For more than thirty six years the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Jordan served the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan with its knowledge and expertise, financially and technically assisting Jordan to improve the lives of local communities.

UNDP engages with Jordanians at all levels of society to provide support in developing their capacities to enhance their livelihood. UNDP Jordan works closely with the government of Jordan to meet the needs of citizens and tackle the challenges facing the kingdom in the following areas of support: Reducing Poverty and Achieving the Millennium Development Goals, Promoting Democratic Governance, Climate Change and Protecting the Environment and Management and Preparedness for Potential Disaster.

Promoting gender equity, inclusion of youth in development programmes, and the protection and promotion of human rights are main components of UNDP Jordan’s attention in the areas of support provided to Jordan.

UNDP Jordan remains attentive to respond to the development needs in Jordan in alignment with the national priorities.

In Jordan, UNDP’s focus is to support the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan in providing solutions to the challenges of:

• Reducing Poverty and Achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)
• Promoting Democratic Governance
• Climate Change and Protecting the Environment
• Management and Preparedness for Potential Disasters

In all these areas of support, UNDP pays particular attention to connecting to the UN global knowledge networks, promoting gender equity, inclusion of youth in development programmes, and the protection and promotion of human rights.

Jordan Country Office, through working with different implementing partners in the areas of Poverty Reduction, Democratic Governance, Crisis Prevention & Recovery, and Environment & Energy managed to implement many projects based on the national priorities and the emerging need of the country.

UNDP projects addressed the policy level as well as implementation at the national and local levels. This involved establishing real partnerships with the different national institutions (government, NGOs, and CBOs), grassroots, and local communities.

Results achieved in the past five years included:

• Formulation of the Poverty Reduction Strategy 2013-2020
• Climate Change Policy (the first for Jordan and in the Region)
• Establishment of Dibeen Natural Reserve
• Trans-locating the coral reefs in Aqaba
• Supporting the establishment of the Independent Elections Commission (IEC), and the 2013 parliamentary elections.
• Establishing a national automated system for property tax collection.
• Achieving a historical milestone, being the first country in the Middle East to meet the deadline set by the Ottawa Mine-Ban Treaty and declare itself free of minefields, through the Northern Border Clearance Project, which succeeded in clearing an estimated 136,000 landmines (anti-personnel and anti-tank) in a mine belt of approximately 10.5 square Km in area, stretching 104 Km along the Jordan-Syria border.

The Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme is the highest United Nations official and the chief of UNDP Jordan Office accredited to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. The Resident Representative represents the highest level of accountability of the UNDP Jordan Office.  The Resident Representative delegates authority to The Country Director.  Decisions in UNDP Jordan are made by the Management Group consisting of The Resident Representative, The Country Director, The Programme Manager and the Operations Manager

UNDP in Jordan currently employs 63 staff members. Our staff representing all segments of Jordanian society comes from a diverse range of professional backgrounds. Three staff members are international staff.
