You probably knew G.D. Spradlin best as Senator Pat Geary from The Godfather, Part II, where he played the corrupt politician blackmailed by Michael Corleone after he wakes up and finds himself drenched in a murdered prostitute's blood.

I knew him as Elliot P. Grantham, the Idaho farmer who was Patient Zero, the first official victim of the alien Hive's infestation in the NBC series Dark Skies.
My co-creator Brent Friedman and I knew we'd gotten lucky in casting. Who didn't cringe a little in The Godfather, Part II when Spradlin's Senator Geary treats Michael Corleone with contempt early in the film? You knew it wouldn't go well. We had gotten lucky early on by offering a series lead role to J.T. Walsh to play Frank Bach and he said yes. We tried again with Spradlin, wondering if he would find the part too small or, given the alien angle, too silly. But he said yes, too. We were thrilled. As it turned out, Dark Skies was the last television he ever did and the second to last acting job (he also appeared in the feature film, Dick).
A native Oklahoman, Gervase Duan Spradlin died July 24 at his ranch in San Luis Obispo, Calif. He was 90. Everyone always called him "G.D." We did.
He'd appeared in more than 70 films and television shows. But he wasn't just an actor. He drew upon real-life experience as an attorney, oilman and rancher. We cast him as a farmer, Elliot P. Grantham, who is quietly going mad as the alien parasite grows inside his head.
Besides Senator Geary, the other role that made him famous was playing the general who assigns Martin Sheen to the search mission in Apocalypse Now. Watch that scene again if you get the chance.
Besides Dark Skies, G.D. Spradlin appeared in TV shows like Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.; Mannix; It Takes a Thief; Dragnet; and Adam 12. He directed two films, The Only Way Home and Outside In, both released in 1972.
I've just pulled out the clip from Dark Skies where the main character John Loengard (played by Eric Close) first encounters Grantham and is taken out to see his crop circle. And I've included the autopsy scene that follows because, in order to do it, G.D. had to let us make a plaster cast of his face which he did, patiently.
G.D. lived a long life, and he has left some fine moments in film for us to continue to remember him.

Sadly, we have to point out that the "Dark Skies" title has recently been appropriated by Dimension Films for use on a spooky horror film that they're releasing in 2013. They call their movie "Dark Skies," but true fans will know better. They will know that "Dark Skies" is a classic, original, and definitive expression that does not deserve this confusing treatment.
To set the record straight, the vision for the authentic "Dark Skies" came from Bryce Zabel and Brent V. Friedman who created it for NBC as a primetime network TV series about an alien invasion in the 1996-1997 season. Columbia TV produced twenty hours of film of this "Dark Skies" series. In 2011, Shout Factory! released a critically praised DVD set of "Dark Skies."

In short, "Dark Skies" has established itself in the minds of a signficant number of science fiction fans as a gripping piece of conspiracy drama set in the world of UFOs and abductions. It anchored NBC's Saturday night "Thrillogy" concept in the 1996 season premiere and starred Eric Close ("Nashville") and the classic character actor J.T. Walsh. Its main title design won the Emmy award and its pilot screenplay received a Writers Guild nomination. The Syfy Channel aired it multiple times. Since 2010 there's been a Facebook page where thousands of fans from many different countries push Sony for a revival of the series. In 2012, Sony talked to the creators about this very possibility.
Supporters of the creative rights of writers should ask Dimension Films to let its film stand on its own merits and call it by a different title. "Dark Skies" is taken.

In a society in which major league sporting events have replaced Sunday worship as the religion of choice, North Dallas Forty appears like a desecration at the altar. In this film, directed by Ted Kotcheff (The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz), the National Football League is revealed to be more about the money than the game. Nick Nolte is North Dallas Bulls pass-catcher Phillip Elliott, whose cynicism and independent spirit is looked upon as troublesome by team coaches Johnson (Charles Durning) and Strothers (G.D. Spradlin) and team owner Conrad Hunter (Steve Forrest). Elliot, at the end of his career and wise to the way players are bought and sold like cattle, goes through the games pumped up on painkillers conveniently provided by the management. His teammates include savvy quarterback Maxwell (Mac Davis) and lunk-headed defensive lineman Jo Bob Priddy (Bo Svenson), who deal with the impersonality and back-biting of the game through off-field diversions. When the Bulls management benches Elliot after manipulating him to help train a fellow teammate, Elliot has to decide whether there is more to life than the game that he loves.

