The political and legal status of Taiwan (or the Taiwan Issue, Mainland Issue or Taiwan Strait Issue as referred to by the Republic of China) hinges on whether Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu should remain effectively independent as territory of the Republic of China (ROC); become unified with the territories now governed by the People's Republic of China (PRC); formally declare independence and become the Republic of Taiwan; as well as whether the existence and legal status as a state ("country") of both the ROC and the PRC is legitimate as a matter of international law, and how much diplomatic recognition either entity receives from the international community.
Currently, Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen, Matsu, and some other minor islands effectively make up the jurisdiction of the state with the official name of Republic of China but widely known as Taiwan. The ROC, which took control of Taiwan (including Penghu and other nearby islands) in 1945, ruled mainland China and claimed sovereignty over Outer Mongolia (now Mongolia) and Tannu Uriankhai (part of which is present day Tuva, Russia) before losing the Chinese Civil War and relocating its government to Taipei, Taiwan in December 1949. On September 1951, Japan officially renounced its right to Taiwan in the Treaty of San Francisco without explicitly stating the sovereignty status of Taiwan, and hence some supporters of Taiwanese independence argue that the sovereignty of Taiwan is still held by the Allies.
Cross-Strait relations (simplified Chinese: 海峡两岸关系; traditional Chinese: 海峽兩岸關係; pinyin: Hǎixiá liǎng'àn guānxì) are the relations between mainland China and Taiwan, which are separated by the Taiwan Strait in the west Pacific Ocean, and in particular between their respective governments:
In 1949, with the Chinese Civil War turning decisively in the Communists' (CPC) favour, the ROC government led by the Kuomintang (KMT) retreated to Taipei, in Taiwan, while the CPC proclaimed the PRC government in Beijing.
Since then, the relations between China and Taiwan have been characterized by limited contact, tensions, and instability. In the early years, military conflicts continued, while diplomatically both governments competed to be the "legitimate government of China". More recently, questions around the political and legal status of Taiwan have focused on the alternative prospects of political unification with China or full Taiwanese independence. The People's Republic remains hostile to any formal declaration of independence and maintains its claim over Taiwan. At the same time, non-governmental and semi-governmental exchanges between the two sides have been increasing. From 2008, negotiations began to restore the "three links" (transportation, commerce, and communications) between the two sides, cut off since 1949. Party-to-party talks between the CPC and the KMT have resumed and semi-official negotiations through organizations representing the interests of their respective governments are being scheduled.

Taiwan (i/ˌtaɪˈwɑːn/; Chinese: 臺灣 or 台灣; see below), officially the Republic of China (ROC; Chinese: 中華民國; pinyin: Zhōnghuá Mínguó), is a sovereign state in East Asia. The Republic of China, originally based in mainland China, now governs the island of Taiwan, which constitutes more than 99% of its territory, as well as Penghu, Kinmen, Matsu, and other minor islands, following its loss of the mainland China territory in 1949 in the Chinese Civil War. This remaining area is also constitutionally called the "Free area of the Republic of China" which is not ruled by the Communist Party of China in Beijing.
Neighboring states include the People's Republic of China (PRC) to the west (mainland China), Japan to the east and northeast, and the Philippines to the south. Taiwan is one of the most densely populated countries in the world with a population density of 649 people per km2 in October 2015.Taipei is the seat of the central government, and together with the surrounding cities of New Taipei and Keelung forms the largest metropolitan area on the island.

