Uganda (/juːˈɡændə/ yew-GAN-də or /juːˈɡɑːndə/ yew-GAHN-də), officially the Republic of Uganda, is a landlocked country in East Africa. It is bordered to the east by Kenya, to the north by South Sudan, to the west by the Democratic Republic of the Congo, to the southwest by Rwanda, and to the south by Tanzania. Uganda is the world's second most populous landlocked country after Ethiopia. The southern part of the country includes a substantial portion of Lake Victoria, shared with Kenya and Tanzania, situating the country in the African Great Lakes region. Uganda also lies within the Nile basin, and has a varied but generally a modified equatorial climate.
Uganda takes its name from the Buganda kingdom, which encompasses a large portion of the south of the country, including the capital Kampala. The people of Uganda were hunter-gatherers until 1,700 to 2,300 years ago, when Bantu-speaking populations migrated to the southern parts of the country.
This article describes the undergraduate dorms at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, with a focus on student culture and dormitory life (including meal options). All undergrad MIT dorms are officially coed and reserved for unmarried students, except McCormick Hall, which remains women-only. Because living conditions are strongly affected by architecture, there is coverage of that topic here. For a more esthetic architectural focus, see the article Campus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
The MIT administration has emphasized incorporation of shared dining facilities into several larger undergraduate dormitories, as places where daily informal social interactions can occur. After discontinuation of "mandatory commons" in 1970, required meal plans were reinstituted in Fall 2011 for residents of several dormitories, despite the vigorous objections of some students. As of 2015, the MIT meal plans offer a mix of choices, required for residents of some dorms, and optional for all other undergraduates and all grad students.

Living in a poor country with one of the worst doctor-patient ratios in the world - about one for every 24,000 people - it's perhaps no surprise that many Ugandans are tempted by alternative remedies, even though there's often little evidence to support the claims made about their efficacy in treating or preventing disease. But the phenomenon does beg many questions, not least of which are who is really benefiting from the sale of these products and how exactly are they marketed? We'd heard reports about one particularly controversial business, a complex multi-level marketing scheme run in Uganda under the aegis of a Chinese company called Tiens, which produces food supplements. Its products, we'd been told, were being inappropriately sold as medications - in some cases for very serious ...

A doctor has set up a fast-growing business based on the supply of household cooking gas. Part of his aim, is to drastically reduce indoor air pollution, by replacing firewood, charcoal and kerosene, with cleaner LPG.
The villages and farming communities that surround Uganda's capital, Kampala, are gripped by fear. Schoolchildren are closely watched by teachers and parents as they make their way home from school. In playgrounds and on the roadside are posters warning of the danger of abduction by witch doctors for the purpose of child sacrifice. The ritual, which some believe brings wealth and good health, was almost unheard of in the country until around three years ago, but it has re-emerged, seemingly alongside a boom in the country's economy. The BBC's Chris Rogers reports that many cases of child sacrifice in Uganda are not being followed up by the police and little is being done to protect potential victims. The plight of Senior House Officers in Mulago Hospital By Prince Kakungulu Edward Back in 2012, while I was attending to patients in one of the private hospitals in Kampala, a mother walked in at 3:00 am with her child who had an exacerbation of Asthma (severe allergic airway disease). She requested to see a pediatrician (a specialist doctor for babies and children), to her dismay there was none at that time and out of frustration she asked, “But how are these specialists made?” Specialist doctors in the making are referred to as Senior House Officers here in Uganda (and in Ireland, and formerly in the UK and other countries whose education systems are similar to the UK)while in the US they are called Medical residents. They are postgraduate students in a university training to acquire ...
Hip-hop and superstition go together like gin 'n' juice, with Jay-Z's links to the the Illuminati being just the latest slice of urban mythology. But if you're a striving hip-hop star in Uganda, you probably don't have that kind of illicit, world-bending power at your disposal. But you may have a local witch doctor who can guarantee your fame by similarly shady means. Hotman Predator wants to be a superstar, so naturally his producer tells him to grab a chicken and seek out a Voodoo ritual. The rest could be music history, maybe. In Kasese, Uganda, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) runs a recreation center for adolescents. The kids come to play games and make crafts and they also get to know the MSF health staff who give short talks on topics including HIV. Many of the kids who have come to the center have eventually gotten tested for HIV at the adjacent MSF health clinic, and several of those are now receiving treatment. Adolescents are the most vulnerable group of HIV patients and they require specific care. As an example, MSF social worker Kathy MacLaughlin tells the story of Timmy, who was 13 years old and HIV-positive. Dr. Ian Clarke an Irish white medical doctor has lived in Uganda since 1987 during the repression times that saw many Ugandans killed in the Luwelo war. He was a missionary doctor then and he helped many wounded children, women and men. For two years he treated them under a tree in his own compound. In 2011 he decided to go into politics and work towards social development. He won the elections as the mayor of Makindye Division in Kampala. In his two year tenure in politics, he has done a lot and many Ugandans are so thrilled with him more than they are with the Ugandan politicians.