G. D. Spradlin
Gervase Duan "G.D." Spradlin (August 31, 1920 – July 24, 2011) was an American actor. Known for his distinctive accent and flinty voice, he often played devious authority figures. He is credited in over 70 television and film productions, and performed alongside actors including Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, Charlton Heston, George C. Scott and Johnny Depp.
Early life
Spradlin was born in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma. His parents both worked as schoolteachers. Spradlin obtained his bachelor's degree in education from the University of Oklahoma. He was a member of the Delta Chi Fraternity. He then served in the United States Army Air Force during World War II, where he was stationed in China.
Following World War II, Spradlin returned to the University of Oklahoma, where he completed a law degree in 1948. He first began his career as an attorney working in Venezuela and then became an independent oil producer forming Rouge Oil Company. Before he turned to acting he was active in local politics campaigning for John F. Kennedy in 1959. He joined the Oklahoma Repertory Theatre in 1964.

Dark Skies
Dark Skies is an American UFO conspiracy theory–based sci-fi television series (1996–97). 18 episodes, and a two-hour pilot episode were broadcast as a part of the Thrillogy block on NBC. The success of The X-Files on Fox proved there was an audience for science fiction shows, resulting in NBC commissioning this proposed competitor following a pitch from producers Bryce Zabel and Brent Friedman. The series debuted September 21, 1996, on NBC, and was later rerun by the Sci-Fi Channel. Its tagline was "History as we know it is a lie."
Plot summary
The series presents the idea that 20th century history as people know it is a lie. It depicts aliens having been among humans since the late 1940s, with a government cover-up concealing their existence from the public. As the series progresses, viewers follow John Loengard and Kim Sayers through the 1960s as they attempt to foil the plots of the alien "Hive". The Hive is an alien race that planned to invade Earth through a manipulation of historical events and famous figures, including most notably the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. In addition, the pair must stay one step ahead of Majestic 12, a covert government agency that has mixed motives. The show depicted a number of real-life 1960s personalities in the plot, such as The Beatles, Robert F. Kennedy, Jim Morrison, and J. Edgar Hoover.

North Dallas
North Dallas is an area of numerous communities and neighborhoods in Dallas, Texas (United States). The phrase "North Dallas" is also sometimes used to include any suburb or exurb north of Dallas proper within the metropolitan area. The majority of North Dallas is located in Dallas County while a small portion is located in Collin and Denton County. North Dallas generally includes areas of Dallas north of Northwest Highway, along with Lake Highlands and areas of Dallas north of IH-635 known as Far North Dallas. The area has strong social and economic ties to the Dallas enclave of Park Cities, and two inner suburbs of Dallas, Richardson and Addison. It is the wealthiest part of Dallas.
As Dallas has grown over the last several decades the concept of "North Dallas" has changed from the area just north of downtown, along Central Expressway (where North Dallas High School is located), to the far northern reaches of Dallas proper and the suburbs to the north of the city.

North Dallas Forty
North Dallas Forty is a 1979 sports drama film starring Nick Nolte, Mac Davis, and G. D. Spradlin set in the world of American professional football. It was directed by Ted Kotcheff and based on the best-selling novel by Peter Gent. The screenplay was by Kotcheff, Gent, Frank Yablans and Nancy Dowd (uncredited). This was the first film role for Davis, a popular country music recording artist.
Plot
Wide receiver Phil Elliott (Nolte) plays for a 1970s era professional football team based in Dallas, Texas named the North Dallas Bulls, which closely resembles the Dallas Cowboys.
Though considered to possess "the best hands in the game", the aging Elliott is struggling to stay competitive and relies heavily on painkillers. Elliott and popular quarterback Seth Maxwell (Davis) are outstanding players, but they also characterize the drug-, sex-, and alcohol-fueled party atmosphere of NFL teams of that era. Elliott wants only to play the game, retire, and own a home with his girlfriend Charlotte (Dayle Haddon), who appears to be financially independent, and has no interest whatsoever in football.