To call a city 'the best food city in the world' is kind if ridiculous. After all, food is subjective. But I've traveled a lot over the past 30 years, and I can honestly say that Taipei has been my favorite food city. It has a diversity that is somewhat rare in Asia. The Chinese food there is extremely good, no matter what part of China it's from. Taiwanese food is most often a take on an already delicious dish. We feasted for 7 days and loved every bite. Join us as we explore Taiwan's food culture. China today told Taiwan that there was no other way to "end the deadlock" between them than to accept the One-China policy. Taiwan authorities should accept the 1992 Consensus which embodies the One-China principle to break the current cross- Strait communication deadlock, said China's Spokesperson for Taiwan Affairs An Fengshan. By refusing to endorse the 1992 Consensus, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), headed by Taiwanese President Tsai- Ing-wen has undermined the common political foundation of the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations, An said. "The key to ending the deadlock is for Taiwan to return to the common fundamental political basis. There is no other way," he was quoted as saying by the state-run Xinhua news agency. Welcome to a Shanghai Flyer flight report, for those of you who already subscribed a warm welcome back :) This is a review of my recent flight on China Airlines from Shanghai to Taipei. This is also my second time flying with China airlines. The flight was operated by a Boeing 777-300ER with Boeing special livery. I was originally booked into economy, however, on regional flights China Airlines allows economy passengers to choose premium economy for free. Due to the passing Thunderstorms the airport was temporarily closed after boarding. We were stranded on the plane for roughly four hours until we received our slot to push back. The flight itself was rather uneventful, the service was satisfactory despite the horrible catering out of PVG. Overall, it was a solid 90 mins flight with Chi...
Welcome to another Shanghai Flyer Production, for those who already subscribed a warm welcome back ! :) This is a review of my connecting flight from New York. I was flying from Taipei to Shanghai on one of the Eva Air’s last three Boeing 747-400s. This ticket was booked together with my flight from New York and all together they cost me 75000 Avianca Miles each way with 60 USD of taxes. I was seated in 13A, I chose that seat since nobody was sitting next to me. The aircraft I was on is B-16410, delivered in 1998. The business class seat or Premium Laurel Class is ALL located on the main deck. The upper deck is filled with economy seats in a 3-3 configuration. The business Class seats are in a 2-2-2 in the main cabin and the forward cabin features 2-2 with a bar which is active during th...

Taiwan''s exports are expected to shrink this year, leading many to forecast economic growth of around 2 percent. While the government says poor economic data is mainly due to international conditions, some believe a more serious industrial transformation is taking place. This factory at the Changhua Coastal Industrial Park produces synthetic leather. Many of its long-term downstream customers have moved away from Taiwan, making business increasingly difficult.Chen Yung-nengXing He Industry GM At the outset, we shouldn’t encourage them to move but to instead upgrade their technology and production. The government hasn’t been very effective in cultivating this industry, so many middle and downstream companies have rushed to Southeast Asia or China to survive. Li Mou-dian Xing He Industry Ch...

Contrary to my previous business class flight with China Airlines, on this flight the crew encouraged me to take as much video and pictures as I want and never mentioned anything about a "copyright violation" that the previous crew warned me about. The crew was absolutely phenomenal. Several crew members took time to speak with me during the flight. In particular, the purser encouraged me to give them tips for improvement. She told me that an airline must always be a step ahead of its competitors even if they are already ahead. Although everyone loves China Airline's cabins and service improvements since the image overhaul, she was very wary of the praise because of the significant concentration of highly rated airlines like Cathay, Singapore, the Japanese and Korean airlines, and EVA in ...
The Boeing 747-400 is a major development and the best-selling model of the Boeing 747 family of jet airliners. While retaining the four-engine wide-body layout of its predecessors, the 747-400 embodies numerous technological and structural changes to produce a more efficient airframe. Its most distinguishing features versus preceding 747 models are 6-foot (1.8 m) winglets mounted on 6-foot (1.8 m) wing tip extensions, which are found on all 747-400s except for Japanese domestic market versions. The 747-400 is equipped with a two-crew glass cockpit, which dispenses with the need for a flight engineer, along with more fuel-efficient engines, an optional fuel tank in the horizontal stabilizer, and revised fuselage/wing fairings. The aircraft also features an all-new interior with upgraded in...
I used 35,000 miles to upgrade from Elite to Royal Laurel Class from Taipei to Los Angeles. I love the flat bed seat the most. It helped me to relax and enjoy the flight much more (who doesn't?) than economy/elite class. A round trip ticket from LAX to Asia on Royal Laurel will cost at least $5000. EVA Air Flight BR 75 departing from Taipei, Taiwan to Bangkok, Thailand. Follow me on the short 3 hour flight onboard the heavy Boeing 777-300ER. You'll see everything from: Boarding, takeoff, inflight food all the way to landing at the modern & mighty Suvarnabhumi Bangkok International Airport. Make your own opinions from what you see and compare it to what you're use to in air travel. For me, I found the service typical for Eva Air which is clean, quick and convenient with courteous staff onboard their aircraft. The food was ok, but after just coming off another Eva flight where we're fed twice... I really wasn't in the mood for more airline food. Summary: Will continue to use this airline for our travel needs to Asia when the price is right.

