The Undiscovered

"The Undiscovered" is an alternate history short story by William Sanders that won the Sidewise Award for Alternate History. "The Undiscovered" was originally published in the March 1997 issue of Asimov's and, in addition to its Sidewise Award nomination, was nominated for the Hugo Award, the Nebula Award, and the Theodore Sturgeon Award. The story was subsequently reprinted in The Year's Best Science Fiction: Fifteenth Annual Collection,The Best Alternate History Stories of the 20th Century, and Best of the Best: 20 Years of the Year's Best Science Fiction.

The story is narrated by a Cherokee man in the late 16th century. An English immigrant called the Spear-Shaker has been captured by the narrator's tribe, and is essentially adopted by them. The Spear-Shaker tries to introduce the concept of stage play to the tribe by producing a version of Hamlet for them, but mutual cultural misunderstandings make this very difficult. The story's tone is a comic farce, but the message is pessimistic, seeming to say that genius and hard work guarantee nothing, and that failure and constant alienation may even be the most likely result in some cases.

Easter egg

Easter eggs, also called Paschal eggs, are decorated eggs that are often given to celebrate Easter or springtime. As such, Easter eggs are common during the season of Eastertide (Easter season). The oldest tradition is to use dyed and painted chicken eggs, but a modern custom is to substitute chocolate eggs, or plastic eggs filled with confectionery such as chocolate. Eggs, in general, were a traditional symbol of fertility, and rebirth.

History

The practice of decorating eggshells is ancient, predating Christian traditions. Ostrich eggs with engraved decoration that are 60,000 years old have been found in Africa. Decorated ostrich eggs, and representations of ostrich eggs in gold and silver, were commonly placed in graves of the ancient Sumerians and Egyptians as early as 5,000 years ago.

The Christian custom of the Easter egg, can be traced as far back as the early Christians of Mesopotamia, who stained eggs red in memory of the blood of Christ. The Christian Church officially adopted the custom, regarding the eggs as a symbol of the resurrection. The Roman Ritual, the first edition of which was published in 1610 but which contains texts of much older date, has among the Easter Blessings of Food, along with those for lamb, bread, and new produce, the following blessing for eggs:

Our solar system now is tied for most number of planets around a single star, with the recent discovery of an eighth planet circling Kepler-90, a Sun-like star 2,545 light years from Earth. The planet was discovered in data from NASA’s Kepler space telescope. The newly-discovered Kepler-90i -- a sizzling hot, rocky planet that orbits its star once every 14.4 days -- was found by researchers from Google and The University of Texas at Austin using machine learning. Machine learning is an approach to artificial intelligence in which computers “learn.” In this case, computers learned to identify planets by finding in Kepler data instances where the telescope recorded signals from planets beyond our solar system, known as exoplanets. The planet was discovered in data from NASA’s Kepler Space Telescope. The newly-discovered Kepler-90i – a sizzling hot, rocky planet that orbits its star once every 14.4 days – was found using machine learning from Google. Machine learning is an approach to artificial intelligence in which computers “learn.” In this case, computers learned to identify planets by finding in Kepler data instances where the telescope recorded signals from planets beyond our solar system, known as exoplanets. The discovery came about after researchers Christopher Shallue and Andrew Vanderburg trained a computer to learn how to identify exoplanets in the light readings recorded by Kepler – the miniscule change in brightness captured when a planet passed in front of, or transited, a star. Inspired by the way neurons connect in the human brain, this artificial “neural network” sifted through Kepler data and found weak transit signals from a previously-missed eighth planet orbiting Kepler-90, in the constellation Draco. While machine learning has previously been used in searches of the Kepler database, this research demonstrates that neural networks are a promising tool in finding some of the weakest signals of distant worlds. Other planetary systems probably hold more promise for life than Kepler-90. About 30 percent larger than Earth, Kepler-90i is so close to its star that its average surface temperature is believed to exceed 800 degrees Fahrenheit, on par with Mercury. Its outermost planet, Kepler-90h, orbits at a similar distance to its star as Earth does to the Sun. A lot of you guys have been sending me pictures of giant skeletons lately. Bills channel viewers like Jack Garbutt, Vidal Figueroa, Amar Taha, and Brandon Rhodes have all alerted me to these photos. Most of them show ancient giants being dug up by scientists all over the world. But are these pictures real? Or are they fake. That’s what everyone seems to be asking! The first thing I did, was just do a general search to see how much of this stuff is out there. It wasn’t a truck load, but then it wasn’t just one or two. Now I can’t really tell you whether all of them are fake or real. I can only go with specific pictures one at a time, otherwise I would be just giving you an opinion. First off, let’s just take a look at this picture. This claims to be a photo of an ancient giant that was dug up by the National Geographic Society in India. It was reported in the Hindu Voice Newspaper as real, but it is it? I have the answer right here… so what do you think? Write it down on a piece of paper right now so you can’t lie about it later! Ok here we go. The picture reported in the Indian newspaper as a giant skeleton dug up but the National Geographic Society is… A fake. Shocking… but what I love is the story behind this one. When national geographic got wind of this story, not only did they deny it, but they put their researchers on it and got to the bottom of it. Then they published a big article about how they were the victim of a hoax ( it’s not nice to fool Nat Geo). In their article, Nat Geo traced the photo back to a photoshop contest on a website called worth1000.com. The goal was to come up with the best fake pictures of “Archaeological Anomalies.” this picture, called Giants was created by a photoshop artist using the handle, Ironkite, and it won 3 place in the contest. Ironkite wouldn’t tell Natgeo his real name but he did reveal the secrets of how he created the fake picture. He first started out with ta real picture like this of a mastodon excavation in the United States… He then digitally superimposed a human skeleton over the beast’s remains. After that, he added a man digging…. Now if you look very closely, Ironkite had some problem with the shovel here, so he had to remove part of it. In the end the guy just ends up holding a stick. I guess all the newspapers that published the photo didn’t look close enough to notice that. Ok, so that is all the time I have for this video. Scientists Discover A New Kind Of Fire, Yes Really
Scientists have identified a new kind of fire which burns more cleanly. Scientists have identified a new kind of fire which burns more cleanly. According to a recently published study from the University of Maryland, or UMD, this phenomenon, called a blue whirl, “evolves from a fire whirl and burns with nearly soot-free combustion.” Fire whirls are often vertical funnels of flames that whip up potentially dangerous, debris-carrying winds. They also tend to be yellow in color because a lack of oxygen causes incomplete burning and the creation of soot. A blue flame, on the other hand, reflects “there is enough oxygen for complete combustion, which means less or no soot, and is therefore a cleaner burn.” As a UMD press release states, “The Clark School team initially set out to investigate the combustion and burning dynamics of fire whirls on water.” As they were especially interested in the whirls’ use in cleaning up oil spills, they added liquid fuel to water to create a pool fire. After manipulating the system upward with the help of tubes, the team noticed that the resulting fire whirl eventually turned into “a small, intensely whirling blue flame.” While additional research is needed to determine the applications of this discovery, it could potentially decrease the number of pollutants released into the environment during the cleanup of oil disasters.
