Vintage Vixens - The Madness of Dancing Queen Dewi Sukarno

Indonesia’s most famous and controversial women must be the beautiful but very idiosyncratic Dewi Sukarno.

Born Naoko Nemoto in Japan, she was working days in an insurance company and nights as a hostess at the Kokusai Club in Akasaka, a place for foreign VIPs. It was there that a fateful meeting with a powerful world leader changed her life.

In 1962, at the tender age of 19, she left Japan to become the third of the nine wives of Achmed Sukarno, the president of The Republic of Indonesia. Her full married name was Ratna Sari Dewi Sukarno.

Always a colorful character, Dewi Sukarno exploded in sensational fashion in 1992 when she “glassed” fellow international socialite and heiress Minnie Osmeña at a party in Aspen, Colorado, and had to do jail time of 60 days!

Then a year later, in 1993, at the ripe old age of 53, she published a book of photos, many of them nude.

The book was condemned in the (mostly) Islamic country Indonesia for "violating eastern norms and insulting Indonesia's dignity" and was banned by the Attorney-General's office. Several years later, an Indonesian magazine published some photos from the book without permission, and controversy rose again.

Today the book is out of print and a highly valued collectors’ item.

Art of the Book - Christopher J. Koch's "The Year of Living Dangerously"

Brought to life in Peter Weir's vibrant athmospheric 1982 film version starring a young Mel Gibson and a sultry  Sigourney Weaver, here's the original source novel set in the simmering dangerous tropics during the period of intense turbulent political turmoil in the mid-60s.

An Amazon reviewer sums this tome up well saying ....
You will be transported to the steaminess of the equator. This is a wonderful story full of unique characters in the midst of one of the most turbulent times in Indonesia.

Sukarno's Indonesia is an edgy place in 1965 and the group of western journalists Koch assembles as his main characters can sense the tragedy ready to erupt. Guy Hamilton, a television correspondent, is joined by Billy Kwan, a Chinese-Australian cameraman who determines that he should "assist" Hamilton. Theirs is an uneasy friendship, enhanced by the remaining cast of characters, whom you will meet when you read the book.

Much is made of the fact that Billy is a dwarf, but that is what makes him so interesting. It enables him to get away with things typically sized people would not. He is a fascinating, multidimensional character who is far more an intellectual than people give him credit for, much more political than casual acquaintances would guess, and passionate about Indonesia, something he keeps mostly to himself.

Koch weaves a great tale here: part mystery, part political espionage thriller, a little bit of romance (but not enough to put you off), and all of it packed into 300 pages of Indonesian atmosphere.

It is a carefully crafted masterpiece of storytelling that I highly recommend. While readily available on shelves in Australian bookstores, it is likely less well known in the States.

Too bad, Koch's books are worth every penny.

Art of the Poster - Peter Weir's "The Year of Living Dangerously" (1982)

Christopher J. Koch's novel is brilliantly brought to life in Peter Weir's vibrant, athmospheric 1982 film version.

Starring a young Mel Gibson (who puts in a terrific and restrained performance) and a sultry Sigourney Weaver, it's a moving piece set in the simmering shimmering oppresive tropics of a dangerous Indonesia during the period of intense turbulent political turmoil there in the mid-60s.

Man, Weaver was really at her hottest here as, of all things a sensual, sexy, svelte, naughty British diplomat (as if such things ever exist in real life!)
