Canada (
i/ˈkænədə/; French: [ka.na.da]) is a country in the northern part of North America. Its ten provinces and three territories extend from the Atlantic to the Pacific and northward into the Arctic Ocean, covering 9.98 million square kilometres (3.85 million square miles), making it the world's second-largest country by total area and the fourth-largest country by land area. Canada's border with the United States is the world's longest land border. Canada is sparsely populated, the majority of its land territory being dominated by forest and tundra and the Rocky Mountains; about four-fifths of the country's population of 35 million people live near the southern border. The majority of Canada has a cold or severely cold winter climate, but southerly areas are warm in summer.
The land now called Canada has been inhabited for millennia by various Aboriginal peoples. Beginning in the 15th century, British and French colonies were established on the Atlantic coast, with the first establishment of a region called "Canada" occurring in 1537. As a consequence of various conflicts, the United Kingdom gained and lost territories within British North America until left, in the late 18th century, with what mostly geographically comprises Canada today. Pursuant to the British North America Act, on July 1, 1867, the colonies of Canada, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia joined to form the autonomous federal Dominion of Canada. This began an accretion of provinces and territories to the self-governing Dominion to the present ten provinces and three territories forming modern Canada. In 1931, Canada achieved near total independence from the United Kingdom with the Statute of Westminster 1931, and full sovereignty was attained when the Canada Act 1982 removed the last remaining ties of legal dependence on the British parliament.

Toronto is the largest city in Canada and the provincial capital of Ontario. It is located in Southern Ontario on the northwestern shore of Lake Ontario. The history of Toronto began in the late 18th century when the British Crown purchased its land from the Mississaugas of the New Credit. The British established a settlement there, called the Town of York, which its lieutenant governor, John Graves Simcoe, designated as the capital of Upper Canada. The city was ransacked in the Battle of York during the War of 1812. In 1834, York was incorporated as a city and renamed Toronto.
The most important places to visit in Toronto are: Niagara Falls (located an hour and a half away from Toronto, awe-inspiring Niagara Falls attracts visitors from around the world), CN Tower (dominating Toronto's skyline, this communication tower stands at a staggering 1,815 feet. Spectacular Toronto views await you at the top), Old City Hall (an important historic landmark of Toronto. It too nearly 20 years to complete its construction in 1899), Royal Ontario Museum (Canada's largest museum of world culture. You can see impressive artifacts and archeological objects from around the world), Casa Loma (a magnificent castle on a hill in the north end of Toronto. Visitors are treated well in restored rooms and gardens) and many more.

My cross-country adventure concludes in Vancouver, British Columbia - one of my favourite cities in Canada. It's got everything: mountains, nature, restaurants (sushi!), arts, and culture. It's a big city with the friendliest people and a laid-back west coast vibe. Sweden is located in the south of Scandinavia between the North Sea and the East Sea. The Göta Canal connects Kattegatt on the west coast, with the east coast and is the main waterway through Sweden from Gothenburg to Stockholm. From Gothenburg, we travel by boat, the Göta Älv, inland. One remarkable lock after the other opens up huge gates and the inflow of water raises the boat to the next level. The Trollhättan Canal Museum provides a good insight into the construction of the lock system and old drawings show its planning and construction from 1609. It also includes the history of the Göta Canal and how in 1718 Christopher Polhem was commissioned by CharlesThe Twelfth to build a canal. The pathways alongside the canal were once tow paths where oxen pulled the ships along by rope and trees were planted to provide shade to both Man and beast. Our journey leads into the waters of Bottensjön that is connected to Lake Vättern until we finally arrive at the port of Karlsborg. Behind the walls of Karlsborg Fortress are barracks, various buildings and a church. It is a truly massive construction, built in 1809 after Sweden lost Finland to Russia. Located on the idyllic Lovön Island is the royal castle of Drottningholm Slott that is the main residence of the Swedish royal family, the Versailles Of The North. Queen Hedvig Eleonora had this Baroque castle built in 1662 and in 1744 it was presented to Queen Louisa Ulrika as a wedding gift. This classic route from coast to coast has been an amazing experience with the "Blue Ribbon of Sweden" an unforgettable dream!

The city's landmark CN Tower stands in stark contrast to another local icon: The castle-like Casa Loma. Some other famous architectural feats are the Royal Ontario Museum and the Gehry-designed Art Gallery of Ontario.
Kensington Markets is an art-loving, 70s-inspired neighborhood full of shops. Upscale fashion stores surround Dundas Square, the downtown end of Yonge Street. During colder months, the city's huge underground mall, the PATH, offers hours of indoor fun. The Rogers Centre and nearby Hockey Hall of Fame are a must-see for sports fans.
Kids will love Ontario Science Centre, the chipmunks in the Edward Gardens, the Toronto Zoo and Canada's Wonderland.

Riding on horseback for 5 memorable days, we travelled through the majestic back country in Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada. My wife and I joined Banff Trail Riders (www.horseback.com) and filmed the journey from the sky. We rode through the Sundance valley and stopped nightly at rustic cabins along the way... The highlight of the journey was an ascent up to Allenby Pass at nearly 8100 feet. I never thought I'd be riding a horse up the side of a mountain and the memory will last a lifetime.

Vancouver is consistently named as one of the top five worldwide cities for livability and quality of life. It's a coastal seaport city with a metropolitan population of over 2.5 million inhabitants, the third most populous in Canada.
Vancouver is one of the most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities in Canada. 52% of its residents have a first language other than English.
Vancouver is one of Canada's warmest cities in the winter. On average, snow falls on eleven days per year. It's also one of the wettest Canadian cities.
Vancouver is one of Canada's largest industrial centres. Port Metro Vancouver, is Canada's largest and most diversified. While forestry remains its largest industry, Vancouver is well known as an urban centre surrounded by nature, making tourism its second-largest industry. Each year over a million people pass through Vancouver on cruise ship vacations, often bound for Alaska.
Vancouver has one of the largest urban parks in North America, Stanley Park, a 1,001 acre public park that borders the downtown and is almost entirely surrounded by waters of Vancouver Harbour and English Bay. The park is surrounded by the near-century-old Vancouver Seawall, which can draw thousands of residents and visitors to the park every day. The park also features forest trails, beaches, lakes, children's play areas, and the Vancouver Aquarium, among many other attractions. In June, 2014 Stanley Park was named ‘top park in the entire world’ by TripAdvisor.
Major film production studios in Vancouver and Burnaby have turned Greater Vancouver and nearby areas into one of the largest film production centres in North America, earning it the film industry nickname, Hollywood North.
Vancouver has hosted many international conferences and events, including Expo 86, the 2010 Winter Olympics and 2010 Winter Paralympics. In 2014, following thirty years in California, the annual TED conference made Vancouver its indefinite home. Several matches of the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup were played in Vancouver, including the final at BC Place Stadium.
