ''treacherous with dumping waves and an extremely strong undertow''.
A police officer then swam to the boy but was unable to hold him due to the heavy surf.
He was joined by a few members of the public who tried to help. A second officer entered the water and reached the boy, at times losing hold of him as the boy went under water.
He was under for ''considerable periods of up to 20 seconds at a time and fading fast'', police said.
About 12 members of the public and four police officers then desperately grabbed hold of each other to form a human chain, managing to pull the boy to shore.
Initially he was ''unresponsive, physically spent, and could not move unaided''. He was moved up on to the beach where members of the public gave him first aid.
Joshua's father, Shane, said the family was grateful to the members of the public and the police who helped in the rescue.
''I just wish I could thank each and every one. Without them basically my son wouldn't be here.''
Joshua was at the beach with Hikiroa Ratapu and another friend when the wave knocked them both down, Mr McQuoid said.
''I think they had their feet in the water and from what Josh said he turned around to speak to his mate when the wave hit.''
Senior Sergeant Mike Stevenson said the actions of the police officers were ''admirable''.
''The first two officers who braved the conditions, they are extremely admirable and displayed a lot of bravery getting into the surf.
''If they had not done what they had done I'm positive the boy may not still be with us.''
He said that stretch of coastline was ''notorious'', with a ''pretty steep drop-off, thumping waves and really strong undertow''.

New Zealand (/njuːˈziːlənd/ new-ZEE-lənd, Māori: Aotearoa [aɔˈtɛaɾɔa]) is an island country in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. Somewhere between 1250 and 1300 CE, Polynesians settled in the islands that were to become New Zealand, and developed a distinctive Māori culture. In 1642, Abel Tasman, a Dutch explorer, became the first European to sight New Zealand. In 1840, representatives of the British Crown and Māori Chiefs signed the Treaty of Waitangi, making New Zealand a British colony. Today, the majority of New Zealand's population of 4.5 million is of European descent; the indigenous Māori are the largest minority, followed by Asians and Pacific Islanders. Reflecting this, New Zealand's culture is mainly derived from Māori and early British settlers, with recent broadening arising from increased immigration. Namibia (/nəˈmɪbiə/, /næˈ-/), officially the Republic of Namibia (German: 
Republik Namibia ; Afrikaans: Republiek van Namibië), and formerly German South-West Africa and then South West Africa, is a country in southern Africa whose western border is the Atlantic Ocean. It shares land borders with Zambia and Angola to the north, Botswana to the east and South Africa to the south and east. Although it does not border Zimbabwe, less than 200 metres of the Zambezi River (essentially a small bulge in Botswana to achieve a Botswana/Zambia micro-border) separates them at their closest points. It gained independence from South Africa on 21 March 1990, following the Namibian War of Independence. Its capital and largest city is Windhoek. Namibia is a member state of the United Nations (UN), the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the African Union (AU), and the Commonwealth of Nations.

Yachting Pages is available either in its original printed form, or online. MAPSOURCE, NROUTE free AND NZ MAPS + USB GPS DETAILS/STEPS BELOW: 1) My ten year old Laptop is a Sony Viao with Windows XP and a USB port. The battery lasts for about 2.5hrs but I also have a car cigarette charger -- Tragus Car Charger no APD046AP which fits nearly all laptops. 2) Buy a GPS Garmin 18x USB Receiver - it cost me c.$200 from Burnsco Marine at Westhaven Auckland shop but they will have to import it from an Australia Wholesaler and courier it to you. I think it maybe best to buy a Garmin brand as they interface with the mapping programs below better. Also after 3 months use my laptop/Windows XP has not had "crazy mouse syndrome" (I.e the PC thinks the GPS receiver is 1980's roller mouse) as long as I make sure nRoute is fully loaded before plugging into the USB. This 18x GPS receiver as you can see in the video is accurate to about 7m most of the time. The only issue I have found with it is it does not work inside a house (needs to be close to a window to get sat reception).
3) Load Mapsource - this map loading software is easy to use but has been discontinued therefore on most download sites you get an error "Garmin can not find a older version of mapsource" and it blocks the download. The solution is to download from this link JaVaWa GMTK - JaVaWa GMTK prepares automatically your PC so that MapSource will install properly for the first time on your PC.
4) Download the latest version of Mapsource Version 1.16 -- Note the earlier version 1.14 has issues.
5) Now that the old Mapsource directory is there you can also install the latest MapSource Garmin update: http://www8.garmin.com/support/download ... jsp?id=209
6) Go to this link http://gwprojects.org to get the latest NZ road maps Latest Mapset w/ Global Indexing Street Searching - Releases
7) Then click on the "here" link on the page above which will run the POI installer for the maps above straight into Mapsource.
8) You can also download the latest NZ topo in this link TOPO ADDON MAPSET with roads v8.1 - 625MB - Download for PC. This map is in the video and does not have the POI's but shows the roads more clearly. download from http://gwprojects.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t;=1810

