17 BIGGEST Trees in the World
This Atlas Cedar in the Foret de Cedar in Northern Morocco is one of the tallest Trees in Africa. The tree has an estimated girth of 3.5 feet and is estimated to be more than 131 feet tall! This tree was planted around 1200-1400 A.D. which makes it at around 7 centuries old.
The Queets River Spruce in Washington state was the largest Spruce Tree in the world. The Queets Spruce has a circumference of 60 feet and is 191 feet tall. It attracted nature enthusiasts and tourists from around the country, but unfortunately fell when a harsh winter storm hit the area in 2007.
This tree is the largest known western redcedar in the entire world. It has a volume of over 18,000 cubic feet and a height of 180 feet when it was last measured. This tree makes its home about 21 miles from the pacific ocean near Quinalt Lake and took the title for tallest tree in the area after the Queets Lake Spruce was felled in a storm.
These odd trees that decorate the plains of Africa are known for their many strange characteristics. The tops of their branches make them look like their roots sprout into the air instead of into the ground, they’re known to be fire resistant and it can last through even the most severe droughts. The Baobabs aren’t just incredibly fascinating alien-like plantlife, they’re also incredibly large, regularly reaching towering 100 foot heights and massive 30 foot diameters.
Near a tiny village hidden in the mountains of central Colombia, the Cocora Valley acts as the residence for the world’s tallest palm trees which also have been recognized as Colombia’s national tree. The Palms in this valley grow more than 200 feet tall, which is strange even to many experts as there is no evolutionary benefit for a tree in an open field to grow so high.
The Tane Mahuta is a giant kauri tree (Agathis australis) in the Waipoua Forest of New Zealand. Tane Mahuta is 58 feet high but has a total volume of 18,250 cubic feet, making it the 4th largest trees when measured by volume in the world. Experts estimate this tree to be between 1,250 and 2,500 years old, so not only is it one of the largest trees, it is also one of the oldest. Tane Mahuta translates to “Lord of the Forest” when translated from Maori, which is more than an appropriate name considering the Tane Mahuta’s size and age.

Also thanks to the Palais de la Decouverte - they helped me with the whole vacuum pump setup in Paris. No, I could not actually suck water up 10m - I did about 4m, but the vacuum pump was easily able to do it and I saw spontaneous boiling on all of our various trials. Footage from this may end up on 2Veritasium.
Trees create immense negative pressures of 10's of atmospheres by evaporating water from nanoscale pores, sucking water up 100m in a state where it should be boiling but can't because the perfect xylem tubes contain no air bubbles, just so that most of it can evaporate in the process of absorbing a couple molecules of carbon dioxide. Now I didn't mention the cohesion of water (that it sticks to itself well) but this is implicit in the description of negative pressure, strong surface tension etc.

5 Trees You Wont Believe Exist!

1. Chapel Oak
Those guys who lived in the 1600s were not without a sense of creativity. Behold the 800-year-old Le Chene Chapel or the Chapel Oak if you like. Located in Allouivlle-Bellefosse, France, this tree was carved out in the 1600s to house two chapels with its enormous trunk. This was after lighting struck and burned the core of the tree. The tree survived and remained standing, allowing the local priests to build their own chapel. The tree is beginning to act its age and requires supporting struts to hold it up. This has not stopped it from being used for mass twice in a year. In case you were wondering, there is a stair case which winds around the trunk to reach the upper part of the chapels. Cool huh?
2. Wawona ‘Drive-Through’ Tree
This tree was huge and was the most famous among all trees in the Mariposa Grove in Yosemite National park, California. It stood at an incredible height of 227 feet and guess what, you could drive through it! It was initially 90 feet in circumference and when it sustained a fire scare, a hole big enough to drive through had to be cut at its base, hence its name ‘drive-through’. Unfortunately, it fell in 1969 under an estimated two-ton load of snow. It was 2300 years old.
3. Rainbow Eucalyptus
The Rainbow Eucalyptus’s bark is so brightly colored such that you may mistake yourself in an Alice in Wonderland cartoon. Native to the Philippines, the tree sheds the outer layer of its bark often to expose new green bark underneath. As the bark ages, it goes through several color changes from green to blue, to purple, to orange and finally brown before shedding. The bark sheds in irregular patches and three displays a collection of all these colors at once giving a kaleidoscope effect. They can be grown in any place that does not experience frost, but in the Philippines, they are mainly cultivated for use in paper manufacture.
4. The Boab Prison Tree
Found outside the town of Derby in Western Australia, the boab prison tree is named so because its stout trunk of 14 cm has been cut to form a small cell used as a prison. Creative, right? Police walking their prisoners to town would use the tree as a temporary holding cell overnight before carrying on to their final destination. The tree is 1500 years old and visitors are often asked to see it behind a fence to prevent it from getting damaged. I can tell you that not many of them resist the temptation of moving closer to behold the tree. There’s another tree of comparable size in Wyndham which is equally good but less visited due to its isolation.
5. Sculpted Trees
The first time I saw this one I thought it was an electrocuted human being. Turns out there is a name for how it is formed: arbor sculpture. It is the use of living trees to create a desired shape or structure. Alex Erlandson is considered the greatest of all arbor sculptors and his circus trees are still popular attractions. The trick is to direct the growth of the tree while it is still alive. It is even possible to create unique furniture by harvesting the wood once it takes on the desired form. And yes; your credit card must be loaded to buy such furniture.

