In episode one Rory Stewart tells the story of British interventions in Afghanistan in the 19th century, when the British Empire became obsessed with the idea that their rival, Russia, was considering the invasion of Afghanistan as a staging post for an attack on British India. It was a period of mutual suspicion and paranoia that later became known as "The Great Game". Afghanistan was perceived by Victorian Britain, as it's believed to be today, to be an immediate threat to British national security. In this first film, Rory Stewart tells the story of the decision-making that led to the first British invasion of Afghanistan, and the three Anglo-Afghan wars fought in this era. The Great Game of the 19th Century
The Great Game was an intense rivalry between the British and Russian Empires in Central Asia, beginning in the nineteenth century. British Lord Ellenborough started "The Great Game" on January 12, 1830, with an edict establishing a new trade route from India to Bukhara, using Turkey, Persia and Afghanistan. The aim was to create a buffer against Russia to prevent it from controlling any ports on the Persian Gulf. Meanwhile, Russia wanted to establish a neutral zone in Afghanistan allowing for their use of crucial trade routes.

The Great Game
"The Great Game" (Also called the Tournament of Shadows (Russian: Турниры теней, Turniry Teney) in Russia) was the strategic economic and political rivalry and conflict between the British Empire and the Russian Empire for supremacy in Central Asia at the expense of Afghanistan, Persia and the Central Asian Khanates/Emirates. The classic Great Game period is generally regarded as running approximately from the Russo-Persian Treaty of 1813 to the Anglo-Russian Convention of 1907, in which nations like Emirate of Bukhara fell. A less intensive phase followed the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917, causing some trouble with Persia and Afghanistan until the mid 1920s.
In the post-Second World War post-colonial period, the term has informally continued in its usage to describe the geopolitical machinations of the Great Powers and regional powers as they vie for geopolitical power and influence in the area, especially in Afghanistan and Iran/Persia.
The term "The Great Game" is usually attributed to Arthur Conolly (1807–1842), an intelligence officer of the British East India Company's 6th Bengal Light Cavalry. It was introduced into mainstream consciousness by British novelist Rudyard Kipling in his novel Kim (1901).

The Great Game of the 19th Century The Great Game was an intense rivalry between the British and Russian Empires in Central Asia, beginning in the nineteenth century. British Lord Ellenborough started "The Great Game" on January 12, 1830, with an edict establishing a new trade route from India to Bukhara, using Turkey, Persia and Afghanistan. The aim was to create a buffer against Russia to prevent it from controlling any ports on the Persian Gulf. A playthrough of Activision's 1996 FMV graphic adventure for Dos and Windows 95 PCs, Spycraft: The Great Game. Spycraft is an excellent adventure for those who want their games with a serious, adult tone without being vulgar, or to not pander and hand-hold throughout. It's and extremely difficult game, but only because it fully expects you to do the mental heavy lifting yourself. No convenient exposition that makes life easy for the player anywhere here. I've made an effort to avoid swearing in recent videos but I felt like I couldn't avoid it here, so this is a second warning in case you're watching somewhere that it might be an issue.
I get a little ranty in the third section. It's the weakest part in terms of stating actual facts but I felt compelled to include it. This was a difficult script to write. Probably more than any other so far. I'm mostly happy with it.
The title is a little click-baity. If you haven't played the game then it's still (probably) worth your time. Watch the first few minutes if you're on the fence before deciding.

A playthrough of Activision's 1996 FMV graphic adventure for Dos and Windows 95 PCs, Spycraft: The Great Game.
Spycraft is an excellent adventure for those who want their games with a serious, adult tone without being vulgar, or to not pander and hand-hold throughout. It's and extremely difficult game, but only because it fully expects you to do the mental heavy lifting yourself. No convenient exposition that makes life easy for the player anywhere here. It's pretty logical, though, and I promise it will leave you feeling quite self-satisfied if you manage to finish it without cheating.
The different endings can be found at 3:09:41, following the main credits that finish off the main playthrough segment. I'd recommend watching this video at the 360p setting instead of in HD. The scanlines got butchered in the YouTube encoding, and the picture looks far better at a lower resolution. You don't gain anything from the 60fps since all of the in-game video is encoded at 15fps, and the text is still perfectly readable at the lower resolution, just softer around the edges.
The FMV is more window dressing than anything else - though it's 3 CDs of video, they don't dominate the game play. The videos merely replace the standard 2D sprites gesturing wildly as actors read their lines. The video is excellent at conveying the drama and gravity of the international espionage plot, though. It's all well produced, of very high quality (for 1996, at least), and stars a number of fairly high profile actors, and convincingly portrays Russia, Italy, England, and wherever else the espionage/presidential assassination/convoluted spy thriller plot line takes you.
I just hope you like to read. This is not 007 style spying. I mean, sure, you do sometimes shoot at people, but the majority of the game is spent doing research and connecting the dots between seemingly unrelated elements to reveal the next plot leg. I loved it, but I suspect that this is probably an acquired taste. The challenge of being a "spy" will probably alienate quite a few people.

While unveiling its long-awaited Afghanistan strategy, the US embraced India and dropped Pakistan as its ally.
Pakistan was infuriated when US President Trump asked India to deepen its economic relations with Afghanistan. Pakistan interprets India’s engagement in Afghanistan as a direct threat to Pakistan. This is a misconception caused by the lack of trust between the two countries. “Pakistan should not object to our relationship with India. We assure that Kabul-New Delhi relations will not harm Islamabad,” said Omar Zakhilwal, the Afghan ambassador to Pakistan.
In October, a mega trade and investment show was held in New Delhi. The US-sponsored event aimed at better regional integration and a strengthening of the economic nexus between India and Afghanistan. For Pakistan, this means the weakening of its economic leverage over Afghanistan.

Sure, the game isn’t perfect, but it is fun as hell. Both fans and those new to it will enjoy the seemingly complex set of motions that come from the rather simple set of controls provided in the game ... The local multiplayer is also a great experience, which allows novices to participate on equal footing, making this game great for a lazy competition between friends ... Despite a few minor glitches, the game ticks all the right boxes....
