Intermountain West
The Intermountain West, or Intermountain Region, is a geographic and geological region of the Western United States. It is located between the Rocky Mountains on the east and the Cascade Range and Sierra Nevada on the west.
Topography
The Intermountain West has a basin and range and plateau topography. Some of the region's rivers reach the Pacific Ocean, such as the Columbia River and Colorado River. Other regional rivers and streams are in endorheic basins and cannot reach the sea, such as the Walker River and Owens River. These flow into brackish or seasonally dry lakes or desert sinks.

Climate
The climate of the Intermountain Region is affected by location and elevation. The sub-regions are in rain shadows from the Cascade or Sierra Nevada ranges that block precipitation from Pacific storms. The winter weather depends on latitude. In the southern portion, winters are shorter, warmer and have less winter precipitation and snow. In the northern portion, winters are cold and moist. All areas have hot summers. North American Monsoon storms can occur in the region during the mid-summer, coming northeast from the Pacific Ocean and Mexican Plateau.

West
West is a noun, adjective, or adverb indicating direction or geography. West is one of the four cardinal directions or compass points. It is the opposite of east and is perpendicular to north and south.
Etymology
The word "West" is a Germanic word passed into some Romance languages (ouest in French, oest in Catalan, ovest in Italian, oeste in Spanish and Portuguese). As is apparent in the Gothic term vasi (Visigoths), it stems from the same Indo-European root that gave the Sanskrit vas-ati (night) and vesper (evening) in Latin.
Navigation
To go west using a compass for navigation, one needs to set a bearing or azimuth of 270°.
West is the direction opposite that of the Earth's rotation on its axis, and is therefore the general direction towards which the Sun appears to constantly progress and eventually set.
Moving continuously west is following a circle of latitude.
Cultural
The phrase "the West" is often spoken in reference to the Western world, which includes Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the European Union, and the United States of America.

The Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad (reporting mark DRGW), often shortened to Rio Grande or D&RGW;, formerly the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad, was a U.S. railroad company. The railroad started as a narrow gauge line running south from Denver, Colorado in 1870. It served mainly as a transcontinental bridge line between Denver, and Salt Lake City, Utah. The Rio Grande was also a major origin of coal and mineral traffic.
In 1988, the Rio Grande's parent corporation, Rio Grande Industries, purchased Southern Pacific Transportation Company, and as the result of a merger, the larger Southern Pacific Railroad name was chosen for identity. Today, most former D&RGW; main lines are owned and operated by the Union Pacific Railroad; several branch lines are now operated as heritage railways by various companies.
The Rio Grande was the epitome of mountain railroading, with a motto of Through the Rockies, not around them and later Main line through the Rockies, both referring to the Rocky Mountains. The D&RGW; operated the highest mainline rail line in the United States, over the 10,240 feet (3,120 m) Tennessee Pass in Colorado, and the famed routes through the Moffat Tunnel and the Royal Gorge. Though most are familiar with the large populations of monarchs in the eastern US that travel to Mexico each fall, monarchs in the western US – including those that migrate annually to the California Coast – have received far less attention. In the western US, the Xerces Society is working to identify, protect, manage, and restore monarch breeding and overwintering habitat through conducting and engaging citizen scientists in applied research, developing habitat management technical guidance, and advocacy. This webinar will provide an overview of the biology, life history, and conservation status of monarchs in the western US, including factors that may be contributing to the observed population decline at California overwintering sites. The webinar will also review current conservation efforts of the Xerces Society and partners, including habitat management and enhancement efforts, applied research, and citizen science programs in monarch natal, migratory, and overwintering habitats of the West.
Sarina Jepsen directs the Xerces Society’s Endangered Species Program, where she works on the conservation of monarch butterflies, bumble bees, freshwater mussels, and other at-risk invertebrate species. Since 2007 she has developed, implemented an overseen numerous projects that address the conservation of monarch butterflies in natal, migratory and overwintering habitats of the western US. She has co-authored many publications about monarch butterflies including the report Conservation Status and Ecology of the Monarch Butterfly in the United States and the book chapter Understanding and Conserving the Western North American Monarch Population. She serves as Deputy Chair of the IUCN Bumblebee Specialist Group, where she works with bumble bee experts to evaluate the conservation status of bumble bees worldwide.