In botany, a tree is a perennial plant with an elongated stem, or trunk, supporting branches and leaves in most species. In some usages, the definition of a tree may be narrower, including only woody plants with secondary growth, plants that are usable as lumber or plants above a specified height. Trees are not a taxonomic group but include a variety of plant species that have independently evolved a woody trunk and branches as a way to tower above other plants to compete for sunlight. In looser senses, the taller palms, the tree ferns, bananas and bamboos are also trees. Trees tend to be long-lived, some reaching several thousand years old. The tallest known tree, a coast redwood named Hyperion, stands 115.6 m (379 ft) high. Trees have been in existence for 370 million years. It is estimated that there are just over 3 trillion mature trees in the world.
A tree typically has many secondary branches supported clear of the ground by the trunk. This trunk typically contains woody tissue for strength, and vascular tissue to carry materials from one part of the tree to another. For most trees it is surrounded by a layer of bark which serves as a protective barrier. Below the ground, the roots branch and spread out widely; they serve to anchor the tree and extract moisture and nutrients from the soil. Above ground, the branches divide into smaller branches and shoots. The shoots typically bear leaves, which capture light energy and convert it into sugars by photosynthesis, providing the food for the tree's growth and development. Flowers and fruit may also be present, but some trees, such as conifers, instead have pollen cones and seed cones; others, such as tree ferns, produce spores instead.

Tāne Mahuta
Tāne Mahuta is a giant kauri tree (Agathis australis) in the Waipoua Forest of Northland Region, New Zealand. Its age is unknown but is estimated to be between 1,250 and 2,500 years. It is the largest kauri known to stand today. Its Māori name means "Lord of the Forest" (see Tāne), from the name of a god in the Māori pantheon.
The tree is a remnant of the ancient subtropical rainforest that once grew on the North Auckland Peninsula. Other giant kauri are found nearby, notably Te Matua Ngahere. Tāne Mahuta is the most famous tree in New Zealand, along with Te Matua Ngahere. It is thought it was discovered (by Westerners, as it was already known to Maori) and identified in the 1920s when contractors surveyed the present State Highway 12 route through the forest. In 1928 Nicholas Yakas and other bushmen, who were building the road, also identified the tree.
According to the Maori creation myth, Tāne is the son of Ranginui the sky father and Papatuanuku the earth mother. Tāne separates his parents from their marital embrace until his father the sky is high above mother earth. Tāne then sets about clothing his mother with vegetation. The birds and the trees of the forest are regarded as Tāne’s children.

Even being seen innocently frolicking with the milkmaid Honorine 'Schellebelle' earns him not just another public scolding -everbody is used to those all the time-, father, who has an absurd paranoia ma secretly plots with Louis to 'push him aside', decides it's time to marry the 'boy' off, telling ma to find him a 'suitable' bride without even telling their son, and scrapes together their life savings to buy a retiring neighbor's estate for the still non-existing couple. While pa is off to the auction, Louis takes it on himself to order finishing the urgent harvesting, but when the old tyrant sees this unauthorized initiative, already celebrating in the customary way, his abominably unforgiving arrogance drives him to commit an utterly unforgivable crime...

