For a change this week, I thought I’d do something a little different. Way back in the heyday of kids’ magazines, on some occasions they would actually give you a VHS tape or a DVD with a bunch of cartoons on them. It was pretty much the epitome of free gifts, and beat getting an old plastic lollipop or a cardboard Batman mask any day. Cartoon Network Magazine, however, saw a marketing opportunity with their giveaway DVDs and actually put idents and adverts on them, as though you were watching the channel itself. So that technically counts as continuity, right? Right? No? Well, I don’t care – I’m posting it anyway. These clips come from the first of the two giveaway DVDs I own, “Toon Foolery: Laugh Your ‘Ed Off!”, which contains a bunch of classic cartoons. We start off with the Cartoon Network movie ident, a pretty clever one which was only ever used for The Powerpuff Girls Movie and then quietly forgotten about, although it somehow ended up on this DVD. My favourite cartoon, Ed, Edd n Eddy, is the first show, but after that, we get one of the “Casillas” idents. There were used from 2002 to 2005 – I believe this DVD is from 2003 – and they were really clever, using a clip from one show that had an effect on a clip in another show. Actions have consequences, and consequences have actions. It’s genius, and a lot better than the idents they use today. A promo for the latest series of The Powerpuff Girls is on after that, the first series after the movie where they abandoned the hand-drawn animation and started doing things digitally. Still beats the reboot hands down, though. I.R. Baboon drops a basketball on Sylvester after that, and then it’s time for Grim & Evil, the compilation show that no one remembers, combining Billy and Mandy and that show about a brain in a jar that nobody cares about. Grim attempts to behead Billy and Mandy after that, and Buttercup socks Cow in the face. Next, there’s a promo for What’s New, Scooby-Doo?, where Shaggy explains the formula that pretty much everyone knows in their sleep by now. But it has that catchy theme song, so who cares, eh? One of the more elaborate idents then leads us into Codename: Kids Next Door, the show that made all adults look like evil supervillains. For all you know, they might be.