You probably knew G.D. Spradlin best as Senator Pat Geary from The Godfather, Part II, where he played the corrupt politician blackmailed by Michael Corleone after he wakes up and finds himself drenched in a murdered prostitute's blood.

I knew him as Elliot P. Grantham, the Idaho farmer who was Patient Zero, the first official victim of the alien Hive's infestation in the NBC series Dark Skies.
My co-creator Brent Friedman and I knew we'd gotten lucky in casting. Who didn't cringe a little in The Godfather, Part II when Spradlin's Senator Geary treats Michael Corleone with contempt early in the film? You knew it wouldn't go well. We had gotten lucky early on by offering a series lead role to J.T. Walsh to play Frank Bach and he said yes. We tried again with Spradlin, wondering if he would find the part too small or, given the alien angle, too silly. But he said yes, too. We were thrilled. As it turned out, Dark Skies was the last television he ever did and the second to last acting job (he also appeared in the feature film, Dick).
A native Oklahoman, Gervase Duan Spradlin died July 24 at his ranch in San Luis Obispo, Calif. He was 90. Everyone always called him "G.D." We did.
He'd appeared in more than 70 films and television shows. But he wasn't just an actor. He drew upon real-life experience as an attorney, oilman and rancher. We cast him as a farmer, Elliot P. Grantham, who is quietly going mad as the alien parasite grows inside his head.
Besides Senator Geary, the other role that made him famous was playing the general who assigns Martin Sheen to the search mission in Apocalypse Now. Watch that scene again if you get the chance.
Besides Dark Skies, G.D. Spradlin appeared in TV shows like Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.; Mannix; It Takes a Thief; Dragnet; and Adam 12. He directed two films, The Only Way Home and Outside In, both released in 1972.
I've just pulled out the clip from Dark Skies where the main character John Loengard (played by Eric Close) first encounters Grantham and is taken out to see his crop circle. And I've included the autopsy scene that follows because, in order to do it, G.D. had to let us make a plaster cast of his face which he did, patiently.
G.D. lived a long life, and he has left some fine moments in film for us to continue to remember him.

You probably knew G.D. Spradlin best as Senator Pat Geary from The Godfather, Part II, where he played the corrupt politician blackmailed by Michael Corleone after he wakes up and finds himself drenched in a murdered prostitute's blood.

I knew him as Elliot P. Grantham, the Idaho farmer who was Patient Zero, the first official victim of the alien Hive's infestation in the NBC series Dark Skies.
My co-creator Brent Friedman and I knew we'd gotten lucky in casting. Who didn't cringe a little in The Godfather, Part II when Spradlin's Senator Geary treats Michael Corleone with contempt early in the film? You knew it wouldn't go well. We had gotten lucky early on by offering a series lead role to J.T. Walsh to play Frank Bach and he said yes. We tried again with Spradlin, wondering if he would find the part too small or, given the alien angle, too silly. But he said yes, too. We were thrilled. As it turned out, Dark Skies was the last television he ever did and the second to last acting job (he also appeared in the feature film, Dick).
A native Oklahoman, Gervase Duan Spradlin died July 24 at his ranch in San Luis Obispo, Calif. He was 90. Everyone always called him "G.D." We did.
He'd appeared in more than 70 films and television shows. But he wasn't just an actor. He drew upon real-life experience as an attorney, oilman and rancher. We cast him as a farmer, Elliot P. Grantham, who is quietly going mad as the alien parasite grows inside his head.
Besides Senator Geary, the other role that made him famous was playing the general who assigns Martin Sheen to the search mission in Apocalypse Now. Watch that scene again if you get the chance.
Besides Dark Skies, G.D. Spradlin appeared in TV shows like Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.; Mannix; It Takes a Thief; Dragnet; and Adam 12. He directed two films, The Only Way Home and Outside In, both released in 1972.
I've just pulled out the clip from Dark Skies where the main character John Loengard (played by Eric Close) first encounters Grantham and is taken out to see his crop circle. And I've included the autopsy scene that follows because, in order to do it, G.D. had to let us make a plaster cast of his face which he did, patiently.
G.D. lived a long life, and he has left some fine moments in film for us to continue to remember him.