The Queets River Spruce in Washington state was the largest Spruce Tree in the world. The Queets Spruce has a circumference of 60 feet and is 191 feet tall. It attracted nature enthusiasts and tourists from around the country, but unfortunately fell when a harsh winter storm hit the area in 2007.
This tree is the largest known western redcedar in the entire world. It has a volume of over 18,000 cubic feet and a height of 180 feet when it was last measured. This tree makes its home about 21 miles from the pacific ocean near Quinalt Lake and took the title for tallest tree in the area after the Queets Lake Spruce was felled in a storm.
These odd trees that decorate the plains of Africa are known for their many strange characteristics. The tops of their branches make them look like their roots sprout into the air instead of into the ground, they’re known to be fire resistant and it can last through even the most severe droughts. The Baobabs aren’t just incredibly fascinating alien-like plantlife, they’re also incredibly large, regularly reaching towering 100 foot heights and massive 30 foot diameters.
Near a tiny village hidden in the mountains of central Colombia, the Cocora Valley acts as the residence for the world’s tallest palm trees which also have been recognized as Colombia’s national tree. The Palms in this valley grow more than 200 feet tall, which is strange even to many experts as there is no evolutionary benefit for a tree in an open field to grow so high.
The Tane Mahuta is a giant kauri tree (Agathis australis) in the Waipoua Forest of New Zealand. Tane Mahuta is 58 feet high but has a total volume of 18,250 cubic feet, making it the 4th largest trees when measured by volume in the world. Experts estimate this tree to be between 1,250 and 2,500 years old, so not only is it one of the largest trees, it is also one of the oldest. Tane Mahuta translates to “Lord of the Forest” when translated from Maori, which is more than an appropriate name considering the Tane Mahuta’s size and age.

Also thanks to the Palais de la Decouverte - they helped me with the whole vacuum pump setup in Paris. No, I could not actually suck water up 10m - I did about 4m, but the vacuum pump was easily able to do it and I saw spontaneous boiling on all of our various trials. Footage from this may end up on 2Veritasium.
Trees create immense negative pressures of 10's of atmospheres by evaporating water from nanoscale pores, sucking water up 100m in a state where it should be boiling but can't because the perfect xylem tubes contain no air bubbles, just so that most of it can evaporate in the process of absorbing a couple molecules of carbon dioxide. Now I didn't mention the cohesion of water (that it sticks to itself well) but this is implicit in the description of negative pressure, strong surface tension etc.

Description:
1. Chapel Oak
Those guys who lived in the 1600s were not without a sense of creativity. Behold the 800-year-old Le Chene Chapel or the Chapel Oak if you like. Located in Allouivlle-Bellefosse, France, this tree was carved out in the 1600s to house two chapels with its enormous trunk. This was after lighting struck and burned the core of the tree. The tree survived and remained standing, allowing the local priests to build their own chapel. The tree is beginning to act its age and requires supporting struts to hold it up. This has not stopped it from being used for mass twice in a year. In case you were wondering, there is a stair case which winds around the trunk to reach the upper part of the chapels. Cool huh?
2. Wawona ‘Drive-Through’ Tree
This tree was huge and was the most famous among all trees in the Mariposa Grove in Yosemite National park, California. It stood at an incredible height of 227 feet and guess what, you could drive through it! It was initially 90 feet in circumference and when it sustained a fire scare, a hole big enough to drive through had to be cut at its base, hence its name ‘drive-through’. Unfortunately, it fell in 1969 under an estimated two-ton load of snow. It was 2300 years old.
3. Rainbow Eucalyptus
The Rainbow Eucalyptus’s bark is so brightly colored such that you may mistake yourself in an Alice in Wonderland cartoon. Native to the Philippines, the tree sheds the outer layer of its bark often to expose new green bark underneath. As the bark ages, it goes through several color changes from green to blue, to purple, to orange and finally brown before shedding. The bark sheds in irregular patches and three displays a collection of all these colors at once giving a kaleidoscope effect. They can be grown in any place that does not experience frost, but in the Philippines, they are mainly cultivated for use in paper manufacture.
4. The Boab Prison Tree
Found outside the town of Derby in Western Australia, the boab prison tree is named so because its stout trunk of 14 cm has been cut to form a small cell used as a prison. Creative, right? Police walking their prisoners to town would use the tree as a temporary holding cell overnight before carrying on to their final destination. The tree is 1500 years old and visitors are often asked to see it behind a fence to prevent it from getting damaged. I can tell you that not many of them resist the temptation of moving closer to behold the tree. There’s another tree of comparable size in Wyndham which is equally good but less visited due to its isolation.
5. Sculpted Trees
The first time I saw this one I thought it was an electrocuted human being. Turns out there is a name for how it is formed: arbor sculpture. It is the use of living trees to create a desired shape or structure. Alex Erlandson is considered the greatest of all arbor sculptors and his circus trees are still popular attractions. The trick is to direct the growth of the tree while it is still alive. It is even possible to create unique furniture by harvesting the wood once it takes on the desired form. And yes; your credit card must be loaded to buy such furniture.