MAPSOURCE, NROUTE free AND NZ MAPS + USB GPS DETAILS/STEPS BELOW:
1) My ten year old Laptop is a Sony Viao with Windows XP and a USB port. The battery lasts for about 2.5hrs but I also have a car cigarette charger -- Tragus Car Charger no APD046AP which fits nearly all laptops.
2) Buy a GPS Garmin 18x USB Receiver - it cost me c.$200 from Burnsco Marine at Westhaven Auckland shop but they will have to import it from an Australia Wholesaler and courier it to you. I think it maybe best to buy a Garmin brand as they interface with the mapping programs below better. Also after 3 months use my laptop/Windows XP has not had "crazy mouse syndrome" (I.e the PC thinks the GPS receiver is 1980's roller mouse) as long as I make sure nRoute is fully loaded before plugging into the USB. This 18x GPS receiver as you can see in the video is accurate to about 7m most of the time. The only issue I have found with it is it does not work inside a house (needs to be close to a window to get sat reception).
3) Load Mapsource - this map loading software is easy to use but has been discontinued therefore on most download sites you get an error "Garmin can not find a older version of mapsource" and it blocks the download. The solution is to download from this link JaVaWa GMTK - JaVaWa GMTK prepares automatically your PC so that MapSource will install properly for the first time on your PC.
4) Download the latest version of Mapsource Version 1.16 -- Note the earlier version 1.14 has issues.
5) Now that the old Mapsource directory is there you can also install the latest MapSource Garmin update: http://www8.garmin.com/support/download ... jsp?id=209
6) Go to this link http://gwprojects.org to get the latest NZ road maps Latest Mapset w/ Global Indexing Street Searching - Releases
7) Then click on the "here" link on the page above which will run the POI installer for the maps above straight into Mapsource.
8) You can also download the latest NZ topo in this link TOPO ADDON MAPSET with roads v8.1 - 625MB - Download for PC. This map is in the video and does not have the POI's but shows the roads more clearly. download from http://gwprojects.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t;=1810

Desperate beachgoers formed a human chain to battle ''treacherous and dumping'' waves to save a boy from drowning.
Twelve-year-old Joshua McQuoid was caught by a wave and swept out while playing with a friend at the beach on Napier's Marine Parade, in New Zealand.
A German tourist went to the boy's aid but was unable to keep a hold of him, a police spokesman said. The conditions were described as ''treacherous with dumping waves and an extremely strong undertow''.
A police officer then swam to the boy but was unable to hold him due to the heavy surf.
He was joined by a few members of the public who tried to help. A second officer entered the water and reached the boy, at times losing hold of him as the boy went under water.
He was under for ''considerable periods of up to 20 seconds at a time and fading fast'', police said.
About 12 members of the public and four police officers then desperately grabbed hold of each other to form a human chain, managing to pull the boy to shore.
Initially he was ''unresponsive, physically spent, and could not move unaided''. He was moved up on to the beach where members of the public gave him first aid.
Joshua's father, Shane, said the family was grateful to the members of the public and the police who helped in the rescue.
''I just wish I could thank each and every one. Without them basically my son wouldn't be here.''
Joshua was at the beach with Hikiroa Ratapu and another friend when the wave knocked them both down, Mr McQuoid said.
''I think they had their feet in the water and from what Josh said he turned around to speak to his mate when the wave hit.''
Senior Sergeant Mike Stevenson said the actions of the police officers were ''admirable''.
''The first two officers who braved the conditions, they are extremely admirable and displayed a lot of bravery getting into the surf.
''If they had not done what they had done I'm positive the boy may not still be with us.''
He said that stretch of coastline was ''notorious'', with a ''pretty steep drop-off, thumping waves and really strong undertow''.

