West Coast clinch finals berth

The Eagles have upset Adelaide and broken Demons hearts after securing a spot in the finals, beating West Coast by 29 points in the final AFL game at Subiaco Oval.

As this crazy AFL season almost demanded, the make-up of the top eight came down to the last home and away game; to the last five minutes. Lewis Jetta and Jack Darling kicked the game's last two goals to give the Eagles the margin they needed. They finished 0.5 per cent in percentage ahead of the unlucky Melbourne.

Midway through the third term, when Mark LeCras kicked his second goal for the quarter, the Eagles led Adelaide by 41 points and were only one more goal away from overtaking Essendon and finishing in seventh. It wouldn't surprise anyone that former Hawthorn champion Sam Mitchell was leading the way for his new side and he finished the game with 34 disposals.

The win earned West Coast an elimination final spot against Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval.

In the scheme of things, Sunday's result meant little as far as Adelaide's finals campaign is concerned. They claimed their second McLelland Trophy with 15.5 wins, having won their first in 2005.

That year they won it with a tight victory over West Coast in Perth. This year they go into the finals with two consecutive losses, having fallen three points short against Sydney at home in round 22.

Geelong's win over Greater Western Sydney on Saturday night had already assured the Crows the minor premiership. And Richmond's win over St Kilda means the Crows will host Greater Western Sydney in a qualifying final.

Adelaide's assured spot on top of the ladder before the start of the round may have explained the start the Crows produced. At quarter-time, West Coast led Adelaide by 18 points. And more importantly had already displaced Melbourne in eighth place on the AFL ladder.

The Eagles were showing much greater intent having laid 16 tackles compared to the Crows' five. Clearly the mindset of the players from the respective teams was much different.

The Crows fought back into the game on the backs of Brad (43 possessions) and Matt Crouch (44), who enter the finals in outstanding form.

If it weren't for Rory Sloane's third term, the Eagles would have won by enough to overtake the Bombers. It would have been a tough game for Demons players and supporters to have watched.

As the Crows kicked into gear in the second half, you could almost hear the cheers coming across the Nullarbor. West Coast led by 17 points at half-time, but that wasn't enough for them to play finals.

The side-story to this clash was whether Josh Kennedy could claim a third consecutive Coleman Medal. He needed five goals but got only one, and Sydney's Lance Franklin claimed the honour for season 2017.
