Torture

Torture (from the Latin tortus, “twisted") is the act of deliberately inflicting physical or psychological pain on an organism in order to fulfil some desire of the torturer or compel some action from the victim. Torture, by definition, is a knowing and intentional act; deeds which unknowingly or negligently inflict pain without a specific intent to do so are not typically considered torture.

Torture has been carried out or sanctioned by individuals, groups, and states throughout history from ancient times to modern day, and forms of torture can vary greatly in duration from only a few minutes to several days or longer. Reasons for torture can include punishment, revenge, political re-education, deterrence, interrogation or coercion of the victim or a third party, or simply the sadistic gratification of those carrying out or observing the torture. The need to torture another is thought to be the result of internal psychological pressure in the psyche of the torturer. The torturer may or may not intend to kill or injure the victim, but sometimes torture is deliberately fatal and can precede a murder or serve as a form of capital punishment. In other cases, the torturer may be indifferent to the condition of the victim. Alternatively, some forms of torture are designed to inflict psychological pain or leave as little physical injury or evidence as possible while achieving the same psychological devastation. Depending on the aim, even a form of torture that is intentionally fatal may be prolonged to allow the victim to suffer as long as possible (such as half-hanging).

The Jackson 5

The Jackson 5 or Jackson Five; later known as The Jacksons is an American popular music family group from Gary, Indiana. Formed in 1964 under the name the Jackson Brothers, the founding members were Jackie, Tito and Jermaine. Marlon and Michael would later join, and the band's name would be changed to The Jackson 5. After participating in talent shows and the chitlin' circuit, they entered the professional music scene in 1967 as The Jackson Five, signing with Steeltown Records and releasing two singles. In 1969, they left Steeltown Records in order to sign with Motown.

The Jackson 5 is one of the first groups of black American performers to attain a crossover following, preceded by the Supremes, the Four Tops and the Temptations. Scoring 17 top forty singles on the Hot 100, after continuing with further hits such as "Never Can Say Goodbye" and "Dancing Machine", most of the group with the exception of Jermaine, left Motown for Epic Records in 1975, where, with brother Randy taking Jermaine's place, they released five albums between 1976 and 1981, including the hit albums, Destiny (1978) and Triumph (1980) and the hit singles, "Enjoy Yourself", "Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)" and "Can You Feel It." In 1983, Jermaine reunited with the band to perform on Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever and subsequently released the Victory album the following year. After the end of their tour to promote the album, Michael Jackson and Marlon Jackson promptly left the group. The remaining four released the poorly received 2300 Jackson Street album in 1989 before being dropped from their label.

Torture devices throughout history were shockingly cruel, we gathered a list of the 13 most unbelievable torture devices. Subscribe for weekly wacky videos and learn interesting facts about the world with awesome top 10 lists and other amazing videos. 7 - Iron Maiden - The iron maiden was a Germanic torture device that originated at some point during the Middle Ages. It was made of iron and resembled an Egyptian sarcophagus. It consisted of two halves hinged together, with spikes covering the interior of the cast. Reports vary as to whether a person was placed inside and the two halves forced together to have the victim bleed to death, or the person was placed inside with no room to move without impaling themselves on the spikes, as a form of sleep deprivation. Either way it was not a pleasant experience. 6 - Coffin Torture - The practice of Coffin Torture first became popular during the Middle Ages. The “coffin” was fashioned out of iron in the general shape of a human body, and was a claustrophobics worst nightmare. The victim would be placed inside the form fitting device, which had barely enough room to breathe. How long the person spent in the coffin was commensurate with the crime that was committed. More serious crimes, lack blasphemy, were punishable by death. And as if the coffin wasn’t bad enough, torturers would often place the coffin outside in the hot sun, where animals could also come and sample the incapacitated victim, or place it in the town square where passersby could mock and throw stones at the victim, literally adding insult to injury. 5 - Rat Torture - Using rats as torture device started in the Elizabethan era, when prisoners would be thrown into cells below the Tower of London, and hungry rats would tear their flesh right off their bones. Another form of rat torture involved placing rats on top of a victim’s naked stomach, covering them in a large bowl, and then heating the exterior of the bowl with hot rocks, so that the rats would literally eat their way through the victim to escape the heat. Yet another form, called the “Recto-scope” involved inserting a rat into the victims’ anus, by way of a tube. 4 - Heretics Fork - The Heretics Fork was a torture device which consisted of a metal bar with two pronged forks at either end. One end of the fork was placed under the victim’s chin and the other above the breast bone. It was then secured tightly with a leather strap around the person’s neck. The victim was then suspended in air with their head pitched back, so as to avoid contact with the fork. This punishment made it virtually impossible for the victim to sleep, because as soon as their head dropped, the fork would puncture either their chest or throat, causing immense pain. People would literally be forced to stay awake for days, which usually aided the inquisitor in collecting a confession during an inquisition. 3 - Saw Torture - Cases of Saw Torture, or death by sawing, can be found throughout history, from all over the world. It generally refers to the act of sawing a living person in half, either horizontally, as in decapitation, or vertically, either from the skull down or the groin up. One case involving one of Jesus’s apostles, Simon the Zealot, describes how the victim was hung upside down by his feet and the saw blade placed between his splayed legs as the sawing then commenced. Other cases describe sawing a person in half at the waist. 2 - The Rack - The rack is a complex torture device consisting of a rectangular table and a roller at one or both ends. Depending on the configuration, the victim’s hands or legs, or both, could be secured to the rollers. The torturer would then begin to slowly turn the rollers, which would in turn pull the arms and or legs of the victim, literally stretching them out until their joints dislocated and the muscles were ripped off the bone. In addition, while the victim was being stretched, the torcher would often apply hot torches or wax to the victim’s flanks, or tear out the nails of their fingers or toes. 1 - The Head Crusher - The head crusher was a medieval torture device developed in Germany in the early 1500’s. This device featured a fixed metal plate that sat below the victims jaw and helmet that was connected to a frame by a giant screw, thus creating a giant vice. The victim would be fitted into the device and then the torturer would slowly turn the screw, forcing the helmet down on the victims head. The victims teeth, jaw, and facial bones would crack, their eyes would pop out of their sockets, and the skull would eventually be crushed, resulting in a slow and extremely painful death.

Under President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, Egypt’s regular police and National Security officers routinely torture political detainees with techniques including beatings, electric shocks, stress positions, and sometimes rape. Widespread and systematic torture by the security forces probably amounts to a crime against humanity. Prosecutors typically ignore complaints from detainees about ill-treatment and sometimes threaten them with torture, creating an environment of almost total impunity, Human Rights Watch said.
