Substance abuse, also known as drug abuse, is a patterned use of a drug in which the user consumes the substance in amounts or with methods which are harmful to themselves or others, and is a form of substance-related disorder. Widely differing definitions of drug abuse are used in public health, medical and criminal justice contexts.
The exact cause of substance abuse is not clear, with theories including: a genetic disposition; learned from others - or a habit which if addiction develops, manifests as a chronic debilitating disease.
Drugs most often associated with this term include: alcohol, substituted amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines (particularly alprazolam, lorazepam, diazepam and clonazepam), cocaine, methaqualone, cannabis and opioids.
In some cases criminal or anti-social behavior occurs when the person is under the influence of a drug, and long term personality changes in individuals may occur as well. In addition to possible physical, social, and psychological harm, use of some drugs may also lead to criminal penalties, although these vary widely depending on the local jurisdiction.
Khan Academy is a non-profit educational organization created in 2006 by educator Salman Khan with the aim of providing a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere. The organization produces short lectures in the form of YouTube videos. In addition to micro lectures, the organization's website features practice exercises and tools for educators. All resources are available for free to anyone around the world. The main language of the website is English, but the content is also available in other languages.
The founder of the organization, Salman Khan, was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States to immigrant parents from Bangladesh and India. After earning three degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (a BS in mathematics, a BS in electrical engineering and computer science, and an MEng in electrical engineering and computer science), he pursued an MBA from Harvard Business School.
In late 2004, Khan began tutoring his cousin Nadia who needed help with math using Yahoo!'s Doodle notepad. When other relatives and friends sought similar help, he decided that it would be more practical to distribute the tutorials on YouTube. The videos' popularity and the testimonials of appreciative students prompted Khan to quit his job in finance as a hedge fund analyst at Connective Capital Management in 2009, and focus on the tutorials (then released under the moniker "Khan Academy") full-time.
A high school (also secondary school, senior school, secondary college) is a school that provides adolescents with part or all of their secondary education. It may come after primary school or middle school and be followed by higher education or vocational training.
The term "high school" originated in Scotland, with the world's oldest high school being Edinburgh's Royal High School from 1505. The Royal High School was used as a model for the first public high school in the United States, Boston Latin School founded in Boston, Massachusetts.
The precise stage of schooling provided by a high school differs from country to country, and may vary within the same jurisdiction. In all of New Zealand and Malaysia, along with most of Britain and parts of Australia, Bangladesh and Canada, high school means the same thing as secondary school, but instead of starting in 9th grade, these "secondary schools" begin at ages 11 or 12.
In Australia, high school is a secondary school, from Year 7 or Year 8 through to Year 12, varying from state to state. High school immediately follows primary (elementary) school; therefore, a Year-7 Australian high-school student is sometimes as young as 12. In Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory, the term "high school" generally refers to Years 7–10, whereas the term "College" is used for Years 11–12. In Victoria the term "secondary college" has largely replaced the term "high school" following the reforms of the Labor Government in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Some schools have retained the name "high school" (such as Melbourne High School) and many have now dropped the "secondary" and are simply known as "college".

When it comes to addressing substance abuse or addiction, one will be more motivated to change when it's their own idea. Motivation occurs when there is a discrepancy between "where I am" versus "where I want to be." This video provides an overview of how the PREVENT! program uses motivational intervention to help substance abuse clients become motivated for change. Learn more at www.jimsavage.net

919-538-7216 to book Darryl Rodgers as a speaker. On May 29th 2014 my oldest son, Chase, died in a wreck. Police found marijuana in the purse of the young lady who was driving his car. They also found a THC metabolite in her bloodstream. (THC is the active ingredient in marijuana). Chase was twenty years old. Seven months after the wreck and only a few weeks prior to what would have been her first court appearance, the young woman who was driving took her own life. She set herself on fire. It is tragic that we lost both of these talented young people in their prime. My name is Darryl Rodgers. I am Chase’s dad. I speak at a variety of venues in an effort to get my son's story out there. I especially look for opportunities to speak to young people in schools, churches, ...
The Partnership at Drugfree.org has developed a teen-oriented substance abuse prevention education presentation to teach teens (15-19 years old) about the realities and consequences of substance use. wreckED encourages teens to think more introspectively about their own and their friends' behavior regarding alcohol and other drugs, and to consider the associated consequences of getting involved. In addition to getting attendees to take a closer look at themselves, the presentation will also motivate them to be proactive in "looking out" for their friends who may be engaging in unhealthy behaviors.

Considerable progress has been made toward developing effective approaches to the prevention of tobacco, alcohol, and illicit drug use. Universal school-based approaches have received considerable attention since schools have traditionally provide a logical locus for reaching a large number of adolescents in a structured setting. The Life Skills Training (LST) approach has been extensively tested and is one of the most widely disseminated evidence-based prevention programs. However, schools have been slow to adopt evidence-based approaches such LST. Gilbert Botvin, professor of public health and psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medical College, presents an overview of advances in drug abuse prevention, findings from two decades of research testing the LST approach, and a discussion of the many...
