What could a businessman ever want more than to have us sucking in his store?
With its righteous disdain for capitalism and the almighty dollar, Repeater's themes update Gang of Four's Solid Gold. Lines/slogans like "When I need something, I reach out and grab it," and "You are not what you own," bear this out.
Repeater honestly gets a little stifling in its unrelenting conviction and grandstanding. It's not too difficult to see why the band was allegedly lacking a sense of humor at this stage; they could have been yelling about filing their taxes, after all.
The title makes sense, if only by mistake. But -- and that's a big but -- Repeater nearly matches the early EPs with its musical invention and skill, spitting out another serving of excellence, making the finger-pointing a little easier to digest.
Few rhythm sections of the time had the great interplay of Joe Lally and Brendan Canty. Likewise, the guitar playing and interaction of Ian MacKaye and Guy Picciotto almost always get overlooked, thanks to all the other subjects brought up when the band is talked about. A guitar magazine even rated Repeater as one of the best guitar records of the '90s, and rightfully so. Anemic revs spiked by pig squeals (or is it a screeching train?) highlight the title track, one of the band's finest moments.
As always, MacKaye and Picciotto's noise-terrorism-as-guitar-joust avoids flashiness, used as much as rhythm as punctuation device. Sharp, angular, jagged, and precise. Other gnarling highlights include the preachy "Styrofoam," the late-breaking "Sieve-Fisted Find," and the somewhat ironic "Merchandise," which skewers Mr. Business Owner by asking, "What could a businessman ever want more than to have us sucking in his store?" Not everyone can do mail order, guys.

Initially the release was going to be a double CD featuring one song from every band (50) on the label, but that idea grew to include a 100+ page booklet that would include photos and text about the bands and the history of the label. Later a third CD was added, this one featuring unreleased or rare material from the Dischord vaults, as well as some CD-ROM video files of archival footage of performances from some of the early bands.
A whopping 73 songs here from various artists including The Teen Idols, Minor Threat, Gray Matter, Beefeater, The Snakes, Slant 6, Shudder To Think, Ignition and many more.

A hard to find album from Embrace. Don't worry it's not the whinging Oasis-like Britpop band Embrace, but the Washington, D.C punk band Ian MacKaye was in after Minor Threat and before Fugazi.
Embrace was a short-lived post-hardcore band from Washington, D.C., which lasted from the summer of 1985 to the spring of 1986 and was one of the first bands to be dubbed in the press as emotive hardcore, though the members had rejected the term since its creation.
The band included Ian MacKaye of Minor Threat with three former members of his brother Alec's band The Faith: guitarist Michael Hampton, drummer Ivor Hanson, and bassist Chris Bald. The only recording released by the quartet was their self-titled album Embrace.

Following the breakup of Embrace, MacKaye rejoined former Minor Threat drummer Jeff Nelson to form Egg Hunt. Bald moved on to the band Ignition, and drummer Ivor Hanson paired up with Hampton again in 1992 for Manifesto.

The LP was compiled from the only two studio sessions the band recorded. The first eleven tracks were laid down in November 1985, and the other three were done in February 1986. All of the songs were recorded at Inner Ear Studios and featured the same lineup.
Originally released on cassette tape and vinyl, it was released on CD in 1992 as Dischord number 24CD. In May 2002, the CD was re-mastered with two extra tracks, previously unreleased alternate versions of "Money" and "Dance of Days" taken from the first recording session.

Fugazi formed in Washington, D.C. in 1987 and the band's continual members were guitarists and vocalists Ian MacKaye and Guy Picciotto, bassist Joe Lally and drummer Brendan Canty. Noted for their ethical stance and manner of business practice, the band experienced commercial success during the 1990s while remaining on their independent record label, Dischord Records.
Fugazi have been on hiatus since 2002.
