Melbourne Cup: Punter turns $10 into $1 million

A big win on the back of a Tabcorp promotion gave Dominic from Mill Park something else to celebrate as his horse, Rekindling, came out on top.

The epic win was due to a contest open to all TAB account holders who placed a bet on the early Cup Day races.

The 45-year-old was drawn at random after placing $5 each way on Land of Plenty, which ran second in race three.

He was contacted by TAB to provide his tip, Rekindling at a $15 chance.

"I was laying on the couch about to have a few bets when I got the call that I won the draw," he said after the win.

"I was actually home alone so I had to call a few mates who rushed over to watch with me."

One of those friends started to film Mr Clemente as Johannes Vermeer led the pack with 200 metres to go.

His calls of "Get up 'kindling, come on baby" escalated to jumping and screaming as his horse crossed the finish line.

His friend can be heard behind the camera saying: "I can't believe this mate".

"I was just numb," Mr Clemente said.

"It's a surreal feeling and I'm still in shock. I chose Rekindling because I liked its form overseas and its draw, but I never could have imagined this."

Mr Clemente, a labourer, said the win hadn't sunken in yet, but he'd stocked up on "a bit of grog and a bit of grub" for Tuesday night.

He'd already called his boss, who gave him Wednesday morning off to do media interviews.

"He'd seen me on the news so he was pretty understanding," Mr Clemente said.

"He was just bummed that I didn't give him the tip for the horse."