Sadly, we have to point out that the "Dark Skies" title has recently been appropriated by Dimension Films for use on a spooky horror film that they're releasing in 2013. They call their movie "Dark Skies," but true fans will know better. They will know that "Dark Skies" is a classic, original, and definitive expression that does not deserve this confusing treatment.
To set the record straight, the vision for the authentic "Dark Skies" came from Bryce Zabel and Brent V. Friedman who created it for NBC as a primetime network TV series about an alien invasion in the 1996-1997 season. Columbia TV produced twenty hours of film of this "Dark Skies" series. In 2011, Shout Factory! released a critically praised DVD set of "Dark Skies."

In short, "Dark Skies" has established itself in the minds of a signficant number of science fiction fans as a gripping piece of conspiracy drama set in the world of UFOs and abductions. It anchored NBC's Saturday night "Thrillogy" concept in the 1996 season premiere and starred Eric Close ("Nashville") and the classic character actor J.T. Walsh. Its main title design won the Emmy award and its pilot screenplay received a Writers Guild nomination. The Syfy Channel aired it multiple times. Since 2010 there's been a Facebook page where thousands of fans from many different countries push Sony for a revival of the series. In 2012, Sony talked to the creators about this very possibility.
Supporters of the creative rights of writers should ask Dimension Films to let its film stand on its own merits and call it by a different title. "Dark Skies" is taken.

In a society in which major league sporting events have replaced Sunday worship as the religion of choice, North Dallas Forty appears like a desecration at the altar. In this film, directed by Ted Kotcheff (The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz), the National Football League is revealed to be more about the money than the game. Nick Nolte is North Dallas Bulls pass-catcher Phillip Elliott, whose cynicism and independent spirit is looked upon as troublesome by team coaches Johnson (Charles Durning) and Strothers (G.D. Spradlin) and team owner Conrad Hunter (Steve Forrest). Elliot, at the end of his career and wise to the way players are bought and sold like cattle, goes through the games pumped up on painkillers conveniently provided by the management. His teammates include savvy quarterback Maxwell (Mac Davis) and lunk-headed defensive lineman Jo Bob Priddy (Bo Svenson), who deal with the impersonality and back-biting of the game through off-field diversions. When the Bulls management benches Elliot after manipulating him to help train a fellow teammate, Elliot has to decide whether there is more to life than the game that he loves.

