On a day when Skip Away ran out of the money and lost his chance to become the world's richest race horse, Awesome Again won the world's richest race when he rushed through the pack in a blanket finish and snatched the $5.2 million Breeders' Cup Classic by three-quarters of a length over Silver Charm. Awesome Again not only won the laurels and the loot, but also his sixth straight start in a perfect year at the races. To do it, he needed to make a furious dash through the homestretch and knife his way through the 10-horse field to hit the finish line in front. But he did it, prevailing over one of the most impressive casts in racing history before a record Breeders' Cup crowd of 80,452 at Churchill Downs. And he redeemed an agonizing choice made a year ago by his trainer, Patrick Byrne, ...
Saturday's Grade 1, $2 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile wasn't decided until the wire, with the speedy Hansen outlasting favored Union Rags by a head. But the race was won around the Juvenile's two turns. Front-running Hansen was able to carve out a trouble-free trip in the 1 1/16-mile race, establishing a clear lead on the inside -- in stark contrast to Union Rags, who after breaking from post 10, was shuffled back to sixth early and hung four to five wide throughout. Although Union Rags was able to threaten in the lane, testing Hansen to the limit, his closing punch was not enough to overcome his significant ground loss. The data-tracking service Trakus measured Union Rags as having raced 78 feet more than the winner. "I tried to cover up, but I never had the opportunity," said his jock...

There is no joy in Louisville. Mighty Zenyatta got beat in her last at bat. The storybook finish did not include a photo. Zenyatta, seeking her 20th victory without a defeat, came up just short of catching Blame in a dramatic running of the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic on Saturday at Churchill Downs, falling short by a head after closing furiously from far back. Zenyatta, a badly trailing last in the field of 12 during the early going -- officially 15 lengths behind after a half-mile -- came with a powerful late surge after knifing through traffic a quarter-mile out, but Blame ($12.40) stubbornly held her off, ending her unbeaten career, breaking the hearts of the thousands of fans who packed this track to support her, and likely deciding the Horse of the Year title by the length...
Sunday Silence grittily held off a desperate late charge by Easy Goer to win the $3 million Breeders' Cup Classic by a neck today at Gulfstream Park. The tight finish of this fourth meeting between the decade's greatest racing rivals brought a crowd of more than 50,000 to a roar and settled the sport's major titles. Sunday Silence, who had beaten Easy Goer in the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness before Easy Goer trounced him in the Belmont Stakes, is assured of being voted thoroughbred racing's Horse of the Year. Emotions ran high long after the official sign was posted. For Sunday Silence's backers and handlers, this was a long-awaited day of vindication. After the Belmont, their colt had been widely dismissed as only second-best despite holding a 2-1 edge in the rivalry. For Easy Goer...
