The Video - The Libertines' "Gunga Din"

the mirror is fucking ugly and I'm sick and tired of looking at him ...

A great track here from the 'thought they were dead' vault!

Yap. it seems cuddly Carl and prickly Pete have put aside a few truckloads of animosity and the mighty Libertines have reformed. And they've come up with the optimistically titled "Anthems for Doomed Youth".

Their first album in over a decade is, surprisingly, only their third studio album.
And pretty fucking good it is too.

Lotsa literary motifs in the thing with the likes of  "Anthem for Doomed Youth" and "Gunga Din" referencing works by Owen and Kipling.

Speaking of which, here's the party-tastic video for the lead single "Gunga Din" - the vibrant ode to a couple of fucked-up 'party animals'.

Lead singers Pete Doherty and Carl Barat, through the protagonists here, apparently muse upon some of their well known self-destructive activities in the past - having dalliances with heroin, other drugs, booze, ditzy supermodels, other ditzy chicks and whatever the fuck else, while planning to kill each other! - before reaching the realization that it’s time to make a change.

What are you doing, you stupid fucking idiot? Wake up! --- indeed!

The title and key lines of the chorus are derived from Rudyard Kipling’s 1892 poem of the same name.

Suitably enough then, the video was shot in the infamous Walking Street - the main drag in the scandlous sin-city of Pattaya. A long street chock full for go-go bars and all forms other naughty to preverse delights.

Seems the lads had a fun night, getting wasted and enjoying the, erm ... scenery! ... Or, as it's known universally, acting like your typical gang of boorish Brit assholes!

How much did they have to pay that Thai cop to show them around?

The  vid was directed by the band's longtime photographer Roger Sargent.

Art of the Mag - Bad Girl Gone Badder

barbarapaytonconfidential.jpg

Yap, when it comes to train wrecks, few hold a candle to the ravishing, and later ravaged, Barbara Payton.

A gorgeous, sexy, pouty-lipped blonde who starred alongside James Cagney in Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye and Lloyd Bridges in the classic noir Trapped, her real life was not only stranger, but more dramatic and seamier than any fiction she starred in.

Affairs with actors to producers to shrinks to pimps; violent, troubled marriages to Tom Neal (star of the seminal sleazy noir Detour who later served time for offing his third wife) and Franchot Tone (whom Neal memorably brawled with); a notorious incident with Lana Turner and Ava Gardner during which an enraged Frank Sinatra walked in  .... shoplifting, prostitution (she was arrested for hooking, in a bar on Sunset Boulevard) and loads of drinking - the gal did it all .. and then some!

Years of hard drinking and hard living ultimately destroyed her both physically and emotionally, leaving her dead from heart and liver failure, in May, 1967. She was only 39.