Polynesians settled New Zealand in 1250--1300 CE and developed a distinctive Māori culture. Abel Tasman, a Dutch explorer, was the first European to sight New Zealand in 1642 CE. In 1840, the British Crown and Māori signed the Treaty of Waitangi, making New Zealand a British colony. Today, the majority of New Zealand's population of 4.5 million is of European descent; the indigenous Māori are the largest minority, followed by Asians and Pacific Islanders. Reflecting this, New Zealand's culture is mainly derived from Māori and early British settlers, with recent broadening arising from increased immigration. The official languages are English, Māori and New Zealand Sign Language, with English predominant. The country's economy was historically dominated by the export of wool, but exports of dairy products, meat, and wine, along with tourism, are more significant today.

Capable of using unprepared runways for takeoffs and landings, the C-130 was originally designed as a troop, medical evacuation, and cargo transport aircraft. The versatile airframe has found uses in a variety of other roles, including as a gunship (AC-130), for airborne assault, search and rescue, scientific research support, weather reconnaissance, aerial refueling, maritime patrol, and aerial firefighting. It is now the main tactical airlifter for many military forces worldwide. Over 40 models and variants of the Hercules serve with more than 60 nations.
The C-130 entered service with U.S. in the 1950s, followed by Australia and others. During its years of service, the Hercules family has participated in numerous military, civilian and humanitarian aid operations. The family has the longest continuous production run of any military aircraft in history. In 2007, the C-130 became the fifth aircraft—after the English Electric Canberra, Boeing B-52 Stratofortress, Tupolev Tu-95, and Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker, all designs with various forms of aviation gas turbine powerplants—to mark 50 years of continuous use with its original primary customer, in this case, the United States Air Force. The C-130 is one of the only military aircraft to remain in continuous production for over 50 years with its original customer, as the updated C-130J Super Hercules.

Its aims include accelerating economic growth, social progress, sociocultural evolution among its members, protection of regional peace and stability, and opportunities for member countries to discuss differences peacefully.
ASEAN covers a land area of 4.46 million km², which is 3% of the total land area of Earth, and has a population of approximately 600 million people, which is 8.8% of the world's population. The sea area of ASEAN is about three times larger than its land counterpart. In 2012, its combined nominal GDP had grown to more than US$ 2.3 trillion. If ASEAN were a single entity, it would rank as the eighth largest economy in the world.

Welcome to the first of our new segments with underwater photographer Amanda Cotton. Amanda gets to travel all over the world, leading photography expeditions and teaching others underwater photography. From time to time we'll catch her in some of these locations to hear about her latest adventures and to check out some of her new photos.
Amanda will be in London, England, fresh from an expedition to photograph wild killer whales in Norway. This is a first for her, so she'll no doubt have some great stories and amazing photos. Amanda will also share a little bit about killer whale ecology with the classrooms that join in.
Amanda is a Professional Nikon Photographer specializing in underwater imagery. As an avid scuba diver and ocean enthusiast,
Amanda's goal is to help the general public embrace the beauty below the waves, in hopes that with awareness comes concern. The conservation and preservation of this ecosystem is of the highest priority to Amanda.

