Huge Hugh Jackman critics
HUGH Jackman's Oscar-hosting efforts have won praise and scorn in equal measure, with one critic comparing him with a "cheesy cruiseship entertainer".
Cruiseship entertainment. Mission unaccomplished. Just plain weird. That's the verdict from US critics on Hugh Jackman's performance as host of yesterday's Oscars.
Despite a healthy improvement in ratings for the telecast in the US - they were up 6 per cent on last year - the media has savaged "Our Hugh".
The New York Post said Jackman "performed like a cheesy cruise-ship entertainer to the endless hours of awards to dull men we've never heard of for categories we don't care about".

The Los Angeles Times didn't like fhis "chorus boy spaz-out" and said it was "weird" when he sat on the lap of Frost/Nixon star Frank Langella.
New York's Daily News said while Jackman did his best "his mission just wasn't accomplishable". They also didn't like Jackman's "human excrement" joke in the opening song, which was "gross", "not entertaining".
The Washington Post said Jackman was a "versatile and energetic talent" but called his opening medley of songs "pointless and flat."
Herald Sun film critic Leigh Paatsch wasn't a big fan, saying "Jackman's genial, folksy style sometimes only added to the overwhelming blandness of the evening".
"I'm not sure we'll see Jackman again in the driver's seat at the Oscars."
But it wasn't all bad. The New York Times said Jackman was a "shrewd, even thrifty choice for a recession-era Oscar night - the hosting equivalent of a value meal."
The Toronto Star said Jackman turned the Oscars into the Broadway awards show the Tonys - which he has hosted in the past - and said it was "vastly more entertaining than it has been in years".
Viewers seemed to like him. New York paper Newsday asked its readers to rate the Australian host's performance and 65.5 per cent deemed it "excellent'', 21.5 per cent "good'', 8.1 per cent "satisfactory'' and just 5 per cent gave him a "fail''.
Entertainment Weekly asked its readers if Jackman should return as host, with just over 70 per cent saying he should and only 29 per cent saying he should not.
Jackman was brought in to give the 81st Academy Awards a new look after years of declining TV audiences.
The traditional, joke-filled opening monologue was cut and Jackman performed two song-and-dance routines - one with actress Anne Hathaway and a second alongside singer Beyonce, Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens.

Some of these chicks are clearly sight impaired!
And some dressed in a dark closet.
But, all in all, far less sickening than the never-ending Oscar ceremony helmed by cheesy cruiseship "entertainer", Hugh Jackman! .... Somebody please shoot that mad and dangerous entertainment chimp!
Bob Dylan Oscar Acceptance Speech for "Things Have Changed"
This is a song which doesn't pussyfoot around nor turn a blind eye to human nature
A wonderful moment for Bob. A wonderful moment for real music. A victory for true art amongst the morass.
Dylan rightly picks up the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2000 for the sublime "Things Have Changed", a work we've written about before HERE.
The song appeared in the Curtis Hanson film Wonder Boys and was released as a single on May 1, 2000.
Dylan here gives a very modest, brief, intelligent and gracious speech. Just as it should be done. All those gurning actor nominees should take note!
It's quite uncharacteristic actually of Bob to give such a "normal" speech. Tony Garnier seems to think so anyway. See him cracking up behind Dylan! He's never seen "Normal Bob" before!

This is how an Oscar winning song should sound!
Superbly crafted in classic Dylan mould, "Things Have Changed" saw Bob create a powerful, timeless song with lyrics imbued with great poetry and no little wit.
A beautiful existentialist blues-inspired odyssey!
Bob later described it as "a song which doesn't pussyfoot around nor turn a blind eye to human nature"! Well, can't put it better than that!

Bob's classic track was the first decent Oscar song winner since 1993's "Streets of Philadelphia" by Bruce Springsteen.
To see clearly the insanity of this Oscar category, take a gander how, sandwiched between Bob and Bruce, came a slew of garbage like "Can You Feel the Love Tonight", "Colors of the Wind","You Must Love Me", "My Heart Will Go On", "When You Believe", "You'll Be in My Heart" from the likes of muzak monsters the ilk of Phil Collins, Tim Rice, Elton John et al! Oh the horror .... the HORROR!!
Around this period, having returned from some time in a creative wasteland with a few decent LPs, Dylan was really finding his Muse again. His next two albums would be the excellent "Love and Theft" and the sublime "Modern Times", the latter a true magnum opus, up there with Dylan's finest (and therefore with modern music's finest).
The director of Wonder Boys, Curtis Hanson, also created the video below for "Things Have Changed," filming new footage of Dylan on the film's various locations and editing it with footage used in Wonder Boys as if Dylan were actually in the film.

Marlon Brando's Oscar win for " The Godfather"
Bette Davis presenting the Best Actor Oscar to Marlon Brando for his performance in "On the Waterfront" at the 27th Annual Academy Awards in 1955.
Back when the Oscars weren't just one big vomitfest and when great actors and movies were properly recognised.
A lovely snippet of probably the greatest actor of em all collecting his gong for his sublime portrayal of Terry Malloy in Elia Kazan's timeless "On the Waterfront", from a great script by Budd Schulberg.
A very modest and very brief speech. No flood of crocodile tears! Every modern day nominee should be made to watch this before the Oscar Ceremony!
We love Bette Davis' outfit! Kind of a cross between a smurf, a nun, a munchkin and a mental patient!