The Markakol State Nature Reserve was opened on August 4, 1976 in Kurchum district of East Kazakhstan province in order to preserve unique Lake Markakol and its surrounding landscape.
The area of the reserve is 75,048 hectares, much of it (46,045 ha) accounts for the waters of Lake Markakol.
Markakol is the largest water reservoir in the Altai, located in the beautiful intermountain basin at an altitude of 1500 m above sea level. The lake has an elongated oval shape and extends from north-east to south-west. Its length is 38 km, the maximum width is 19 km, the length of the coastline is 106 km, depth - up to 24-27 m (average 14.3 m).
The lake’s basin is formed by mountain ranges of Kurchum - from north and west, Azutau - from south and east, Sorvenkov belok - from the north-east. The ridges have a height of 2000- 3000 m above sea level. 95 different streams run into Markakol and only one river - the Kaldzhir, the main tributary of the Black Irtysh, flows out of it.
The reserve’s flora is rich in healing plant species. There are a lot of fodder, medical, food, honey, technical, essential oil plants here. The Red Book plants that grow here and are protected and studied are Plainstrider snow, Siberian adder’s fern, rapontikum carthamoides (maraf root), peony steppe, clublike moss, Rhodiola rosea (golden root), Altai rhubarb, tulip heteropetalous, parry stemless. The flora of the reserve has a lot of valuable medicinal species: particularly noteworthy is maral root and golden root, hedysarum, peony root and peony steppe, fine-leaved saxifrage, golden thoroughwax, oregano, St. John’s wort, blueberries, cranberries, rose hips.
The fauna of the park is represented by more than 250 species of birds. Most numerous nesting waterfowl is tufted duck and goldeneye, gadwall and wigeon, common mallard, merganser, pochard, ruddy shelduck and teal; rare is garganey, shoveler, coot, black-throated diver, pintail and red-breasted merganser.
Of birds of prey in the reserve noteworthy are 24 species,
11 species of which nest here. This is a hobby, kestrel, hen harrier, red kite, white-tailed eagle, golden eagle, buzzard, honey buzzard, osprey, hawks - goshawk and sparrowhawk. Scops owl, long-eared owls and marsh, forest owl, Ural owl, barred owl, golden eagle, white-tailed eagle, owl and gray crane nests in the reserve. Altai snowcock can also be met here. Among the 58 species of mammals inhabiting the reserve, the prevailing are representatives of the taiga and alpine regions. It is home to the ungulates - deer, elk, ibex, to predators - brown bear, wolf, fox, Siberian lynx, wolverine, sable, ermine, mountain weasel, columns, steppe polecat, mink,
weasel, otter.
Occasional here is a snow leopard. Insect-eaters that one can find here are Altai mole, water shrew, and several species of shrews, bats - water bat, Myotis Brandt, brown long-eared bat, northern bat, of lagomorphs - hare and Altai pika.
Typical are members of the order of squirret - Altai squirrel, gray marmot, chipmunk, small rodents, including birch mouse Strautman.
In the waters of Lake Markakol one can find grayling, trout, gudgeon and lake uskuch (flax).

Scops owl, long-eared owls and marsh, forest owl, Ural owl, barred owl, golden eagle, white-tailed eagle, owl and gray crane nests in the reserve. Altai snowcock can also be met here. Among the 58 species of mammals inhabiting the reserve, the prevailing are representatives of the taiga and alpine regions. It is home to the ungulates - deer, elk, ibex, to predators - brown bear, wolf, fox, Siberian lynx, wolverine, sable, ermine, mountain weasel, columns, steppe polecat, mink,
weasel, otter.
Occasional here is a snow leopard. Insect-eaters that one can find here are Altai mole, water shrew, and several species of shrews, bats - water bat, Myotis Brandt, brown long-eared bat, northern bat, of lagomorphs - hare and Altai pika.
Typical are members of the order of squirret - Altai squirrel, gray marmot, chipmunk, small rodents, including birch mouse Strautman.
In the waters of Lake Markakol one can find grayling, trout, gudgeon and lake uskuch (flax).

The lands managed by the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest have a diverse history. For perhaps 15,000 years this area was home to Native Americans who made their living by hunting and gathering, with one known brief episode of horticulture.
By the time of white settlement in this area, the ancestors of the first Americans were organized into groups historically known as the Ute, Goshute, and the Northwestern Shoshone. As Euro-Americans moved west, Free Trappers scoured the mountains and valleys for the furs that fueled the early frontier economy, which in time had a global economic impact. Beginning in the 1840's, the area served as the anchor point for pioneers belonging to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS), as they settled throughout the Great Basin and the Intermountain West. Historic Stone Quarries located on the Forest today supplied the materials for the famous LDS Temple in Salt Lake City. Timber harvested from the Forests that would become the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache, was shaped into the railroad ties that connected the Nation at Promontory Point in 1869. These public lands have a long history of multiple use, a tradition that continues today under the management of the USFS.