Yet in Vietnam the Army experienced tactical success and strategic failure... U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger wrote in a secret memo to President Gerald Ford that "in terms of military tactics, we cannot help draw the conclusion that our armed forces are not suited to this kind of war. Even the Special Forces who had been designed for it could not prevail." Even Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara concluded that "the achievement of a military victory by U.S. forces in Vietnam was indeed a dangerous illusion."
Doubts surfaced as to the effectiveness of large-scale, sustained bombing. As Army Chief of Staff Harold Keith Johnson noted, "if anything came out of Vietnam, it was that air power couldn't do the job." Even General William Westmoreland admitted that the bombing had been ineffective. As he remarked, "I still doubt that the North Vietnamese would have relented."
The inability to bomb Hanoi to the bargaining table also illustrated another U.S. miscalculation. The North's leadership was composed of hardened communists who had been fighting for independence for thirty years. They had defeated the French, and their tenacity as both nationalists and communists was formidable. Ho Chi Minh is quoted as saying, "You can kill ten of my men for every one I kill of yours...But even at these odds you will lose and I will win."
The Vietnam War called into question the U.S. Army doctrine. Marine Corps General Victor H. Krulak heavily criticised Westmoreland's attrition strategy, calling it "wasteful of American lives... with small likelihood of a successful outcome." In addition, doubts surfaced about the ability of the military to train foreign forces.
Between 1965 and 1975, the United States spent $111 billion on the war ($686 billion in FY2008 dollars). This resulted in a large federal budget deficit.
More than 3 million Americans served in the Vietnam War, some 1.5 million of whom actually saw combat in Vietnam. James E. Westheider wrote that "At the height of American involvement in 1968, for example, there were 543,000 American military personnel in Vietnam, but only 80,000 were considered combat troops." Conscription in the United States had been controlled by the President since World War II, but ended in 1973."
By war's end, 58,220 American soldiers had been killed, more than 150,000 had been wounded, and at least 21,000 had been permanently disabled. According to Dale Kueter, "Sixty-one percent of those killed were age 21 or younger. Of those killed in combat, 86.3 percent were white, 12.5 percent were black and the remainder from other races." The youngest American KIA in the war was PFC Dan Bullock, who had falsified his birth certificate and enlisted in the US Marines at age 14 and who was killed in combat at age 15. Approximately 830,000 Vietnam veterans suffered symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder. An estimated 125,000 Americans fled to Canada to avoid the Vietnam draft, and approximately 50,000 American servicemen deserted. In 1977, United States President Jimmy Carter granted a full, complete and unconditional pardon to all Vietnam-era draft dodgers. The Vietnam War POW/MIA issue, concerning the fate of U.S. service personnel listed as missing in action, persisted for many years after the war's conclusion.

On 22 June 1941 the Axis invaded the Soviet Union under Operation Barbarossa. The Axis land forces reached Crimea in the autumn, 1941, and overran the area. The only objective not in Axis hands was Sevastopol. Several attempts were made to secure the city in October and November 1941. A major attack was planned for late November, but bad weather and heavy rains delayed the Axis attack until 17 December 1941. Under the command of Erich von Manstein, the Axis forces were unable to capture Sevastopol in the first stage of operations. The Soviets launched an amphibious landing on the Crimean peninsula at Kerch in December 1941, to relieve the siege and force the Axis to divert forces to defend their gains. The operation saved Sevastopol for the time being, but the landing was checked and repulsed in May 1942.
At Sevastopol the Axis opted to conduct a siege until the summer, 1942, at which point they attacked the encircled Soviet forces by land, sea and air. On 2 June 1942, the Axis began their operation, codenamed Störfang (Sturgeon Catch). The Soviet Red Army and Black Sea Fleet held out for weeks under intense Axis bombardment. The German Air Force (Luftwaffe) played a vital part in the siege. The Luftwaffe made up for a shortage of Axis artillery, providing highly effective aerial bombardment in support of the ground forces. Finally, on the 4 July 1942, the remaining Soviet forces surrendered and the Axis seized the port. Both sides had suffered considerable losses during the siege.
With the Soviet forces neutralised, the Axis refocused their attention on the major summer campaign of that year, Operation Blue and the advance to the Caucasus oil fields.