On Sunday, October 25th, 2015 after visiting the Longshan Temple and the Tourist Night Market we drove around looking for a place where to have lunch, and a place where to park the car. As it was not possible find a single parking spot, we drove away from the centre to a Recreation Centre where David had a membership card. Very beautiful installation in gym, swimming pool and sauna and internet connection (high speed). There we had a Chinese lunch, drink a Taiwanese beer and a big cup of coffee. We learned then that Taipei City has a free Wi-Fi network “Taipei – free” where you can login after getting a user name and password.

Come discover Kaohsiung, Taiwan’s busiest harbor. Located in southwestern Taiwan, this city boasts scenic seaside spots, magnificent mountain views, and a captivating culture. Begin your journey on the island of Cijin, and visit Tianhou Temple, where Matzu, the protector of fishermen and sailors, is honored. Next, head further inland and hike the trails at Monkey Mountain; have a spot of tea with a view of the city as monkeys swing overhead from the treetops. Other popular attractions include Love River, which offers scenic pathways that run through the city, and Lotus Lake, where the Dragon and Tiger Pagodas are said to give visitors good luck. At the lake, honor the Goddess of Mercy and God of War, and marvel at the massive statue of the Mysterious Warrior, Xuan Wu. After visiting Lotu...

BLOG - http://www.chopsticktravel.com/2017/03/19/what-to-do-in-taiwan-seafood-in-kaohsiung/ When visiting Taiwan for the first time most people will stay in Taipei. However only a short ride on the High Speed Rail is Kaohsiung, Taiwan's second largest city. Situated on the southern end of the island Kaohsiung offers tourists lots of sights, including an endless array of seafood. Visiting Cijin Island is a must do when in Kaohsiung. We went for a weekend getaway to eat some of the best food I've ever had in Taiwan. The crab was beyond amazing. Make sure to check it out in our blog post for more info on how to visit. I spent 3 days in Kaosiung for business. Southern Taiwan is in this time of year, hot, humid and has lots of rain. Ion fact, Taipei had severe floods which thankfully, we experienced none. I stayed at the Grand Hi-Lai, my room was a king size bed suite with harbor view and was around $200 per night. The 39th floor had some great views, while the gym and hot spring/sauna was located on the 11th floor. Some things to do: 1. walk along love river, aptly called because many marriage proposals happen here. 2. visit the night market 3. drop by the pier 2 art centre, it's full of tasty food and eclectic art. 4. eat some stinky tofu 5. visit a karaoke lounge with friends Kaohsiung has many more activities than I filmed, so plan on spending at least 2-3 full days here to catch all the sigh...
Which country is home to one of the safest and most punctual high-speed train systems in the world? If you guessed Taiwan, you’d be right! The nation’s high-speed rail, which spans the length of the island, was established in 2007 and has reduced the journey time between Taipei and Kaohsiung from five hours to just 96 minutes. The state-of-the-art transportation system, which carries over 46 million passengers per year, also has well-developed feeder services, enabling visitors to quickly transit to numerous popular tourist destinations across the country.
Kaohsiung is a city worth checking out in South Taiwan. To get there from Taipei, just take the rapid rails and in a few hours, you'll be there. In Kaohsiung, I met up with local friends Maggie and Wennie who showed me around Kaohsiung's harbor area and Cijin Island. But first, before the ferry, we stopped by a shaved ice place that serves shaved ice by gigantic bowls. It was delicious and super sweet- perfect for a hot day in Taiwan. Next, we boarded a quick ferry to Cijin Island, where seafood restaurants line both sides. This was full of tourists, but rightfully so because the street food was also delicious. We ate some roasted fresh squid- the best I've ever had. Then we stopped and checked out some weird ginger sauce tomato dip dish that can only be found regionally. Overall, it was ...