From KOMA radio biography: The Ronnie Kaye story began in a sleepy town in southeast Missouri. Growing up in Cooter was probably not much different than growing up in most small towns in the America in the 40's and 50's. His dad was the town pharmacist and his mom was a piano teacher at Cooter High School. Between church, school, and home, Ronnie was always surrounded by music. When the high school presented a play or show, Ronnie was always a part of it. By high school, he was studying to become a concert pianist, performing recitals of Bach, Brahms, and Beethoven. At the same time, he was hearing radio stations in Memphis play Perkins, Presley, and Chuck Berry. Ronnie's high school superintendent, Mr. J.E. Growing up in Cooter was probably not much different than growing up in most small towns in the America in the 40's and 50's. His dad was the town pharmacist and his mom was a piano teacher at Cooter High School.
Between church, school, and home, Ronnie was always surrounded by music. When the high school presented a play or show, Ronnie was always a part of it. By high school, he was studying to become a concert pianist, performing recitals of Bach, Brahms, and Beethoven. At the same time, he was hearing radio stations in Memphis play Perkins, Presley, and Chuck Berry.
Ronnie's high school superintendent, Mr. J.E. Godwin, sensed that he liked the business and suggested that Ronnie do play-by-play of the county high school basketball tournament on KLCN in Blytheville, Arkansas. The manager liked the idea and Ronnie's career was off and running.
After graduation from high school in 1955, Ronnie attended Memphis State University and hitch-hiked home every weekend to do a radio show on KLCN. Suddenly in the music Mecca of Memphis, surrounded by some of the best radio people in America, he began to realize that his choice of radio was a good one.
In 1960 his first real offer came from Don Hodges, with whom he had worked in Blytheville. Without hesitation, Ronnie packed up his new wife and baby and headed to Lawton, Oklahoma to take the job at KSWO.
After working in Lawton for six months, he made the pivotal move of his career. It took many phone calls and a lot of rejection, but finally Danny Williams said "yes" and offered him a job on WKY in Oklahoma City.
Late in the 60's, Ronnie asked for the opportunity to produce and host a local teen dance show on Channel 4 that catapulted his career to new heights. "The Scene" aired at 12:30 on Saturdays on WKY-TV (now KFOR.) The show featured local kids dancing and national artists performing. Ronnie found himself transporting people like Ray Charles, Jerry Lee Lewis, James Brown, and Smokey Robinson from the Skirvin downtown to the studios on Britton Rd. For eight years, the show was syndicated in 10 markets in the southwestern United States including California and Texas.
In 1980, Ronnie left radio and went to KOKH-TV where he served as News and Public Service Director for eleven years.
By 1991, the baby boomers from the 60's and 70's were musically ready to return to the times when things were a bit more simple and life was a little less demanding. Oldies radio was beginning to show great promise, especially for a radio station that had pioneered the Top Forty format from the beginning: 50,000 watt KOMA. He went to work there and has been a principal player in the success of the station ever since.
"I'd like to think I was a part of that success. And after some 40-plus years in the business, the job remains fresh, exciting and always challenging. The people at KOMA are making this the most fun-filled part of my life."
Ronnie was inducted into the Oklahoma Broadcasters Hall of Fame along with Paul Harvey, Bob Braun of CBS News, the legendary Will Rogers, and the Singing Cowboy, Gene Autry.
"I once saw a large mouth bass stuffed and mounted by a taxidermy with a caption that read, 'If I'd kept my mouth shut,, I wouldn't be here now,' Well the same goes for me and radio. But I'm glad to say that I just never kept my mouth shut."

I knew him as Elliot P. Grantham, the Idaho farmer who was Patient Zero, the first official victim of the alien Hive's infestation in the NBC series Dark Skies.
My co-creator Brent Friedman and I knew we'd gotten lucky in casting. Who didn't cringe a little in The Godfather, Part II when Spradlin's Senator Geary treats Michael Corleone with contempt early in the film? You knew it wouldn't go well. We had gotten lucky early on by offering a series lead role to J.T. Walsh to play Frank Bach and he said yes. We tried again with Spradlin, wondering if he would find the part too small or, given the alien angle, too silly. But he said yes, too. We were thrilled. As it turned out, Dark Skies was the last television he ever did and the second to last acting job (he also appeared in the feature film, Dick).
A native Oklahoman, Gervase Duan Spradlin died July 24 at his ranch in San Luis Obispo, Calif. He was 90. Everyone always called him "G.D." We did.
He'd appeared in more than 70 films and television shows. But he wasn't just an actor. He drew upon real-life experience as an attorney, oilman and rancher. We cast him as a farmer, Elliot P. Grantham, who is quietly going mad as the alien parasite grows inside his head.
Besides Senator Geary, the other role that made him famous was playing the general who assigns Martin Sheen to the search mission in Apocalypse Now. Watch that scene again if you get the chance.
Besides Dark Skies, G.D. Spradlin appeared in TV shows like Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.; Mannix; It Takes a Thief; Dragnet; and Adam 12. He directed two films, The Only Way Home and Outside In, both released in 1972.
I've just pulled out the clip from Dark Skies where the main character John Loengard (played by Eric Close) first encounters Grantham and is taken out to see his crop circle. And I've included the autopsy scene that follows because, in order to do it, G.D. had to let us make a plaster cast of his face which he did, patiently.
G.D. lived a long life, and he has left some fine moments in film for us to continue to remember him.

Sadly, we have to point out that the "Dark Skies" title has recently been appropriated by Dimension Films for use on a spooky horror film that they're releasing in 2013. They call their movie "Dark Skies," but true fans will know better. They will know that "Dark Skies" is a classic, original, and definitive expression that does not deserve this confusing treatment.
To set the record straight, the vision for the authentic "Dark Skies" came from Bryce Zabel and Brent V. Friedman who created it for NBC as a primetime network TV series about an alien invasion in the 1996-1997 season. Columbia TV produced twenty hours of film of this "Dark Skies" series. In 2011, Shout Factory! released a critically praised DVD set of "Dark Skies."

In short, "Dark Skies" has established itself in the minds of a signficant number of science fiction fans as a gripping piece of conspiracy drama set in the world of UFOs and abductions. It anchored NBC's Saturday night "Thrillogy" concept in the 1996 season premiere and starred Eric Close ("Nashville") and the classic character actor J.T. Walsh. Its main title design won the Emmy award and its pilot screenplay received a Writers Guild nomination. The Syfy Channel aired it multiple times. Since 2010 there's been a Facebook page where thousands of fans from many different countries push Sony for a revival of the series. In 2012, Sony talked to the creators about this very possibility.
Supporters of the creative rights of writers should ask Dimension Films to let its film stand on its own merits and call it by a different title. "Dark Skies" is taken.

Nick Nolte is North Dallas Bulls pass-catcher Phillip Elliott, whose cynicism and independent spirit is looked upon as troublesome by team coaches Johnson (Charles Durning) and Strothers (G.D. Spradlin) and team owner Conrad Hunter (Steve Forrest). Elliot, at the end of his career and wise to the way players are bought and sold like cattle, goes through the games pumped up on painkillers conveniently provided by the management. His teammates include savvy quarterback Maxwell (Mac Davis) and lunk-headed defensive lineman Jo Bob Priddy (Bo Svenson), who deal with the impersonality and back-biting of the game through off-field diversions. When the Bulls management benches Elliot after manipulating him to help train a fellow teammate, Elliot has to decide whether there is more to life than the game that he loves.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
Francis Ford Coppola's legendary continuation and sequel to his landmark 1972 film, The Godfather, parallels the young Vito Corleone's rise with his son Michael's spiritual fall, deepening The Godfather's depiction of the dark side of the American dream. In the early 1900s, the child Vito flees his Sicilian village for America after the local Mafia kills his family. Vito (Robert De Niro) struggles to make a living, legally or illegally, for his wife and growing brood in Little Italy, killing the local Black Hand Fanucci (Gastone Moschin) after he demands his customary cut of the tyro's business. With Fanucci gone, Vito's communal stature grows, but it is his family (past and present) who matters most to him -- a familial legacy then upended by Michael's (Al Pacino) business expansion in the 1950s. Now based in Lake Tahoe, Michael conspires to make inroads in Las Vegas and Havana pleasure industries by any means necessary. As he realizes that allies like Hyman Roth (Lee Strasberg) are trying to kill him, the increasingly paranoid Michael also discovers that his ambition has crippled his marriage to Kay (Diane Keaton) and turned his brother, Fredo (John Cazale), against him. Barely escaping a federal indictment, Michael turns his attention to dealing with his enemies, completing his own corruption.
